Thanks, Redbeard;  pull up a chair!  My friend Nenad always keeps things interesting... :D

After coppering the rudder, I knew there would be a "patina mismatch" with the hull.  The rudder almost looks pink from a distance....  I'm going to say that the rudder was lost in heavy seas, and replaced with a new one...  (That's my story, and I'm sticking with it :10_1_10: )

Seriously;  It will probably take another 2 to 3 years to complete the ship, at which time the oxidized copper on the rudder and the hull should match.  (This copper tape was all from the same roll, BTW.)

Some riveting on gudgeons?

Very nice work. Think forward how to mount them. It is not easy !

CA might be messy option, and some tests how cooper and accetone live together may be usefull. Also in such a scale Alu gudgeons are too hard to stay in place you need them.

Do not worry about color difference. Some kind if monkey live whole their life with red back

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen.  Nenad;  I am in the process of determining the rivet/bolts for the gudgeons, but they will be present.

I would like them to serve a structural purpose, (i.e. actually holding the gudgeons on) so I don't have to use any CA.

Keith;  The topgallant rail is here to stay, for better or worse, and I'm ok with how it looks. :)

FB friend of mine, Roland Vlahovic, who is a world champion in modellship this year Bulgaria ( Naviga 2014), his tip for structural connection is - a small pegs of CA on the top of nail before nailing. Add to that my personal experience that still should be prepared (drilled) hole through the hinge and the copper and the wood slightly smaller diameter than that of a nail. I hope it helps

Thanks, Nenad.  I'm still thinking about the nails.  In the meantime I'm testing CA to hold the pintles to the gudgeons.  I think it will work out ok.

Picture shows my prototype hinge assembly, before drilling and trimming.  (Admiral asks: "What are you making, a fan?" :P )

Keith;  I was originally planning on epoxy for these, but since I didn't have any on hand, and these hinges do not actually support the rudder in my build, I tried CA and found it to be adequate.

Lawrence, thanks for the kind words.  I plan on using brass to fabricate all the yard and mast hardware, but that's a ways down the road, and my brass inventory is very limited.  Also, my soldering equipment is not up to structural soldering;  new toys must be purchased in the future...

A little bit more work..  I have trimmed, drilled, and filed the rudder side of the hinges..  The ship-side gudgeons have yet to be finished.  They are shown taped to the scrap piece of wood that I used for a drilling back.  It also keeps them together and somewhat protected.  I will simulate bolts with small lengths of 24 gauge wire. (0.51 mm).  The holes are drilled with a 0.55 mm bit, which broke, so I'll be stalled until I pick up some more bits. :(

Try the thinest paintbrush you can find and magnifier. Then go forward slow and precise as you can. Results will be above you expect. First test color - will it cover Alu.

Nice work my friend.

The Ship is looking great!  Your attention to detail is awesome.  I also liked the pig for the pen!

One day (soon) I hope to get back to my build.

Take care

Marc

Marc, thanks for checking in, and it's great to hear from you again!  Hope the new job is going well, and I hope to see some new posts in the near future...

BTW, the Pig is well trained, and will be paying a visit to you in Virginia to inspect your progress... :P

All the best,

Ok.  I started initial installment of hinges (semi-painted) to the rudder, using CA at the hinge points, but letting the ends free.  Once dried, I will drill into the rudder through the pre-drilled gudgeon holes and affix the loose ends with small nails (hopfully NO CA).  The sternpost gudgeons remain unfinished, as I decided to make the whole rudder/hinge assembly first, then fine tune how it meets with the ship.  These will be evened up and trimmed to approx. 7mm, and drilled with 3 or 4 holes, for accepting the nails.

Hi Bob,

Don't know if your hinges are already glued, but you might want to bend them back the other way toward the rudder and then intall.  I see that they are bowed out away from the rudder.  I don't know how thick your hinges are, but I had trouble with mine (which were also curved out) wanting to pull away and had gaps between the hinge and the rudder even when nailed.  I ended up removing them and bending them so that they bent toward the rudder and had to be wedged on.  They ended up staying in place with no issues. I added epoxy as I slid them into place.  I then nailed into place.

by the way spent the evening catching up on Nenad's and your builds.  Nice work!

Take care,

marc

Thanks Keith, I will definitely put a dab of ca into the holes...

Thanks for the advice Marc..  hinges are already glued, but the material they are made from is very flimsy aluminum from a can, so I think they will lay ok when I finally get the courage to affix them.  (I may be wrong, hence the "courage" part)  :D

I did a little work tonight, but I'm coming off a mild case of stomach flu (about three days worth) so I've been out of the shipyard.  Hopefully tomorrow will be producing results....

Take care my friend. There is a good receipt from alternative medicine I could send you (hot brandy) if you wish

Natural domestic selfmade Serbian brandy of plum (Shljivovica) is esential if you can find it. You are brand new in next 24h

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slivovitz

When I was in Army, realy hard Fly get me down with 41,5℃ body temperature, and I didnt know who I am and where I am. And, as in every army, there was smuggled alchocol Shljivovica, friend made this medicine, and I was brand new in the morning. From that time, there is always Shlhivovica in my home, even I do not drink it (rather good wine or beer or little whiskey with many of ice) for "medical" purpose

Or just a hot tea therapy - min 2-3 lit every day. Yes, you will go often ... but it helps a lot

Thanks, Nenad and Marc.

I feel much better indeed...

After three days of eating hardly anything,  I made pork and cabbage eggrolls last night.  Admiral ate one, I finished the other eight.  I then cooked the remaining pork (close to a pound) and ate that as well (!)  Also had breakfast this morning;  I never eat breakfast!

...the runaway pig has been outdone... :P:D

Nenad;  even though I'm pretty much over this bout, I'd be interested to see your recipe.
