Just note about tar. Back then it was a "golden color" if I remember right that turned black with age and exposure to the elements. Black is the petroleum version where the tar back then was product of trees.

On some, it is claimed that they were hinged at the top and just had the lower end roped up to keep it out of the way.

Plastic or Wood models? Your Favorite?
mtaylor replied to Bill97's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
One critical question... are you looking at kits or scratch? Kits, usually just X-acto type blades, sand paper, sanding blocks. I would suggest first doing a kit or two. Even if it's just something like the ModelExpo/Model Shipways 3-ship "beginner kit". Scratch gets you into a whole different world as far as tools. Many of the furniture tools are too large for model ships. The only full-size power tool other than maybe an electric screwdriver I've found useful is a scroll saw. My table saw, mill, and lathe are "small" tools. -
Be cautious as hardware stores sell "full-sized" tools normally. For models they usually need to be smaller except for doing wood processing such as tree trunks. The best advice has been offered IMO.... buy what you need, when you need it.

Pardon my ignorance but what's a "water groove"? I've not seen nor heard of that nor find a reference. -
Welcome to MSW, Lillypawz. Is there a first name we can address you by? I don't know about the UK, but many hobby shops will order the kit for you, or you can order from Model Expo/Model Shipways directly.

Welcome to MSW. Glen.

I think it looks great, Steven. As for even smaller bits you're adding... I'm reminded of this old saying: "don't sweat the small stuff as it's all small stuff".

Finally, after too much time spent on "life things" and some experimentation, I'm making progress. Ship's wheel, binnacle are finished and dummy masts in place (not clued) but still need some paint. I painted the wheel to look like wood mostly. I didn't like the color scheme in the instructions. I then wasted a lot of time trying figure out how to glaze the binnacle. Tried numerous ways but even though the glazing looked good to my eye, it prevented the panels sitting flush with each other and "shelving". My next step is to back up and get the catheads installed. I had to wait on some new blades as I wanted something a bit sharper and longer lasting than the X-acto blades I was using. So... on-wards....

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
