HM Cutter Sherbourne by Edwardkenway - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1:64 - First wooden build

Recommended Posts

Right got about 4 hours on Sherbourne this evening.

Fitted channels and chainplates. They went on better than I expected!🤗

Put the winch together as the kit instructions said and then promptly took it apart, it looked absolutely awful. Trying to keep the octagonal shape was beyond my skill set, so its been sanded to a round tapering shape, also drilled a few holes for the levers?? that turn it.

The cog/ratchet thingymabob was a bit of a pain to get looking  passable I'm so glad I bought some needle files! Anyway after all that only had enough time to rig the blocks on the bowsprit

I will get round to rigging her cannons  when I know I can take my time because I don't want to get like I did with the one I rigged  in an earlier post (🤬🤬🤮😱)

Cheers

Hi Edward,

Those channels and Chainplates certainly went on well and look good. As you know, l had problems with mine also, l am not sure mine line up with the shrouds as well as yours.

Keep up the good work Edward, my next build is going to be the Sherbourne so l will be learning from you and yours.

Best wishes as always,

The Lazy Saint.

Hi all,

The deadeye wouldn't turn so had to take them off 😭and then had to make new strops 😪however they've not been blackened so will have to very carefully paint them.😟

Have finally rigged the starboard side guns, only port side to do.

Gratings have been glued in place.

I've still got one chainplate and deadeyes to rectify, then get all deck furniture fixed in place, after which I can make a start on the standing rigging 😀

Cheers

Hi Edward,

Great rigging of your guns, well done, l will use your example when l build my Sherbourne. Your re built channels and Chainplates look even better now, l bet you said a few choice words when you realised the Deadeyes were upside down.

Keep up the good work.

Best wishes as always.

Hi LS, there were some but it is what it is. If everything went as planned life would be very boring, and  would not  challenge us!

Hi all

This update wasn't supposed to happen now but due to the weather here (rain and more rain) work is on hold and I find myself with time to head to the shipyard.

So I rectified the deadeyes port and starboard, and finished rigging the guns.

I decided that the deck pumps needed a bit of something to make them look less like two short pieces of dowel, so I planked them, maybe they are a bit too chunky but they're going to stay that way.

Fitted all rigging blocks to mast and spars ready for when I get onto the rigging.

Glued down most of the decks furniture and got the anchors rigged. Now I don't think that the anchor cables would have both been turned round the windlass but I like the look of them like that.20190804_200839.thumb.jpg.ed2144d66135cc57caaf0b82e5e0d282.jpgthis was my first time in my new shipyard as I've been evicted from the kitchen table.   Anyway it's stopped raining so it'll be back to work tomorrow.

Work on Sherbourne will stop now til the end of August for a holiday with my grandchildren and others of my family.

Cheers and thanks for all the likes, comments and advice. Til September 😎

Hi Edward,

Good job, l think the guns look great, that is the look l am aiming for. Your Pumps also are very pleasing and with the work on your masts done you are all ready for your return.

Have a great holiday with the Grandchildren, don't forget to pack a kite, assuming of course they aren't already teenagers.

Best wishes as always.

20190815_221757.thumb.jpg.9d3a3361354426f0f311c81c97a260cc.jpgWell I'm back from holiday and I've  started on the standing rigging.20190813_182053.thumb.jpg.60adc8791d5cf84887d603ee88a78ff8.jpgI've done the shrouds and stays and lanyards. I must admit I'm enjoying doing the rigging,  I did think I would struggle a bit with the knotting and tying but I'm find it very relaxing. Next time I shall do the bowsprit.

Cheers

I just happened upon this build, to tell the truth it was your name that caught my eye (I have played Assassins Creed Black Flag too.....).

You are doing an impressive job on your first build, I like your attention to detail. Everything learned here will certainly help you in all your builds to come (but somehow they don't seem to get any easier :))

Well done sir!

Thank you  very much.

Pleased to have you  aboard  sir !

As for the name it was a toss up between  that and Edward Teach, kenway won !

Thanks LS

I'm back to work Monday so I've got to get what time I can in the shipyard.

I've had a few hours on Sherbourne today, finished the standing rigging and got started on the running rigging.

I'll say it again but I am really enjoying this part of the build, maybe because it brings the ship to life.

Anyway fitted the gaff and driver booms and rigged them, moved on to the top yard and did have a bit of trouble getting it to sit right but got there in the end.😀

Next was the main yard and had same problem  but sorted it faster this time!

I'll  leave a bit for next time.

Cheers

Hi all,

This is the last of the rigging,  tying the ratlines on the shrouds.

I prepared myself  for complete frustration but was pleasantly surprised,  the clove hitch that is used according to the rigging plan is perfect for getting a good rhythm and a hour and half later one side was completed.  Started the opposite shrouds and then stopped for the night.

Hello everyone,

I'm doing the last bit of rigging (ratlines), make a few coils to put on the end of the running rigging and lash the anchors and I've finished my first ever wood build.

Thanks to all who stuck with it and thank you for all the help, advice and encouragement  without which I would have struggled.

I must say that I most enjoyed rigging albeit fiddly.

So last few photos

Oh almost forgot a special thank you to Tkay11 and Dubz as it was their build logs of Sherbourne that popped up on an internet search that brought me here in the first place.🍻😃
