Corsaro II by John Ruy - FINISHED - Corel - 1:24 Scale

Found a short video of the Corsaro II and captured some stills that will help with placement and finish of the deck furnishings and fittings.

Hi John,

One thing that stopped me in my tracks when I was building the model was that I broke the bow pulpit. Can you let me know how you fixed that?

You must mean this break right on the tiny hole for the hand rail wire.
image.thumb.jpg.1b1eb76888e18b2907f9568a09561982.jpg

Should be interesting 🧐 May have to build a new one from scratch. I will certainly post the fix when I get it done.

That piece should be coming up soon. Unless I work the deck fittings from stern to stem. LOL 😆 Truth is I will probably put this off for it but to give it some real thought. 🤨

Bow Pulpit…

@rshousha Note repair of Bow Pulpit as follows.

I found the Bow Pulpit provided by Corel to not be a proper fit and needing quite some bit of adjustment (bending). I’m sure this how you found yourself breaking the part. In fact I had planned to fit the original part and cement the broken piece in place on the bow. Unfortunately, I too broke the other leg of the bow pulpit. So, I came up with a plan B and custom fitted the Pulpit into the railing. 🧐

I have found many of the parts provided needing to be “adjusted”. I personally am not impressed with the quality of the kit. I certainly would not recommend this kit for a beginner. 😆

Used my finger clamp method to hold in place while the CA glue cured.

You've gotten through the two biggest hurdles I had; using "finger clamps" on the bow pulpit and installing the cap rail. I think you will enjoy the rest of the build. I can't wait to see your work on the main mast. The spar they supplied is very nice and should look awesome.

I love the destroyer wheel. Do you know that it was Briggs Cunningham who invented that?

Rick, I have no idea who Briggs Cunningham is, or that he invented the Destroyer Ships Wheel. 😆 All I know is I look for details that the model manufacturer has overlooked. It’s pretty easy to bash this kit.

Here is a video I  found on an Italian Site.

Very interesting video to watch the crew working the sails. It’s also a great way to pick up on those extra details. LOL

Next up: I will be changing up the Cowl Ventilators to be more accurate.

Hi John,

You should have a look at how those Dorade boxes work. They're quite an interesting piece of engineering.

Briggs Cunningham was a great yachtsman and auto racer. He is remembered for the "Cunningham" and item of gear that pulls the luff of a sail down, adjusting the draft position much more easily than using a halyards. One can use a Cunningham on any sail and allows you to change sail shape in seconds.

I am not sure what his relationship is to automotive history but I think it is even more impressive than what he did with yachting.

As I have said, I am not impressed with Corel’s supplied fittings and precut parts. These Dorade Boxes and Cowl Ventilators supplied in the kit are just not acceptable to me.

I am replacing the Corel supplied Ventilators with fittings from Bluejacket Shipcrafters.

This is such a beautiful sailboat! The fittings provided are impressive too. This seems to be a high quality model kit.

John,  I’ve been following your resurrection and outstanding completion of this kit with interest.  You’re doing a great job.

As I read your posts, something about this model looked familiar so I looked Corasro II up on the Internet and discovered that although she is a sail training vessel for the Italian Navy, she was designed in the early 1950’s by Sparkman and Stevens, the renown New York Naval City yacht design firm.

Corasro resembles an older Sparkman and Stevens design, the iconic 1930’s era yawl Bolero.  Bolero’s design, very long history, and 2001 restoration is beautifully recounted in the book “In a Class by Herself” by yachting historian John Rousmaniere.  This is a well written, large format book full of color and black and white pictures of the boat.  There is even a quote about someone forgetting to put drain holes in the Dorade vent boxes.  The book was originally published by Mystic Seaport.  It would be a great resource for anyone building a model of one of these boats.

Thanks Roger…

I will look into that book, sounds interesting. I am enjoying building this model, it is different than others I have completed it’s large scale certainly lends to much more attention to the details. 😎

Dorade boxes installed waiting for Ventilators. Kudos to Rick @rshousha

His support is invaluable regarding rigging, Corel “Instructions” are useless, the drawings are good. I just need technical support to understand what I am looking at so I can make sure I have everything in place to rig these mast I am about to build. Thanks Rick

@Roger Pellett bought that book used that should help too.

Some great work there. Well done! Again, I am so impressed with the speed at which you are working.   I am curious to see how this will play out when you put the mizzen boom on. I suspect there are some issues with the plans. We will have to discuss the technicalities of that part of the running rigging off-line.

The little heat-shrink tapes looks especially realistic. At some point you should drop a tiny roll of electrical tape on the deck somewhere. There's always one hanging around while a boat is getting rigged.
