  1. One thing not mentioned is "what's your budget?". We all have ideas on good beginner kits but knowing what you're willing or able to spend will help get the choices down.
  2. Ala Cart and Stone, Woods, Cook. Two very classic car models. Mine disappeared a long time ago.....
  3. No worries on the thinking out loud. Input from others is a valuable part of MSW.
  4. BTW, ModelExpo does have a 3-model beginners package. Starts off with a small boat and then the next two add masts and more details. Last time I checked it was around $100 or so. But they do have regular sales.
  5. A ship model but also true work of art and fantasy. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  6. There are discussions in the tool area on this. However, the caveat is to buy only what you need when you need it and go to for good quality. There are many builders who have jumped in and spent a pile of money on tools that they never use or are worthless for model building. And by a "small frame" are you talking about a cross section? There are kits of cross-section which would be a good start and also there's a group scratch build in the Triton area.
  7. Nick, for the wood, go here: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/20-wood-discussionwhere-to-use-it-where-to-get-it-what-types-are-best-how-to-finish-it/ Top three posts since you didn't say where you are located. Also, check out the sponsors on the main page sidebar.
  8. I saw that and am really confused by it. I've never seen anything like that. I did see one way back in the Usenet days were someone had set up the areas (pantries) around the mizzen mast on a 3-decker and made them into.... dumbwaiters to move food for the officers. Somedays, things just get weird I guess.
  9. I see Patrick beat me to this.... Just build one from scratch. a couple of shafts, some gears, and some framing. Doesn't have to be motor powered as a hand crank will work.
  10. Good question. If you're not scratch building then why consider either of those? For kits, I use small electric tools and mostly a scroll saw occasionally. The small tools such as these: https://www.micromark.com/mini-powertool/micro-make-tools Don't go wild, just buy what you need as you need it.
  11. I wonder if he's talking about the gratings on the decks?
  12. I'm sorry to hear this. Bad teeth are not fun. Like Harry suggested, check out if there's any over the counter type of antibiotics. I've heard you folks in the UK have that option unlike us in the States who need a prescription from a doctor.
  13. I've heard of many doing this or similar....think Viking Funeral for one way. Not sure why. Maybe it's just frustration.
  14. Welcome to MSW, Dave. We have had quite a few metal working projects as well as 3D printed works here for steam engines, miniature tools, ships, etc. Feel free to start a log when you're ready.
  15. Attitude and also knows how to give us earbugs... nothing like humming along.
  16. So far, other than "demonstration" buildings, the only thing I've seen done with this method is for temporary structures.. It is a new developing tech and time and investment will determine if it's go or no-go.
  17. Welcome to MSW, Michael. Do consider a build log in the scratch area. Sounds like a great project.
  18. No worries. Senior moments are common among many of us, including myself.
  19. Fire at Mantua? Mamoli had one back about 8 years ago or so and then Dusek bought the assets including the name.
  20. No rush, Bill. Don't push your luck by generating wood dust.
