jablackwell got a reaction from Overworked724 in US Brig Syren by jablackwell - Model Shipways - first POB build
More progress this week between classes and grading papers. I have started to work on the stern. Yep - those little ribs are quite fragile, particularly where they have been inscribed with the laser cutter... so they tend to bend then break away from those marks. Cyanoacrylate to the rescue. I'm going to let this set overnight before continuing the stern framing.

Made more headway this afternoon given the lousy NH weather we are having today.... expecting some 12-18 inches (30 to 45cm) of snow.... So... what better that work on the model?!

    - Sanded down the sills and lintels, and everything held together. Nothing broke, so I am happy.
    - Trimmed the gun port template and taped that into place.
    - Marked all the little bits that make up the vertical walls of the gun ports.
    - Set the mini chop saw fence to cut the gun port walls and chopped slew of those then started to glue them in.
    - By the way: I am LOVING my new Dewalt finishing sander. It has saved me a ton of time, and is delicate enough to get it done safely.
    - Some images follow....

Hi Mike - not sure which knot I used at the time, but I used a knot then a dab of white glue to secure it.

For the cabane and outer wing struts, I used CA. For the landing gear struts, I used epoxy soaked into the string used to simulate the bungee cables.
CA was touched on the "bolts" for the wing struts. It holds well.

I remember recently seeing a remarkable stop motion video of the building of this kit.  Happily, I was able to find it again:

Stop motion build of AL Fokker Dr. I by Tom Grigat

Maybe it will even help with some of your assembly questions.

Fellow modelers, I should know the answer to this having done so many but, if a piece of metal is pre scribed for bending, do you bend into the groove or away from it ?
Anyway, a start has been made !! One seat and safety harness painted. The harness is brass and has to be bent to look like straps later.

And, just to confirm that my Sopwith does indeed fly from the ceiling .....

    Hi Mates,

Well she is done. Last pics for this log, a big thanks, especially to those of you who have followed along – for such a long time!! adding your kind and encouraging words, and all of your important advice. So many of your compliments have also helped me become a better builder – again thanks. Big thanks for so many of your Like clicks and visits as well.

Captain Steve: Up next, after much hand wringing –it was between the Billing Oseberg (1/25th)
As much as I became obsesses with Vikings after watching all seasons of The Vikings this kit is just too big (my fault for not paying attention to its size during the purchase) Yes there are smaller size kits – could be…..

So having learned so much with Vasa, I will go with the OcCre Santisima Trinidad cross section. I intend to bash the heck out of it, including leaving some of the lower and upper gun deck planking bare, as well as poss. at the weather deck as well – showing the, to be added,  under framings. And trying my first at coppering the hull.

Jörgen regarding the woods – those that came with the kit, along with wood from Corel’s Mirage. Then from Midwest products; some walnut, mahogany, Cherry, and beech. I did not use any finish on this build, nor do I intend to.

Again Mates THANKS SO MUCH for your kind words.

    Regards,

    Hi Mates,
Well the flags came out as I had hoped. Using starch, as opposed to watered down glue has some advantages (for me in any case)
    1) It dries flags into shape as soon as the starch dries within seconds (using a blow dryer-low heat low, speed – adjusting the distance)
Your fingers need to be part of the shaping as well when using the dryer – yup they can get a bit hot.

    2) If the “shape” is unacceptable, you can always re-soak the area and reshape ( I had to do this for the large stern flag to get the final shape I wanted)
That said – Who knows it the shapes will hold over time?

Next post should be shots of the completed build along with its case.

Oh PS: that stern flag is incorrect but I sure like the looks of it - haha

    Regards,

Added the cranes, and dry fitted the davits. I don't think I'l permanently install the davits until rigging is just about done.
In between working on the whaleboats, I think I'll get the main mast stepped. Ratlines and little whaleboats - Slow progress at this point.
