Greetings to MSW/NRG Members and All Ships at Sea
Nirvana replied to Michael Scarborough's topic in New member Introductions
Michael, I am impressed. Strauss, Mozart or Handel doesn't matter or any other of composer of that classical era. Back in 2009 a small (very small) group of the choral I sang with, went to New York to sing Mozart Reqium at Charnegie Hall under direction of John Rutter. However, I do think we have a lot of hidden talents within our group. -
uploading pictures
Nirvana replied to David56's topic in How to use the MSW forum - **NO MODELING CONTENT**
HEIC is a singular picture format for Apple. This format has to be converted in order to be uploaded to an universal unit. Any phone can save pictures as a jpg. This can be set within your phone. Change the saving setting to jpg and you will be okay. Good luck -
Bolin, that looks real good. And yes,it is real hard to get the planks 100% perfect without any gaps.

James, from third person in the Pacific North-West of USA (me) a Warm Welcome to MSW! Regarding Bluenose, go with the Model shipway kit, the instructions are better.... unless the IKEA style of instructions is preferred, which is multi-lingual.😄

Something that caught my attention was the poster on the wall. The Rolling Stones played in Lisbon 2014.

Buy high quality tools, more expensive but will save you from troubles in the future. Mark, are you saying buying tools are addicting? Just because during last year I bought the Byrnes disc-sander and table-saw? lol

Trying to understand white balance
Nirvana replied to Gaetan Bordeleau's topic in Photographing your work. How to do this.
Using a tripod with cable release is very important if you want to create a steady picture. Having the lights at the same setting and placing even more important. Something I learned to be very helpful. This along with press release or timer. Never touch the camera trigger to shoot your picture! It will be become blurry! -
Trying to understand white balance
Nirvana replied to Gaetan Bordeleau's topic in Photographing your work. How to do this.
So here is the rhetorical question: How important is that the white balance is perfect when taking pictures of their models for our members? More important: Is the viewer monitor set properly? How do you know? - Probably not! This is me: I use dual monitor with my computer - one is an Asus the other a HP, when set to same all settings - my screens are showing details and different colors. Both running same resolution/frame rate/ color and from one and the same video card and using same type of output! Take your picture being out-door with clouded sealing will create the best scenario without any hard shadow or highlight. Many pro-photographers of cars and other models has been doing it this way. Even better having a grey/white cloth hanging over the photographer along with the model to create an almost balanced light. There are so many aspects to consider in this matter. So, bottom line the white balance in the digital age can be thrown out - still today a proper white balance reference card set beside with the "model", is needed to will create the right setting. As for us here at MSW, take your pictures and upload the one you are most happy with - it's not a competition. If the white balance is slightly off, I don't care - it's the details of your model that is more interesting. -
Simple question without any critics: Are you building Smith Rotterdam to be a R/C ship? If yes, epoxy and cloth is the way to go. Building for display - forget epoxy! It's too much work. When I built my T37 R/C yacht I applied one thin single layer coat epoxy of West Marine product. The auto primer was applied twice along with 10 layers of paint before 2 coats of clear coats. The surface should be clear. If white - the ratio is off.

Michael, .... humph and cough.... 😄 darn, you are good! And your eye for crafting is amazing! A warm welcome to MSW from PNW. I am one waiting for something incredible to come out from you, feel no pressure......😃 Again, warm welcome and Happy Ending to this year and Happy New "ship modeling "Year! -
Only two component paint would withstand the 2000 grit paper. As previous members wrote, with acrylic paint from Vallejo/Tamiya and others sanding can remove a lot of paint. Besides do test runs before applying your desire to your model. We have all been there, with a lot of work afterwards. I know you will find your solution.

Hej Håkan, I didn't realize you had Atlantica going as a new project. The three ships SXK has are very interesting ships with amazing history. I like to thank you for the link regarding the usage of software to create plans to build a ship from. I hope more people will find this useful. Finally, I hope you are doing well with your recovery. As a side-step, we got our share of snow yesterday about 5 inches..... Gott Nytt År (I was about to write Happy Ending in Swedish as well, but that would be a bad combination) 😇 Sköt om dig!

Something to put in "your pipe" When creating the case and having stub mast, let the mast touch the upper part of the case. Have seen this type of displaying and it looks real good.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
