Panzerkampfwagen V Panther Ausf.A - Tamiya-1:35 by Edwardkenway - FINISHED

Recommended Posts

what rolled off the assembly line is one thing.........it's what they did in the field that is another ;)  depending on the terrain,  among other factors,  determined what the final camo appeared.   if a division commander thought there should be added color,  it was handed down to the units to make the changes......some even had their own ideas.   this also pertained to markings as well.

I yam wot I yam!

finished builds:
Billings Nordkap 476 / Billings Cux 87 / Billings Mary Ann / Billings AmericA - reissue

Phylly C & Denny-Zen - the Lobsie twins - bashed & semi scratch dual build

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been  adding the small parts to the body and turret, but took no photos 🙄, while waiting for the glue to dry, I kind of started the half track I bought at the same time. When I get round to that model properly I will start a log🙂

Thanks for your likes and comments,  there will be more.

Cheers😁👍

P.S just a couple of teasers of the half track, floor is only dry fitted.

If you need info about the 251, just call 🧐

Thank you Patrick, I do have a question, would it be acceptable to have the 251 towing a 7.5 cm anti tank gun? If not what vehicle should I get?

Thanks in advance 🤗

Rained off again today, so airbrush started up and repainted camo on the hull, 20210120_122547.thumb.jpg.a3289f3b3099ad7b0ae5d3ca811a593e.jpg

it got a bit green on the gun mount, but I can live with that 20210120_122609.thumb.jpg.22a0d904163ae8c66d7ad98fed9f921c.jpg

I ended up mixing my own brown as fleabay has non in stock from any vendor and I refuse to pay £5+ at Amazon for a pot of paint I could get for just over £2:angry:

20210120_122323.thumb.jpg.973c64b80f5a08bb6608b644d5e9488b.jpg

when the paint has dried it's on with the last bits and tracks.

For the thumbs up and comments I thank you all😁👍

This is possible. but it is rare, then you build a Sd.Kfz 251/4. Normally this version was intended to pull a 7.5cm artillery gun.

But 7.5 Pak40 is certainly not wrong
Becourse the 251 was an expensive vehicle, these were very rare.

Which vehicle to tow a PAK40

Normally an Sd.Kfz11 (the unarmed version of the 251) or a Steyr Raufenschleffer Ost (There may be more vehicles i think)

As the war progressed: Almost anything heavy enough to tow a PAK 40
Examples: A Steyr 1500 , trucks all types: opel, Ford, Mercedes, etc.

Ps,

One of the final versions was the 251/22

You never guess .... a Pak 40 mounted on a 251

Patrick would probably know better than me bu generally no... Tanks didn't tow anything usually, not saying they didn't but it would be highly unusual...

You need a Hanomag.... Namely an SdKfz 11 Leichter Zugkraftwagen 3t......

This was the standard 3 ton light artillery tractor.... used throughout the war on all fronts.....

I have been looking at the kits of those available EG, so far the price is £40+. There are one or two Opel Blitz 3ton trucks that could suffice, but it looks like I'm  gonna save some pennies for the SDkfz11😉

Btw those photos are great, thanks

My pleasure Brother.... I'm an artillery nut, especially for the towed variety.... I have 20 or so various pieces,(mostly US) and finding the appropriate tractor is difficult sometimes..... In the US army is was the 76.2 mm M5 AT gun and M-3 Halftrack which I have in the stash.... It's an unappreciated field of modeling in my opinion.... 40 quid, ($60 US) is not out of line, pretty good in fact.... barring the occasional bargain steal off evilbay..... The Opel, (Ford Germany) Blitz's would be found hauling light ammo trailers, generally they weren't strongly built enough to haul anything above very light anti-aircraft artillery.....

But enough off topic chat, I wanna see more of what looks to be an outstanding PZ V.......

More is coming, basically the final chapter, all bar the crew, but I'm  a bit rusty on figure painting , I might contract them out to OC 😂.

