Same here, I've never done copper. I've been reading up on it and it doesn't look too bad. Right now, I'll be happy to finish the planking and having it look decent. -
Looking really nice. I'm at exactly (right down to the number of planks) the same place on my Syren. I'm really enjoying the kit.

I've spent the last few evenings going through your build and am really enjoying it and learning a lot. Your doing a fantastic job. I'm just starting the planking on mine and will go back through yours as I progress. Thank you for taking the time to log everything.

For those wanting to improve the carronades in the Syren kit there is good news. Model Monkey has 3D printed versions for sale. They include the whole carriage and all other details. They look really nice and I have 2 sets of 8 on the way. I know this is an old thread but I'm really enjoying reading through it. I only wish I found it before I started but I'm not to far along. I'm just fairing the stern frames. Thanks for posting your build.

The beginning of my career working for the US Navy as a civilian I was a draftsman laying lead on vellum. We used to compete to see who could but more detail into the drawings until the chief engineer put a stop to it. He said he enjoyed looking at them but said it was too much detail. One day he dropped one of my drawings on my drafting table and said "you miss spelled a word" and walked away. It was 9 sheets of H-Size with 2 full sheets of notes and a sheet of List of Materials. He came back after lunch and signed off on it and showed me the word. Those were fun times. I did a bunch of drawings for the battleship reactivations.

Thanks for the detailed response. That's really good of you to have both options available. I love the book series and the movie but I'm pretty sure I would prefer the 1796 option.

Chris, I don't know if this is answered somewhere else but I'm wondering if the upcoming HMS Surprise will be based on the actual 18th century ship or the movie ship? I will be getting it either way but I'm just curious. Thanks, Al

Your attention to detail on your rigging is fantastic. I really appreciate you sharing all the detailed photos and explaining everything. It's really helping me understand how it's done. I'm doing my first rigging on a simple schooner and this really helps. Thank you.

Erik, I've been going through your build log for a third time. One reason is that I want to learn as much as I can but also because your photography is really beautiful. I'm an amateur photographer and really appreciate seeing you work. I was wondering one thing. In one of your photos you show Cheerful on your work area. Do you do your dusty work there? It's amazingly neat and clean. -

I know this is an old thread. These are some great ideas. I have a question though. My Serv-O-Matic binds a little bit so is not smooth. Is there any way to help it run smoother? Will it break in?

I picked up some sheet stock a little while ago to try cutting it out. I think it's the best way to go.

It's not much. I'm going to the local hobby shop to get some sheet brass and plastic and try both. I'll try bending the brass strip to.

Not U shaped. It would be 2 separate pieces about the length of 2 stations. About 2" long.

Yes, it will be painted. I didn't think of using plastic. That would sure be easier.

Thanks for the help. The brass strip supplied in the kit is 3/32" x 1/64" and would be bent on the larger dimension. I think you guys are right about cutting it from a brass sheet. The radius would probably be around 10" give or take.

Can anyone recommend a method of making a large radius edge bend of brass strip? I'm making a sheet metal guard to go on top of the railings at the bow, around the anchors on my Glad Tidings.
