Trafalgar Class Submarine by Old Collingwood - FINISHED - Airfix - 1/350 - PLASTIC

Recommended Posts

Evening all,   I decided to use a little artistic license  and have a go at lightening the bottom area that would have been in the sea more than above esp, when not submerged,   firstly I masked off an area on both sides then I hand painted with some admiralty medium sea grey, then when dry i rubbed the paint slightly to blend it in,  after I will dry brush slightly to blend the two colors better.

Next off will be a bit of weathering with some green to simulate algea.

Algae is an interesting idea OC

I kind of wonder if these ships are prone to stuff like that? First I am almost certain that they use a paint that has some anti fouling properties and secondly they never stop moving while at sea. You know, the "Rolling stone gathers no moss" Theory.

Still and interesting concept though.

Have a look at the photo of her in dry dock lou,  it shows the weathering including what looks like algea around her bow and along her waterline, and a fading affect lower down.

Thank you denis,   its always more difficult hand painting a smooth surface with no details to break the flow of paint up,  and no matter how good my brush tech  might be over the years, I just cant get the finish how I want it,  so - as I dont want to start it all over again and have to invest in a few rattle cans,  I have decided it will have to be a gap filler and be a bit rough round the edges.

Those areas were so uniform that I suppose I just mentally wrote them up as a green primer. I suppose you are right and they are just areas of the lower hull that have not been cleaned as thoroughly as the rest of the hull yet.

Hello all,   I have stalled with my sub as I have decided a change of plan,    I am going to re do the whole paint scheme,   I will have to wait till I can order some Tamiya Acrylic Nato Black in spray can form.

I think that will be the better option all round, as Naoto Black is a kind of bleached blue grey shade of black, also with it being aprayed it will give a Much much smoother finish.

Just need to wait till I can get the paint, then It will be back on (mind you I can put the few odds and sods on it first after I have given it a good rub down with soapy water)

The last time I painted a sub, I base coated it with Ceramcoat black and then dry brushed a thin coat of a dark charcoal gray, also Ceramcoat.

Thank you for that,   not the easiest of things to paint (by hand)

When I tried to put my 18th Century Longboat thru sea trials, the glue dissolved and almost all of the planks popped off the frames  !

Nice looking frigate, OC, glad she passed the first phase of her sea trials unscathed. ;)

I gave her a rub down with some fine wet and dry  and running water,  I just need to fit the rear horiz stabs and a few bits on the hull, then the PE  I received,   all in preperation for the rattle can I am expecting in the post.

Hi OC

Other than around the bow, isn't this the look you were trying to achieve? The streaked multi color more worn sides? Just wondering.

I decided to give her a  "out of refit" condition with some slight weathering but a general overall color condition.

The Nato Black  have ordered is a Grey-Black color so it should look a lot better, and a rattle can to give a nice smooth finish.

More progress today  -  I seperated some of the pe parts and managed to loose one of them (as you do)  these were the hatches,  so I managed to fix in place two hatches and two accessnt  hatches,  these needed a slight bend to fit them to the profile of the top/side of the hull,  I also fitted the top  device infrot of the sail (not sute what it does),   then two side hull covers were fitted - these have a slight opening at the rear.

After finishing off the hull details  I worked on the rear section containing the Stern Planes, water propeller  system and cover.

After fitting these components I gave the inside of the cover and prop blades a coat of brass paint.

So this is the stage I am at sofar - next will be to crate a handle(stick) to hold the sub while I giver her and overall spray as my Nato Black has arrived.

Thank you for all the views/likes and of course everyones imput.
