    More good news (for me)....

Very pleased to see that all of her artillery is finished in black..... which allows me to create cannons to scale by turning a master, creating all of the cannons from molds.  This was one of my big concerns relating to going with 1:60th scale.

With all my focus up to this point being on just getting plan sheets scaled and printed etc. etc..... completely missed the gun deck option and how you guys have done yours.
Now, after spending more time on your logs, I think I understand what I must do to cut some of the patterns to accommodate the creation of a gun deck between bulkheads "E" through "L".

Remarked the eight patterns like the pic below.

Looks like I'm in for a real sawdust day.

I finally got back into the Man Cave and it felt a bit like Santa's Workshop. First 4 pictures show my bench pin complete with my fabricated helping hands. I have to wonder how I ever did work without a bench pin. I can't say enough about the value of having a pin. I made mine totally removable. Just loosen some wing nuts and everything comes apart in about 60 seconds. First shot shows the pin and helping hands under construction. Note the nice chunk of steel plate for soldering jobs.

Next two shots show the versatility of the hands and how I can locate a part to solder, glue or paint with precision. I built a few different sizes of L brackets to have on hand for various scenario`s. I give Mr. Mott credit here as he inspired me with his version.

Next shot is overall look of my bench modified. It turned out better than I expected. Notice the leather apron to protect my felt lined shelf, a must have when soldering or working with hot parts. I give God all the glory here!

Next two shots are gifts from my Uncle Bob. He built me a container for files and another for pliers, hemostats, saws, scissors etc.

Next shot is a gift from my youngest Son. This item will enhance my modelling at the miniature scales I model and the world I live in. Lens come in 10X, 15X, 20X and 25X.

Next 4 pictures shows my modification to my miniature lathe. I built a tail stock with sliding mechanism. I can also drill into anything chucked in the Jacob`s chuck. Just push the green button to drill. First picture is me dialing her in.

Next two photographs show the set-up. The pencil grinder on the left has a rotating head for turning. When I want to lock it up just insert a pin into the area that locks the chuck and I am in drill mode otherwise she free wheels for turning.

Next picture show`s a 1:300 scale Dahlgren cannon turned and painted from 3/16`` doweling purchased from the dollar store. 3/32`` drill bit shows the scale in comparison.

So where I am at with the Preussen build.... next two shots show the hull onto my custom holder I modified from an old document holder. I can swivel, turn, tilt, lower or raise the hull to the exact working position I want. So from here on forward all my posts will be about the build. Now I can focus on completing this SIB. First shot shows where I left off at last time.

Next shot shows how the stand fits nicely on my sliding tray.

So there you have it I am back in business!

Today I show bending aids for the production of chainplates.
A complete chainplate I have made in advance to see
    how it works.
Since the deadeyes have different diameters, the chainplates are also made with different
wire thicknesses, namely 0.7 mm, 0.6 mm and 0.4 mm brass wire.

    Cutting out bulkheads....

I'm not sure if this posting makes much of a real contribution to my experienced friends, however.... I'm hoping a few modelers taking their first shot at scratch building might find it helpful.

Creating the bulkheads from plan sheet patterns can be a rather lengthy process, requiring several stages of development..... printing the patterns, rough cutting plywood blanks for applying patterns, gluing patterns onto the plywood blanks, then cutting out the patterns, cleaning up the cutout part and fitting to the model.

The bulkhead patterns seen here demonstrate an example of an issue faced by the scratch builder.
In order to remove the material from the two spaces within the bulkhead with a band saw, it is necessary to cut through the top of the pattern.  After removing the entire area, I have simply inserted a replacement center post and added a space filler where I made the cut.

These three bulkheads are used to show the three stages.  The yellow one is a plywood blank with a pattern glued and allowed to cure for at least an hour.

Of course, I should note that using a scroll saw does eliminate the need to cut into the pattern.

I'm moving on now to defining the separation of the two belts of planks on each side.  After much measuring, checking, re-checking, and redoing certain areas, I got the drafting tape where I wanted it and drew my lines.  Now it's on to carefully using tick strips to transfer the plank widths on to the frames.

Mark out first, then prick the spots with a sharp point. That way the drill point won't 'wander' off the marks.

Thanks as always for the encouraging responses and likes. I really am thrilled with the wheel. Wasn't sure I could make one myself.

Continuing to make anything that will eventually go on the deck. Getting ready to start rigging the carronades soon. Here's a few pics of 2 ladders.

I painted the wales.  This went well, but proved to be more difficult to clean up the bleeding under the tape than I had expected.  It still looks a little rough for my liking in spots, but after days of tweaking, I'm calling it done . . . for now.  I'll probably revisit it later.  Anyway, it feels good to get some color applied.  The painted wales and counter really add some interest to the natural wood!  Up next planking, planking, and more planking.

Merry Christmas everyone!  And happy Hanukah.  Enjoy whatever holiday you're celebrating!

    Hi Mark,

CONGRATULATIONS on reaching a great milestone! It's much easier now to see what a beautiful model she'll be.

I hope you and your family have the Merriest possible Christmas.

My hope is that you and your family have the best of everything in the New Year (especially sharks with laser beams .

No update as such, but Merry Christmas to all.

Thanks Mike, BE, Carl, Stergios, Pat, Jesse, Doug, Sjors and all the like for continued support and kind words.  I've moved on to solving some rudder issues and will post more in due course.  Have had to take a little step backward in that I need to redo the copper finish .  Funnily enough, after I had brought the ship upstairs for a photo shoot I left it there and after a couple of days the result was a couple of small areas that had become rather mottled.  I can only guess that this was because our main level is more humid (normally work in a basement) and I hadn't cleaned off all of the reactant - purely guesswork, as the ship had been sitting in my work area for a week before that.  You live and learn, must do a much more thorough job ensuring any reactant is removed....

Mike - see message from Sjors, don't think that will be necessary but definitely an option, continuing to noodle this one..

Sjors, will send you a PM.

Here I demonstrate the difference between the grinded and the
    not grinded holes of deadeyes.
    It is clearly recognizable.

In this way, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Thanks, Cristiano. One of the images in the book led me to this ship from Fra Mauro's Mappamundi of about 1459. It shows a venetian merchantman similar to the Trombetta navi. Note the single mast. I wonder if my nave only had one mast

If my assessment of him would be right: He would have changed the ways of naval warfare even further ... All new fascinating possibilities ... He would have fitted a sloup of war with a plane to drop the canon balls
