LE ROCHEFORT 1787 by Tobias - 1:36 - Harbor Yacht from ANCRE monograph

Hello everyone,

some know me from the construction of La Palme. On December 24, 2022, I received two more monographs from Ancre, Le Gross and Le Rochefort, from my wife and my two daughters. There was also another package under the tree containing a few pear boards, this was my son's contribution. My loved ones have known for a long time that I am very interested in both ships and have decided to make me very happy for Christmas. Many are now wondering why do two projects at the same time? Well I want to use Le Rochefort to learn more so as not to mess up La Palme. Yes, I admit it is not easy to close both projects at the same time and requires a high level of concentration and you have to separate the two. Anyway, Le Rochefort started on December 26th, 2022 and I don't want to withhold it from you. A very big inspiration and role model is @No Idea,  who with his wonderful construction is also a little guilty that I build this beautiful harbor yacht. Beginning of the construction of the frames, I have already used this principle at La Palme and I copy the attached plan in which the frames can be seen in profile and mark the frame halves with different colors. On French ships, the direction of construction often changes in the middle and it is a relief to make as well as to install.

When building the frames, I made a small tool, I call it the "auxiliary keel", which I use when milling the floor wood and when assembling it.

 

 

 

The width of the frames on the scale 1:36 is 5.3mm, my wooden boards are 5.5mm wide, which means I have to reduce them to 10.6mm after gluing. I use a wooden board to which I attach sandpaper (120 grit) with double-sided adhesive tape.

After a few weeks, the framework of frames is ready and the next step comes, the individual nails that connect the double frames. In the last picture the comparison to La Palme both on a scale of 1:36.

In the following pictures I have marked the spacers in the frames, as a reference I use plan no. 11 (red arrows) they are embedded a little in the frame. Milling and nailing was the order of the day for a while.

A little insight into my workshop, Le Coureur is in the top right of the display case, next to it on the shelf is my first model of the whaler Essex, on the bottom right is La Palme and on the left is Le Rochefort.

 

The next step was to grind or scrape the inside. This is only done with various scrapers, then I inserted and adjusted all the wedges.

Next, I fitted the keel, fastened it, and attached the nails. The Balkweger was marked and adjusted in the following step. The Balkwegers are also interlocked.

After the scaffolding was in place I could start with the inner floorboards, it should be mentioned here that the monograph states that these floorboards were additionally sealed to keep the cargo area absolutely dry. I made two patterns, one with brown tissue paper and one with red-brown tissue paper. I finally decided on the brown. Laying the floorboards is very time-consuming because I water and adjust the floorboards in the bow and stern areas, and add the tissue paper.

During the drying times, I am busy with preparations such as the fattening store, pump shaft and the loading area floor. Now that is the current status after 6 months of construction. The plan is that the floorboards will still be laid, then Le Rochefort will take a summer break and I will devote myself to La Palme again. thank you for your likes and comments. The planking is complete and Le Rochefort is going on its summer break.

 

It will continue on La Palme in the next few weeks. The plans have already been put up again.

Nice job Tobias - I found that planking the ceiling was a particularly time consuming and tricky job; especially at the stern where it has to rise to the top of the wing transom.

You say it took a lot of time, plus the 1:36 scale makes it very tight.

Hello everyone, another update on Le Rochefort. After the small break in the summer, I'm more drawn to the workshop again in the evenings. I have started with the cross beams for the cargo area and the nails for the interior floorboards. I'm still waiting for my new tools to finish the rest of the nails.

thanks for your interest and likes, much appreciated.

 

Over the last few days I have been able to get a bit further with the interior. Making the front bulkhead, the hold floor and the front false floor.  According to the monograph, the middle 4 (2) rows are not nailed to be able to remove them to access the limber boards underneath. Here I have provided them with small ring eyelets, I hope this is correct, as I could not find anything in the monograph.

Hello everyone, after a tip from Gerard Delacroix, Le Rochefort did not have eyelets to remove the planks but holes to engage them, so this had to be changed.
 

In the next step, I made and fitted all the deck beams and the beam walkways. The rear bulkhead fitted. There is still some work to be done on the deck beams, which will happen in the next few days. For this work I would have liked to have Le Rochefort in 1:24 scale 😂.

Very nice work Tobias   I found that getting the beams to sit in the perfect position quite time consuming but worth it to save loads of sanding to bring the deck fair.  I love the dovetail joints - top job 👍

Hello Mark, thank you. You are absolutely right, it was a very time-consuming job, especially constantly taking beams out and back in and out again and so on.

Hello Brain, thank you. There were 7 small elements in total, to be able to drill them accurately I glued 3 pieces and 4 pieces together and then finished the edges with a file.

Hello everyone,

I've been back on my little harbor yacht for almost 14 days. The plan is to work on Le Rochefort until August. I have completed all of the deck beams and will now install and adjust them piece by piece. At the moment I'm busy with the metal work on the pump house and the pumps themselves and will show another update soon.

Good evening, last week I was busy with the door hinges of the pump house. They're okay for my first hinge.
