  1. Thanks for the detailed response. That's really good of you to have both options available. I love the book series and the movie but I'm pretty sure I would prefer the 1796 option.
  2. Chris, I don't know if this is answered somewhere else but I'm wondering if the upcoming HMS Surprise will be based on the actual 18th century ship or the movie ship? I will be getting it either way but I'm just curious. Thanks, Al
  3. Your attention to detail on your rigging is fantastic. I really appreciate you sharing all the detailed photos and explaining everything. It's really helping me understand how it's done. I'm doing my first rigging on a simple schooner and this really helps. Thank you.
  4. I've only gone through and looked at your photos but plan to go back and read all your posts. Your Speedy looks amazing and you have convinced me that I need to get this kit.
  5. Thank you for letting me know. I'll start saving up.
  6. Erik, I've been going through your build log for a third time. One reason is that I want to learn as much as I can but also because your photography is really beautiful. I'm an amateur photographer and really appreciate seeing you work. I was wondering one thing. In one of your photos you show Cheerful on your work area. Do you do your dusty work there? It's amazingly neat and clean.
  7. Wow, she looks absolutely beautiful. I can't imagine this as a second build.
  8. May I ask how much it was? I need to start saving for one.
  9. I know this is an old thread. These are some great ideas. I have a question though. My Serv-O-Matic binds a little bit so is not smooth. Is there any way to help it run smoother? Will it break in?
  10. I picked up some sheet stock a little while ago to try cutting it out. I think it's the best way to go.
  11. It's not much. I'm going to the local hobby shop to get some sheet brass and plastic and try both. I'll try bending the brass strip to.
  12. Not U shaped. It would be 2 separate pieces about the length of 2 stations. About 2" long.
  13. Yes, it will be painted. I didn't think of using plastic. That would sure be easier.
  14. Thanks for the help. The brass strip supplied in the kit is 3/32" x 1/64" and would be bent on the larger dimension. I think you guys are right about cutting it from a brass sheet. The radius would probably be around 10" give or take.
  15. Can anyone recommend a method of making a large radius edge bend of brass strip? I'm making a sheet metal guard to go on top of the railings at the bow, around the anchors on my Glad Tidings.
  16. "Pretty well"? I think it looks fantastic. Mine is a complete hack job in comparison.
  17. Rusty, I'm sorry for the loss of your little shop companion. They are truly family.
  18. I just wanted to post a couple of proof of life pictures. I planed the spars to a tappered hex then sanded them round. It was really easy and I'll do it that way from now on. It was my first time using a plane. I still need to learn how to sharpen the blade. The cabins are just placed on and not glued. My next challenge is the metal work. It's another thing I've never done before. I have soldered PE and other small parts but I've never really made parts. I'm looking forward to trying it.
  19. Chuck, Congratulations on the new home/shop. It looks like a fantastic work space that can be set up exactly how you need it to work efficiently.
  20. Your rope looks great. I'll be ordering some after the holidays when shipping eases up some. I don't want to add to the gift shipping if I don't have to.
  21. Thank you both. I'll definitely do that next time. I can sure see how useful a plane is now though. I'll eventually have to learn how to sharpen the blade too.
  22. I have a question for you guys. The kit provides dowels for the masts but they need to be tapered. The instructions suggest planning them to square then octagonal . I have a nice Stanley plane that I never used before so I decided to try it on a cut off first. It went really well. I was able to plane it down to a tapered octagonal then sand it round. When I tried it on the actual mast dowel the first 3 sides went perfectly. The forth side wanted to grab and tear out. Is this because the blade is dull? It was giving me nice curly shavings when it seemed to cut well. BTW, I will be using this method from now on. I think I need to make some kind of fixture to hold the parts though. Is that what is called a shooting board? Thanks, Albert
