Count me in on this OC from here in, interesting to see how this comes together and how you approach the painting.  Nicely done so far.

Cheers,

Nice job OC she is already taking on some character. She is no longer a cigar tube with aspirations of becoming a Sardine can. :(:P

Thanks lou,   I thought the same  as subs do tend to be slightly detail shy,   she has a few bits and pieces to go on her yet.

I agree

Back in the day my favorite nuke sub was the Skipjack, and the only kit available was the old Aurora kit that left much to be desired as far as detail goes. That was no excuse I suppose, as I also have plans for the Skipjack that showed details that were not on the kit but could have been etched in. At any rate, my Skipjack ended up as a black teardrop with fins. The prop was really the only break in color!

You might also see if you can find pictures of the deck and see if like US subs these subs have the "Target" ring painted around the rescue hatches. Only a little bit of color but everything helps. Also it looks like the Radar mast is painted white in all the pictures where it is raised.

A little more progress  just picking out some deck details with my brush(its easier to do this while the hull is still in two halves)    as Lou said  its brings the details out on what would be just a cigar.

Thanks kevin,  wonder if that is red oxide paint they paint where the tiles are missing - cant imagine it being rust,   also what are this  two zig zag panels where there are no tiles  on Trafalgar.

No reason why not OC. The tiles are most likely glued directly to the bare metal and if they get knocked off like in this picture the exposed area would rust pretty fast. There are also some signs of rust showing along the seams of some other panels further back. Possibly that is the reason the panels fall off. Water seeps behind the panels and lifts them off. I suspect that there is considerable flex in the hull between deep dives and the surface and the tiles expand and contract at a different rate than the hull.

Some other areas of note is that the circle marker for the escape hatch is green rather than red or yellow, and that the bollard the guy in sitting on is yellow on top rather than black. I am assuming that this bollard retracts flush with the deck when not needed as a seat.  Another item of note is the cleats. It appears that they are fixed and do not retract or become flush with the deck in some manner.

I take that back about the hull expanding and contracting on deep dives.

The area in question is not part of the pressure hull, but a casing installed over the true hull to provide a walking/working area and is therefore not exposed to pressure changes with depth. The true pressure hull starts just below the freeing ports at the water line and appears to be black rather than the charcoal color of the upper hull.

I have this pic (again not one of mine)

It shows more detail including the pattern on the sides that is completely without any tiles  - but looks intended that way.

Nice work on the anti-skid OC. Rather ambitious replicating the tiles. Do you plan to also show her with a few missing tiles ?????

Change of plan for my next stage as I am not happy with the finish so far  - I decided I will join the bottom and close the hull,  and possibly construct the sail and fit it,  then I will be able to work on the join seam and sand as needed,   then I will mask to where the generic waterline would be be and give below it a few fresh coats of paint by hand as I dont have a sprayer.

The sail will give me something to hold onto while hand painting and the masking will help with even brush strokes, then I will polish with soapy water and a sponge as before to smooth out any brush marks (well thats the idea)

Some other T boats appear not to have the channels on both sides, just want to work out if I can paint them in the same dark greay color as the tiles.

I will soon. want to finish my riverboat first. am thinking maybe I might try a diorama of Kursk alongside. given there's not a great deal of detail on these guys I figure maybe I can add access ramps, tethering ropes etc to a dock. also I like the idea of trying to use fake water. but as I say, riverboat comes first.

cheers

dolphins are awarded on completion of part 3 training on your first Sub, i got mine back in 1980, on a conventional boat HMS Odin, all in all i had only 6 hull but did about 24 years in them of the 28 years in subs plus another 6 years in surface vessels, hence the building of my HMS Fife

That is some service beneath the waves,   I spent a day at Dolphin in 81  school work experience based at Collingwood for the week,   facinating experience taht led me into applying to be a WEM the year after (didn't make the grade though).

Right  I decided to attack the sub  (no pun intended)   by closing up the hull,   this was quite a  tidy job but needs  a bit of filling near the bow,   any way  I also put the two halves of the sail together, then glued this to the hull,   when set I lightly sanded the hull  to create a key, but also masked off the top section, then I started to apply the first few brush coats of dark navy grey.

It will need quite a few coats (all thin coats) to build up a smooth finish.

Here are a few pics.

Nice progress OC. Looks like a pritty solid colour to me ... so you'll be repainting your acoustic tiles again?

Hiya  mate,  I will continue to buile up the base color first and attack the bow area where there is a gap, then I will look at simulating some tiles with tape masks.