I found a Sd.Kfz11 late version on fleabay £25 free p+p so if I can sweet talk the financial director it could be a goer🙄

Don't be sorry, the place I got it from has it captioned wrong, that's what I get for trusting the internet.... (but it was a very funny looking 75 to me, I thought it was a 2.8 cm schwere Panzerbüchse 41 (sPzB 41) or "Panzerbüchse 41")

Hey brother, If I'm wrong, hit it.... Would rather have it right than wrong.....

Thanks Denis, of course I'll put some more pictures up when I've finished😉

Looking at the decals, there are three numbers :421 :309 and :223. After trawling google, I've come up with a panzer division; Lehr Panzer, 5th army  centred around Caen during overlord and mentions of Bastogne in the Ardennes, but this is where I've drawn a blank as I can't  find any Panthers with these numbers present, if anyone can help out I'd be grateful, if not I shall purchase an alternative decal sheet.

The 251 and pak40 will be in the same Lehr regiment. I've added a link to info.

Cheers.

Brother, for historical accuracy's sake the Panzer Lehr was never attached to the 5th Army....  It was part of the strategic reserve that hitler refused to release on D-Day.... It operated as an independent unit..... Here's the historical account of it's activities around Caen....

Quote

When the Western Allies launched the amphibious invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, Panzer Lehr, as a part of the strategic armored reserve, was held back from the fighting during the crucial first days. It was soon released, reached the front, and was committed to battle against the British and Canadians on June 8. It was placed in the front line adjacent to the 12th SS Hitlerjugend Division, where it defended Caen and fought several British offensives to a standstill. The division was involved in the heavy fighting for "Hill 112" near Caen.

On June 13 an attack by the 22nd Armoured brigade group of the British 7th Armoured Division outflanked Panzer Lehr's defences around Tilly-sur-Seulles and cut through the German lines, taking the village of Villers-Bocage and threatening Panzer Lehr's rear. Elements of Panzer Lehr, the 2nd Panzer Division, and the 101st SS Heavy Panzer Battalion were committed to defeating the British penetration. The ensuing battle, notable in part for the actions of German tank ace SS-Obersturmführer Michael Wittmann of the 101st SS Heavy Panzer Battalion, saw the British withdraw to their start lines after two days of inconclusive fighting. By the 17 June, Panzer Lehr had been forced to withdraw.

Like all German armoured units engaged in Normandy, Panzer Lehr suffered heavy losses in its transport from Allied air attacks.[1] By the end of June the division's armoured component was severely depleted. Despite this, it continued to hold against the British and Commonwealth forces, engaging in heavy fighting near the town of Tilly-sur-Seulles.

Up to the end of June, the Division had suffered nearly 3,000 casualties and reported 51 tanks and assault guns lost along with 82 half-tracks and nearly 300 other vehicles.

The Quote above came from https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Panzer_Lehr_Division

You can find the complete history of the Panzer Lehr Division there.....

Covers all movements and actions it was involved in from it's creation to it's surrender in the Ruhr Pocket...

Also, in operational orders and on tactical position maps the Panzer Lehr was noted as the 130th Panzer, It's TO&E consisted of these units...

Panzer-Lehr-Regiment 130

Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 901

Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 902

Panzer-Artillerie-Regiment 130

Feldersatz-Bataillon 130

Panzeraufklärungs-Lehr-Abteilung 130

Heeres-Flak-Artillerie-Abteilung 311

Panzerjäger-Abteilung 130

Panzer-Lehr-Pionier-Bataillon 130

Panzernachrichten-Abteilung 130

Panzer-Versorgungstruppen 130

The large turret numbering was only present on about half the tanks they had and represented company level identifications... Battalions "Abteilung" usually took the same number as the division...

Backer might know more than I do given his extensive resources....

I use the Microscale products for my decals. The FLAT solution hides it for me.  Use the SET first, let it dry overnight, then apply the FLAT.  The other solution is Testor's Dullcote spray.

Nice job on the paint scheme and tracks.  Looks good.
