Gidday Stickyfinger and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. You have found a site where the members have a wealth of knowledge and expertise and freely share both. I would like to suggest a search of the build logs for your particular ship. If no log exists I believe it is worthwhile to see other modellers work as you gain an understanding of the processes involved. Also remember to ask questions as and when you become unsure of how to proceed. I second the recommendation, Post#4, to "Dry fit and measure twice". I wish you all the best in your build. Mark.

Gidday Adamjoyce and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. Congratulations on the imminent arrival. One suggestion to consider, search through the various build logs to see which type, era or class of ship appeals to you. You will see how the various pitfalls have been overcome and may get a better understanding of what is entailed. It can be quite daunting and expensive choosing a kit. There is a lot of advice on first time kits on the site. You will find a wealth of knowledge and expertise here and I encourage you to ask questions. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday Jo. You should not apologise to us your fellow shipmates. We have all been there and made mistakes and will invariably make more. If we can learn from our mistakes than it is not a complete waste of time and energy. Believe me when I say, I know how easy it is to become despondent. Maintain your positive attitude and hopefully things will work out. All the best. Mark.

Gidday Jo. Excess glue is a pain. I've learnt the hard way about "Squeeze Out". Scraping the wood may be quicker and more practical as sanding in small confined spaces is difficult. You can try both methods and adopt the one you are most comfortable with. Again, I admire your positive attitude. Keep up the good work. Mark.

Gidday Horst and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. You will find the members on this site possess great expertise and knowledge on our shared pastime. If you get the opportunity, search through some build logs on your build or planned future builds. Ask questions when you become frustrated or unsure of a step in your build. I wish you all the best in your build. Mark.

Gidday O.C. We all have days that seem to be nothing but one thing after another going wrong. The trick is to find a way to overcome the doubt that creeps into every decision we make. I am confident you will overcome your temporary malaise and do yourself proud when she is complete. Wishing you and your family all the best. Mark.

Gidday everyone. My 2 cents worth, which is worth considerably less. To paint or not to paint is surely the choice of the modeller. There can be no right or wrong answer. Another thought, we do not know 100% the colours used in days gone by. Feel free to agree or disagree as there is no right or wrong opinion. All the best. Mark.

Gidday David and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. Do you have a model in mind or a preference for period or class of ship? It is always worthwhile looking at the myriad build logs on this site for inspiration. You will find a wealth of knowledge and a lot of encouragement here. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday Joe and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. You have certainly found the most supportive and knowledgeable site on the web. Your experience in modelling should stand you in good stead for your future projects. Wishing you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday Jo. It is a pity that you find yourself in this situation on your first build. However together we, me and the other members, shall overcome the problem. I agree with the above posts suggesting filing the keel and maybe packing the frame slot in the keel to straighten everything up. I hope I haven't confused the issue. Wishing you all the best in your build. Mark.

Gidday Point and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. I can empathise with your unfinished projects. My garage is a monument to my partially completed projects. In my case life, time and lack of funds get in the way. I wish you all the best in your research for a suitable modelling project. Wishing you all the best. Mark.

Gidday Jo. Have you resolved the issue with frame 16? If not I would be interested, if possible, to see the plans. Sometimes the instructions leave a lot to be desired and can create confusion and uncertainty. Fortunately you have found the right site for advice and support. Wishing you all the best. Mark.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
