Hello All and specially Aldo, Christian, Jürgen,Mark, Ray and T.J. ...!!!

I am stuck with the stern. I have repeated the stern pieces like twice and the one or two three times. I haev asked Juergen for a little help, hope to see his answer soon but after all the trials I´ve made i´m not in a hurry...

Willing to move on I started to cut the beams for the Lower Deck. I am following the pdf I drew months ago. My intention is not to cover all with the carlings and the ledges, I´ll make only the scarfs and some of the curves on both sides... Do not know for sure right now.

Here are the pics...

post-87-0-31264000-1423473832_thumb.jpg

I glued the patterns as allways with rubber glue (scholar one)

The gab between the beams it´s small so I have had to sand less. You have to be very precise with the cuttin though.

All of them rough...

post-87-0-85009800-1423474106_thumb.jpg

Sanding the inner side. The outside was done with the disc band sander... (no pics of that) Easier than sanding the inner.

And the result of one, at last, weekend modelling...

Best wishes and happy winter!!

Hello helllo, Here are the pics...

post-87-0-46643800-1423652880_thumb.jpg

This part has been the "trickiest" (till now...) to built. I repeated them 3 times. I had no such thick piece of wood so I ended gluing to 5mm planks. Then I sanded it. I have left all the pieces 4mm thick because on the plan look pretty thin to me.

I finanally found the trick, specially due to Jürgen´s log (Thanks for that J!!).  2 leveled ribbands (2.5x5mm) to fit the posts.

post-87-0-27495500-1423653055_thumb.jpg

With the ribband and those clamps (not very fancy) It´s easy to set the post and see where you have to sand less or more.

Starboard.

post-87-0-33274700-1423653110_thumb.jpg

Port side. The curve is very nice.

post-87-0-87521600-1423653141_thumb.jpg

Now, another good one. I glued a 20x20mm pine block meaussuring the correct distance from the last frame till the outter edge of the post. 52mm. I ensured the level of the block. Somehow is like actually building a jig.

post-87-0-94615600-1423653170_thumb.jpg

After the port and the startboard posts were glued I moved the pine block 3mm out. All the post comform a curve, they are not straight aligned. You can also take this measure out of the plans. I also marked the block with the situation of all the different posts.

post-87-0-85681000-1423653210_thumb.jpg

Before to put the inner posts I started with the framing on both sides. Again the ribband was extremly useful...

Last pic, I marked the gabs down for the other posts. Now It´s all done. I ´ll post the pics later.

Hello All and happy Carnival!

Here are the pics of the stern completed. The whole set is so weak that first I tried to treenail* the posts to the fashion timber but I broke the only 1mm bit I have. I´ll have to buy another one or five or ten of them... Anyway, I have glued 4 strips at the position where the taffarel will be. By doing this I hope to "protect" this area from the accidents I have seen on other logs. The unplanked stern is extremly weak.

post-87-0-64582900-1423816395_thumb.jpg

As you can see I have moved the pine block 3 mm out. For the other two posts I moved it another 3mm...

p.s. Treenailing:

post-87-0-26425200-1423816659_thumb.jpg

DO YOU HAVE any TRICK or something for the treenailing??? I can not get a strip less than 1mm diameter!! The strip keeps braking and cracking when I try to pull it out. I have used twicers, my fingers, my nails... but nothing. The wood I´m using is walnut but I have tried bamboo sticks and maple. Please help me here. Any tutorial or video would be apreciated. I went till number #11 on the plate. On page #10, post #141 are the details about the plate. Do I have to wet the strips first, more patience, ??

If you are using a jeweller's drawplate, it won't work for wood. It's designed to squeeze wire to thinner diameters. Get yourself a Byrnes' drawplate from Model Machines. That is made specifically to shave wood.

Is that a jeweler's drawplate?  Hmm... I was thinking you might be drawing the wood through the drawplate the wrong way.   One side, the holes are countersunk and one side they're not. Pull through the non-countersunk side and out the countersunk side.

Thanks for the answers...

Druxey, Pretty simple answer yours... (with respect). The problem of purchasing Byrnes plate is the price. I emailed him a year ago and the plate was 25 bugs plus another 50 for the delivery. (75 $ total) And I can not see any difference between my plate and the Byrne´s one. At the end, I think, is a thick piece of metal bored in the same way as Byrnes. Any zoom or closeup pics of the holes on both sides would be apreciated to light up your point.

Mark, You are right! I was pulling out from the wrong side I guess. Now I think is working better but I´m going to assume that from a 50cm long strip I am going to end with several 10 or 5cm long. And be more patience I guess. I´ll spend the whole afternoon only shaping with the plate to see how small dia. I can get. My aim is to get 0.7mm treenails.

Thank you Guys!

Hello All!

A big and small update...

I am working with the interior of the hold to trying to move on '¡?... Trying to finish all the breast hooks and the masts steps.

I got a question, Does the mizzen mast rest on the keel or on the lower deck? on two huge carlings? # 3 - 4 counting from the stern to the stem. (see the pdf)

Anyway, I have started to cut all the frames and I have made a hand saw out of a square piece of wood (15x15mm) and then cast the whole thing with resin. It´s pretty useful, not fancy but it works.

I have attached lots of pics just to remind me where I have to cut more or less. Like a "diary". Also I have attached the pdf I made on its day to meassure all the dots from the wale to the top rail.

Hello all!

Still waiting for the answer about the question of the mizzen mast... Druxey, Mark, Jürgen... and all!

Anyway,

Here´s a pic of the Triton taked on June 18th 2014

And here´s a of how she have changed.

I´m pretty happy cause now I can see the "final" shape of the ship. Cutting the frames was kind of a nightmare... almost everything started to crack so I have had to quote every single piece with a pencil an then stick them to the frames with tape or to see where I have to re-glue...

Hope to work some more on Easter!

You happen to be in luck, Daniel: I actually had a copy of Triton's sheer draught in my collection to refer to. Her mizzen mast steps on the keel. Might I suggest you get a copy of this draught, which shows a wealth of detail, both inboard and out? The National Maritime Museum's reference is ZAZ3235.
