Built this model while living in San Diego. This is my first attempt at a scratch build.

This being a more modern ship I never had to build deadeyes inside the rails.

I used scratch on lettering on the hull.

I needed to simulate the iron hull texture. I experimented with several methods and found the mixing fine silica with white glue and applied to the hull seemed to work well. I the painted the hull after it dried.

I have been building kit models for many years so I have lots of loose wood and materials to use.

Hi Kathy,

Glad to see you took the plunge into the dark side of scratch building!   For a first attempt you chose a pretty complex project and did a lovely job of it.  For the future, you may want to consider the blocks, if building a model of ship from the late 19th century onwards, as there were internally stropped blocks as you show in the actual ship photos.  These can be tricky to make from scratch , but the ones you can get from Syren and assemble yourself are quite good and represent this type of block very well.    I look forward to your next project and hope you start a build log so we can follow along as you progress.

To match the paint colors on the masts and yards I was allowed to take a chip of paint from the mast and worked to match the colors. I think I came very close.
