I bought this kit online a few weeks ago, and I’m ready to start building it now.  This is the biggest kit that I’ve done so far, and it was relatively expensive, so I want to get it right.  I would like to try to add some chipping effects on the hull, and I have some chipping fluid from AK interactive, but I’m not sure about what colour to do the base coat in.  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, and I’ll add some pictures once I have something worth taking a picture of.

I’ve taken the hull pieces off the spruce and cleaned them up a bit.  It was at this point that I realized that I have to drill some holes in the hull.  Unfortunately, that means I’ll have to put this on hold until I can get a drill.

I have clippers, 2 pairs of tweezers, clamps, sandpaper, and airbrush, and paint and glue .

I’ve mostly been doing cheap revell and airfix kits, and  I’ve never really felt that I needed magnification.  Looking at the PE parts in this kit is making me reconsider that.

Magnification and good lighting are a must in these scales.

I would think that a hobby knife or scalpel would also be useful, along with a strong carpet blade or metal ruler to help fold and shape the PE.

For a drill get a Pin vise, don’t use a Dremel or it will melt. The list of tools is never ending.

A good set of micro files? A nice set of U-Star Tweezers if you’re going to do PE. If you are going to use PE use superglue, a box of acupuncture needles to apply CA glue and a cigarette lighter to burn off CA build up

I've assembled and primed the hull now, but I'll be renting a cottage for the next week, so I'll have to put the model on hold for now.  Also, does anyone have a good technique for painting all those tiny details on ship decks, especially for 1/700 scale?  I've tried using tiny pieces of tape, but that never seems to work for e, and I always resort to doing it by hand.

Are there any YouTube videos explaining this technique?  Every time I try, a lot of paint ends up bleeding through, and I end up having to do it with a brush

No idea mate, but you can also glue a cleaned up piece to a piece of wood or plastic (like putting it back on a sprue) and painting it then cutting it off again

for the hull, I'm thinking of doing a black base coat, then a few coats of ak heavy chipping fluid, and then my hull colour on top of that to give it a weathered look.  I've never done this before, so I would appreciate any advice greatly.

unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to have to put this on hold, as I keep damaging parts of my airbrush.  I'll continue once I have some proper materials for cleaning my airbrush, as well as the replacement parts I need.

Well, I think I've got my airbrush working again (it appears that the nozzles on these aztek airbrushes can be quite finicky), but I've run out of thinner.  Hopefully I'll be able to get some soon.

I’ve sorted out my airbrush, and have finally gotten around to base coating the hull.  I decided to paint it black, and then add some rust effects with oil paints.  Next, I’ll put on a few layers of chipping fluid, and then the hull color.  I got a little carried away with the rust, but it won’t be all that visible once the hull color is on.

I put two coats of ak worn effects on, and I applied the hull colour (tamiya nato green)

I will start chipping soon.

for the metal parts of the ship, I intend to use tamiya sky grey, although I haven't completely made up my mind

My airbrush clogged again.  This is getting absurd, I feel like every time I use it, the trigger get jammed.  I always make sure to keep it clean, but it is to no avail.  I am considering just getting a new one

I'm using an aztek a470 airbrush with tamiya acrylic paint.  After several hours, I managed to get it working again, but the airbrush is very difficult to put back together again once disassembled.  I do not believe that the airbrush was meant to be disassembled, as doing so voids the warranty, but I got it second-hand, so I figured that I might as well try.

Tamiya acrylic paints have to be diluted with their thinner.

I use 50% paint, 50% thinner in the summer time.

In the winter, you may want to go more 70% paint and 30% thinner. Otherwise, it will run way too much.

 

But you probably know all the above, already.

I’m constantly stripping and cleaning my airbrush, and I do like their paints, which I think with Tamiya lacquer thinner. Acrylics dry the top very quickly so I also have a cotton bud dipped in clean thinner to while the tip regularly.

The chipping looks good, make sure it’s on the facing bits like the bow and bilge keels
