    Ah yes..... more, bigger, better!
The issues of being land locked and with shallow lakes around my neck of the woods. I have built and sailed 2 full sized sailboats and recently gave away the last one Maria.
I have watched with great admiration the likes of Luke Powell build beautiful cutters. Perhaps in another life.

I was just thinking about why I do the work that I do this morning as I woke up, and I must say that there is really only one answer and that is because it makes me happy to be mucking about with ideas about how to do this or that with a bit of wood or brass or watercolour paint. Having the time to think about these things is a luxury that I know is not accessible to many, and that bothers me.

One of the joys of this forum for me is being able to watch and follow along many of the builds both simple and complex that are presented here. I read a comment about life from an author of a new book this morning "Use Less Share More" It sums up for me many of the things that I follow on this forum. Yesterday when I showed the beautiful curved lines in a bit of crab apple pruning gives me as much pleasure as spending an Hour being awe struck by the beauty and complexity of Doris's Royal Katherine made of paper and card. or GB's little fishing vessel . I learn from each. It is such a wonderful journey this learning thing.
So if you had told me in 1976 that I would be using bits of this 2 foot log of maple in a model of a sailboat that I had would be working on for 8 or more years, I would have said, hmmmm...interesting, where is your crystal ball?

Off now to fiddle with a few bits of maple.

Thanks again for the kind remarks, I settled on the oval handle I found a classic one that was for sale on Ebay so used that one as a guide  I liked the 2 inch square plate and the oval head screws. I set up the 1/2 inch collet in the square collet holder and made 4 cuts

The parted them off on the lathe

Next I turned up a ball and filed the sides to create the oval shape it took a bit of fettling to get the correct shape. It occurred to me that it would be best to make the square key part integral to the handle so after shaping the handle I reduced the diameter so that it could be filed square.

Slowly I filed down to the 1.2 mm to fit into the square hole in the lock, I used a bit of the same square tube as the gauge while filing to dimension.

then slid. the handle into the lock, just need to drill the screw holes in the plate and figure out the second handle for the back side of the door.

The next tool? Here is what I discovered today:
GRS makes interesting tools. Here is a very interesting one. A 3D vise. Usually a vise is only adjustable in 1 direction but this one is adjustable in all directions. This would be the ideal vise for carving a figure head.

My sails are spinnaker cloth Pete. I'll probably make another set of sails sometime soon out of cotton (maybe a couple to compare different materials) but the current set move her along just fine.

You asked me how I bent the sail line tubes - I annealed the tube the same as you did and bent them round a pulley wheel that I had lying around.  Flaring the ends was a different matter though and I might have to see if I can borrow a flaring tool for the next ones.  I'm reluctant to buy one as it won't get a lot of use.

Emma is now painted and a main mast has been fashioned. The radio gear is also installed.
The rc gear is all held in by two screws securing the entire rc block.
The deck will be screwed on so it can be completely removable.
The cast lead bulb on the keel weighs 7 lbs.
The cabin roof and both hatches are removable.
The flared and bent brass tube is to house the jib stays to the winch.
It was a feat of engineering.
I had to buy a flaring tool set, a tube bender and a gas torch to anneal the KS brass tube which is hard brass.
I had to make several attempts at it.
The first was with some copper tube from ebay which arrived at the incorrect size so Slipped through the flaring tool.
I tried ks alluminium tube with the bender but that just flattened at the bends.
I tried the ks brass tube cold but that also flattened at the bends.
I then annealed the brass tube and voila!!!
That poxy bit of tube you see caused hours of frustration, many days waiting for stuff to arrive and cost me $150 to make!.
I have done it now but there is a lot to be said for kits.
Although at the current time there is no kit for Emma.
The mast looks to be massively thick and cants aft quite a bit.
I have made all as per plans so it should be okay.
It is 16mm thick and tapers to 10mm at the top.
Only the fore and sides of the mast are tapered.
The aft is left as is to coincide with the sail Luff.
    Pete

    Hi Pete
That would have been one big Bluenose!

I have an Emma sitting in my hallway  :-)

She sails well although I only sail her in the sea having no access to a local lake; I'm building another two or 3 this winter for friends and we'll do a bit of racing.

Thank you for the masterclass in ship modelling. Like others, I can't believe it has been 6 years but it has never been onerous; indeed it has been a pleasure watching it all come together. Your expertise in all aspects of ship modelling has been a joy to follow.

I've got full size plans for a boat, kayak and stand up paddle board here at up to 18 feet x 5 feet Gaetan. If I can get that size printed in Turkey then I'm sure you could get them in Canada.

    Great start Grant!

My first and only RC model boat, built for my grandson is an Aeronaut 'Diva' (it was cheaper!  ). I covered the bottom of the hull with thin aircraft fibreglass and lined every seam inside with epoxy thickened with microballoons  - not the 5 minute epoxy - with a good fillet around where the prop shaft exits the hull. despite quite a few hours in our swimming pool it has stayed completely dry inside.

Fibreglassing isn't difficult but when you get to it, allow the fibreglass to sit on the hull at room temperature for a day or so and don't use a brush to spread the epoxy, use a thin, preferably rubber spatula. A brush will possibly open up the weave.

But carry on, I'll be watching.

I've downloaded and installed Virtualbox as you suggested cog and loaded Windows XP and AutoCad. It works fine. I'm having a bit of trouble printing at the moment but I'm working on that.

I also have a 15 day trial with TurboCad. I'm not sure I like it. I draw one line on the screen and suddenly there are another 5 lines showing.

I'm getting a bit more used to it though. It's similar to AutoCad in a number of ways; if Virtualbox isn't what I want then TurboCad is a reasonable option.

So I won the Ebay auction and have the proportional dividers heading my way.  I paid a lot more than I should have but I realized the cost of buying new ones was very expensive.  They are made by Dietzgen so I know they are quality.  Hopefully I can put them to good use.

The sponson have been glued on, plus the transom fashion piece that completes the timberwork of the sponsons around the stern. The hatches also located, there's some more deck timberwork - some spray rails, toe rails etc,

    Looking like a boat now.

    thanks, Mark

I have AutoCad LT 2002 which I have used a lot and would like to continue using but it simply doesn't like Windows 7 64 bit which my current computer is running. I've tried running it using the Windows 7 function that imitates earlier versions (Windows XP for example where the program worked fine) but (sigh) I have the Windows 7 Home Premium version and the function is not fully supported.

    Frustrated? You bet.
