  1. Beautiful work as always Rob. It is always amazing what you accomplish in such a small scale. Looking forward to the next installments. Steve
  2. Mark, It is great to see Peter building the Victory. He also did a great job on the Constitution and Arizona. It is always nice to see kids take an interest in building models nowadays. My son and I did the same Revell Constitution for a 2nd grade project and I let him do the majority of the work. It was amazing how many kids in his class thought it was SO cool and wanted to know all about how he made it. Anyway, tell Peter to keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more posts on his kit. Steve
  3. Beautiful work as always Rob. I am always amazed what you accomplish at such a small scale! I think I need to break out one of my Santa Maria kits after I finish the Nina.....one of these days. Steve
  4. Daniel, Thanks for link. Your essay was very well written, well done. Anything new on your build? Steve
  5. Steve, Very nice work on the bowsprit and jib boom. I agree with Scott, it will make a world of difference when all the rigging goes on. I am planning on starting my own Revell Cutty Sark soon so I am watching your log with great interest. Steve
  6. G, I know it has been a while since you finished the Bismark, but I wanted to ask your opinion on the Veteran Model C38's? I have the Revell Tirpitz and have slowly been purchasing the aftermarket parts I want and have considered the Veteran pieces but wanted an opinion from someone who actually used them. Thanks in advance, Steve
  7. I have "Do the Twist" playing in my head while checking out your latest amazing work Daniel! Steve
  8. Looks like you've made a good start. I'll be following along if you don't mind! Steve
  9. Really beautiful work Frank. I like how you rigged the parrels for the mizzen although it is tough getting lead weights in the U.S., unless you go to a sporting goods store that has fishing equipment. Thanks for posting and I agree, Syren's line is amazing! Steve
  10. Nice work so far Greg. It is nice to see some more Plastic ships here. I am going to be following with interest. Steve
  11. Beautiful build and really nice work with the PE. I know what you mean about having to purchase extra PE, I had to do the same with my Trumpeter 1-350 HMS Dreadnought kit. Thanks for posting! Steve
  12. Steve, I have the Black Swan also, although it is boxed under Revell as "Pirate Ship"..... Really great description guys. Anyway, the differences you noted are correct as well as the figure head is different, which is too bad due to the Black Pearl's figure head is much cooler, at least I think so. The price difference, no idea.... Steve
  13. KP, Your Reale is really coming along nicely. About the missing sprues, I have never had to deal with Heller's Customer Service, but I have heard that they are helping customers out with these issues fairly well, although there might be a lag time. I will need to pull my Reale out now and check if it is missing any sprues. Thanks for the heads up. Steve
  14. Dan,Thanks for clearing that up, I have wondered at times why it seemed he was working on two models at once. The OOB was very nice but the pimped out one was REALLY nice. I know at the time, he was using an oil wash on his models but now has come around to the way I use oils, straight out of the tube and wipe after a time. Although I do tend to use a number of oil colors for my aging process instead of one. I really like his, Chris (Drake), and your modeling. Thanks again, Steve
  15. KP, There is a great build log on this German forum of the Reale by Schmidt. It goes through pretty much the whole build and he is a really fine modeler. If you use Google translate it makes a bit of sense, although the translator has difficulties with some words. I hope it helps. http://www.wettringer-modellbauforum.de/forum/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=34914 Steve
  16. Kp, She is looking good so far. I know how tough it is to paint the tiny details on the Reale or any plastic ship. Have you tried Tamiya's tape? It lays down really nice and when burnished keeps paint from creeping under it. Just lay your first coat lightly along the edge to seal it. I also lay it over what I am going to paint and then use a sharp hobby knife to cut along the edge so as to get a clean edge. I used Tamiya tape to get the painted line on the U-Boat I did a couple of years ago. Steve I also have the Aurora/Heller English instructions in .pdf form if you need them. It makes building the Reale a whole lot easier.
  17. Dawie, That is some impressive work so far. I hope you don't mind if I follow along. That is also one beautiful piece of wood for the base. Looking forward to seeing more! Steve
  18. Steven, If you have not gotten too far on the foot ropes, you might want to try using brass jackstays from ModelExpo for the vertical drops. I have used their .75 x 6 to good effect for my foot ropes. You can drill holes in the bottom of the yard and cut the shank to length. The eye is small enough for scale and it is a whole lot easier to run the foot ropes line through them and they hang perfectly. As I said, just an idea. Steve
  19. Arnie, Thanks for the info. I'll pick up the BJ plans and anxiously anticipate your next installment! Like waiting for the next installment of Commando Cody! I have checked Abe Books, and have purchased from them before and got great deals, so I'll have to keep a lookout for Bowcock"s book. Right now I have my hands full with the Nina, Catalan and Dreadnought builds so the Alabama will have to wait a bit. Steve
  20. I too will be following with interest Arnie. I also have this kit in the stash with the Cottage Industry guns set. I haven't found a Bowcock book that is affordable yet but I have kept looking. Looks good so far but if you do not mind, what plan are you using in the picture you posted? Is that Bowcock's or Blue Jacket's? Steve
  21. Galo, Personally, I would recommend the Revell 1/50 scale Viking Ship as a great first ship model. It is a fairly good representation of the Gokstad ship and a fairly easy build. It runs about $30 USD and you can get it online on evilBay or hobby dealers if there is not a local hobby shop nearby. The rigging is simple, the detailing is really nice considering the age and you can bring these out with washes. This was my first build after a 40 year hiatus. Steve
  22. Alander, I am glad to hear you ordered new parts, hopefully they will get to you soon. I am also glad to hear that the Nina and Pinta build inspired you to work on the Santa Maria, it is a cool model that I have built a few times. While you are waiting for the parts, you might want to think about building the Revell 1/50 Viking Ship. It was the first one I did after taking a 40 year hiatus. As Professor Tilley states, it a fairly accurate scale model of the Gokstad ship. It also is a fairly quick and fun build that you can practice washes on if you are so inclined. I have a completed build thread at FSM if you wanted to take a look at some photos. Also, I have completed WIPs of the Hanse Kogge and Thomas there as well. Regarding the Santa Maria, I have a tendency to build several models at any given time. That way I can work on another model if I am stuck or burned out. It gets crazy at times but it works for me. After I finish the Nina, I'll get back to the Pinta and Santa Maria. I would love to see some photos of your progress and if you ever have any questions, just ask. Steve
