Seehund by king derelict - FINISHED - ICM - 1/72 - PLASTIC - German WWII midget submarine

I thought this might make an interesting return to small sea models after Campanula.

I was a little disappointed in the part count and the moulding quality is not great Just one sprue of parts. Plastic is quite soft.

1303504041_RIMG1286(1280x711).jpg.4a5d221545849b13c3028e8e993eafcc.jpg

so it is really going to be a painting exercise. Maybe I can try a little chipping - not done that before.

The hull halves have no location / alignment features. I used pins through the three lifting eyes to get it all aligned. There is a considerable ridge between the halves to remove

So I have most of the major parts in place and should finish the rest ready for primer.

Interesting build, Alan. I'd like to follow along.

You are very welcome Ken. I hope you enjoy it. I think this will be more of a magazine article rather than a full length book but its a chance to try a few paint techniques and maybe a diorama seeing as the build is not going to wear me out.

Thanks

Interesting model, Alan.  I wasn't aware anyone made one of those.   I'll pull up a chair also.

Very welcome Mark

I knew very little about these German midget subs. They were developed late in the war and had a very limited impact on the outcome. Quiet motors and difficult to detect by Asdic they could have been a menace in the English Channel

There is always room for one more. I know the feeling. I have more than enough to keep me building through a few more lifetimes but then along comes something interesting and worse with a sale and I'm lost again. The sub kick is getting to me . I just bought the 1/35 British X Craft. I think I'm slowly creeping towards getting the U-9 too

I wasn't too impressed with the kit after putting all the bits together. After giving it a coat of black primer I think its redeemed itself. It came out quite well

So now into (for me) uncharted waters. Chipping and weathering experimentation. These little subs weren't in service too long so I don't know if they would actually show rust but I decided to initially add shades of lighter grey to then chip though the dark grey top coat. So the first variations have been added.

187254196_RIMG1327(1280x720).jpg.ce87259892b6b47e36bc1b40f1916f02.jpg

Maybe some rust spots around the arms that hold the torpedoes next.

I'm also thinking about display options. To me it seems submarines are especially difficult becuase they are out of their element. Maybe some sort of diorama.

Thanks for looking in

More shades of grey added as a base for chipping.

I put a light coast of rust on the bows and the torpedo rails.

I actually like how this came out without going further but I want to try the chipping and so we press on

Thanks for looking in

I air brushed Mig chipping solution onto the sub and when it was dry added the top coat of Tamiya dark grey. When that was dry I attacked it with cocktail sticks and stiff brushes I am generally happy with the resulting changes in shades and the way the rust colour came through. For some reason the port side is better than the starboard side. I had hoped for a bit more rust on the torpedo rails but I don't know if I can go over it again after letting it sit for a day now.

Any input from experienced "chippers" is very welcome. Otherwise I think its time for a clear coat and washes. Still thinking about the display.

Thanks for looking it

looks o.k. to me- i think as these wern't very old at wars end less is more regards the weathering- on my armour kits i dry brush humbrol gun metal on to all sharp edges / handrails/ areas with regular footfall.

Keith

Thanks for confirming my thoughts Keith. I have added some bright metal paint to the lifting eyes. I would think they are used often enough that they don't corrode

I looked at the chipping again this morning after everything had dried properly and decided I was happy with how it came out. i sprayed on a cat of gloss and used a black wash to pick out some of teh details. A couple of details were painted and the torpedoes were added. The small number of decals went on well and she is now ready for the matt coat.

A couple of closer shots to show the variation of surface colour.

For a first attempt at this sort of thing I am quite pleased with the result.

I think I have an idea for the display and I've ordered the bits from Amazon.

i hope everyone has a great weekend and many thanks for the comments, likes and for looking in

I really like the effects. Filters (like an AK Panzer blue) will make it look ok amazing. Then a couple of little brown scrapes and rust wash around the hatches, some HB pencil and you’re done

Thank you Greg. I'm happy for a first attempt. I have the AK Blue for Panzer Grey filter so I'll give it a try. Its unopened so another first. With so few parts in the kit and a decent size its an ideal subject to experiment on.

Well. last night was my first attempt to use a filter and I thought I had ruined all the earlier work. I brushed on a light coat of AK Blue for Panzer Grey filter and it looked like everything had disappeared under a monochrome blue coat. I decided that things might look better after a beer (as they often do) and left for the night. This morning the filter has dried and the detail is back. I think the filter has subtly blended the shades together so we have an improvement over the raw patterns earlier.

Some touch up needed while I decide on the rust. I'm somewhat against it given that these craft didn't have very long service lives in the water. I may add a little around the hatch in the rudimentary conning tower

Thanks for looking in and the likes and comments

Still on page one and I think its finished!

The base started with a piece of closed cell foam of some sort that came as packing for some hardware at work.

93700493_RIMG1385(1280x720).jpg.5e6d344b207f5b43cf1c6a4cc145f4c8.jpg

I added a few offcuts to form the basis for ridges and then worked it over with toilet paper and diluted white glue. Once dry I used acrylics to paint and shade the base and then topped it off with sand in the troughs. This is ceramic dust from my Aedes Ars model. It was all fixed with a coat of matt varnish

The model is supported on a 1/8 inch diameter acrylic rod. (8$ for 100 on Amazon - just has to be a use for the remaining 99 7/8 rods). I tried a 1/16 rod but it flexed under the weight of the model and looked naff.

I had toyed with giving the base a light spray of grey to blend with the model better but I think I will leave it as is. We will assume its a sunny day topsides in the Baltic
