HMS Warspite by Old Collingwood - FINISHED - Academy - 1/350 scale - PLASTIC

OC, nice and slow with these thin wood parts. They're nice looking so be very precise in your placement. You'll only get one good shot. Patience is key.

Thank you Ken,

I am hoping to improve things by doing controlled areas - say the bow to the breakwater as one section,    the breakwater to the obstructions either  side of turret no2,      from there to the break between the main superstructure block and the A/c Hanger block,     from there (allowing for my 4inch cut outs) to the runway cover,  then  from there to the V section around turret 3, and finally the aft section towards the stern.

I had read and also had a bit of feed back from Pontos that you can spray a light film of water before placing the decking, as it slows the tacking process a bit, not sure how accurate that is but it did come from the horses mouth so to speak.

More work today on the mid ship section I applied a few thin coats of Admiralty light grey to the inside of the armour bulwarks around the 4inch mounts, and while these were drying I changed colour and applied a few more dark grey coats to the paper floor sections I made to fit around the the 4 inch mounts.

When these are dry I will be able to glue down with some PVA the paper flooring, then the next stage will be study the wood decking sheets as I intend to do them in smaller sections and possibly apply some appropriate weathering to them?

This will be my first section of decking, the shaded area each side is for the dark grey painted areas.

Hi OC.
I see you are planning on the metal bit for Warspite, this was not so, it was wood through out the decking.

I I may show you some pictures of the Pontos decking for this ship.

DSCF1205_zpsztezmqnq.jpg

DSCF1090_zpsuskaonyk.jpg

DSCF1211_zps2gdgrdlh.jpg

You will see it goes right through, If you are doing the Queen Elisabeth then the iron decking would be fine, this is where the AA turrets would be.

Hope this helps.

There were four ships of this type, but they differed from each other.

Thanks for that Frank  great looking pictures my friend,  I am basing a lot of my work on the excellent Very  Large scale Warspite  that a fellow builder on here was building, a lot of his pics show some excellent detail and what I would consider reference material as the build is an engineering model built by the Ship builders.

What I will have to try to source is the Fairlead's as a few of mine have broken due to heavy handling when I was working on the hull :(

I got round today to laying the dark grey painted areas I had made from paper sheet, I test fitted them a few more times before painting on some white glue then fixing them down, they settled quite well,  next I turned my attention to the wood decking strip - as I have decided to tackle small areas at a time, I cut the relevant section and then I cut around the details till I had two nice small areas to work with,  as they were so small I placed them and pushed them strait down into place without wetting the surface.

I am quite impressed so far and the wood deck really looks the part.

Here is two pictures I shot after fitting the above.

Hi there,

After doing a bit of net bashing I came across this - its a well established company here in the UK, they are called Cornwall Model Boats, and the individual maker in that site is called  Amati Ship Fittings, they have several Fairleads in different sizes.

More progress to day folks - as I posted above I continued with the mid ship section on the other side of the runway strip, this was cut away quite easy with a nice sharp fine blade but the pointed ends that part wrap around the turret were very very fragile, to the extent that they broke off when I tried to fix the deck down B)i was able to fix them back down after the carpet munster gave them back ;).

Anyway in the end after a bit of adjustment and gentle knife work around a few of the fittings, it settled down and I am quite pleased with it so far.

More work was carried out yesterday by tidying up some of the decking-pushing it down with a flat blade and cutting around a few tiny obstructions, next I turned my attention to the float plane runway - this is being covered and not in use as I a making a late edition Warspite, as she was on D Day, I  cut the cover from the fret and bent the two edges 90 deg, then I did some shaping and thinning of the track guards that would be seen over hanging the deck, also under this section was fitted on each side under the track a small brass plate, representing the bottom of the track, I painted the track light grey than fitted the cover with a few small touches of super glue, the gave the cover a coat of light grey, then put aside to dry and harden.

Next will be the ramps that were fitted so crew could walk over the track, these again are brass and I will add some small frame work underneath to give them a bit more realism.

The next stage of decking I have been working on the plan drawing them up in Paint, I have decided to split the next stage in Port and Starboard with two nice sharp/strait edges to join at the 2nd gun turret at a Diagonal.

Here is a pic of my Paint drawing.

I carried on with the mid ship section again today working on the catapult runway fitting the two slopes at each end from the etch sheet parts, after shaping and fitting a couple of coats of light grey was applied, here are a couple of pictures showing where I am at.

I did a little bit more work in the same area today, by applying a little bit of white dry brushing to bring out the edges a bit, and applied dark grey to the slopes over the catapult cover, I then applied a couple of coats of matt varnish to kill off any shine where it should be flat.

Next step will be to fix the boat stand near to the catapult then I will start on my first bit of superstructure in the same area.

Just a quick update folks - I am now working on the rear mid section block that contained the rear guns direction finding and rear mast, I have so far managed to construct the three sides of the block and drilled out the port holes, also a little bit of shaping around the water tight doors was screaming out to have my blade gently scrape around their edges to give them a slight separation from the block.

Here is a section from my drawing to show the area I mean.

As always thanks for watching my build folks, it is a slow one but with any luck worth it in the end  ;):)

Some more progress pictures folks - they show the main section of the rear block constructed minus the roof that will be painted separate then fixed in place,  a few of the port holes will need to be cleaned up again after the last coat of paint/top coat,  the pictures show the first paint level of light grey, next will be the camouflage layer of dark grey to be applied after taping up.

Thank you so much mark,  it is slow work as I don't want to loose my mojo, and sometimes I just don't feel I can do the build justice or just can not be bothered, so on those days I just leave it alone in its box,  then when I get the urge I return to it and do little pieces till I feel I need to put it down.

Different days from when I used to build an Airfix plane kit in a few hours...

I think we all get that way at some point, OC.  I've spent days staring at my build.  Not sure if it's fear of messing up or the weather that makes me lethargic.  Then other days, it's go fast and everything comes together.

A slightly shorter update folks and minus any pics as we have a newcomer to the house in the shape of a 8 week old yorky puppy, this has been taking all of my time away from the boat yard, as myself and wife have been working our life around this new addition - meaning lots of following her around the house and not forgetting the sleepless nights :(

Anyway while i was able to get a bit of free time(whats that)  i worked on the same section as above painting the second camo layer of medium grey, this was masked off first but again - I am just not happy with the solid line tape creates with hand painting(even thin layers) with a brush, even after removing the tape as little as a couple of hours after painting :(   I think in future i will rely on a pencil line and my hand without a tape mask, this is less of a problem with smaller areas i guess, as i can hold the area usually with some kind of kitchen utensil - wooden spoon etc(just hiding it from the wife though) ;):P

OC,

Have some fun that pup.  Our Yorkie is now a bit older than 3 and she still acts like a pup.

Here are two pictures showing a little section of the work i have been doing between playing with our new puppy,  the oval shaped surround had to have a false floor fitted after removing the old one, also in the pictures is the flight control room(the one on the end of the small paintbrush)  that has had the windows blacked and a little detail on the roof, also the two tone camo is shown on the main structure, this will have more detail added along with some blacked out window details and some weathering(dark around shadow areas and light raised details).
