I imagine many of the members have already seen the videos and know the story how she was sunk by the British in 1708,  but for those who have not, this is an incredible find, worth billions of Euros/dollars in gold, silver, gems and relics.   In looking at the video, there looks to be some interesting things regarding Spanish ships of the San Jose era.   One that jumped out at me is the cannon.  There is no cascabel but rather an ornate loop.  Time mark 1:08, 1:46, and 2:20  show these very clearly.

Great info Allan

What I find interesting is that the article says it is thousands of feet deep, yet in the picture we see a scuba diver and substantial ambient lighting.  Obviously not a picture of the wreck.

Of course the video depicts a very different environment.

Why can't the media do better than that.

Personally, the legal battle is interesting too. I think the treasure on the ship should stay at the bottom of the sea along with the 600 men who died with it. Every shipwreck is also a mass grave, and should be treated like one. I find it disgusting that all anyone cares about is who the loot belongs to. Not even the historical and research value is considered.

I also can't wait for them to find the Flor de la Mar, a Portuguese carrack loaded with billions of dollars of treasure that lies off the coast of Malaysia.

in the below link other photos of the wreck.

The article is one year old...

I am interested too in the legal battle, since as it was written in an article that I posted some weeks ago: Spain reclaim all its royal galleons (and related content) that are in the sea bottom as of its property, but here Colombia and Bolivia reclain the property too.....  for different reasons.

Spain won the legal battle, with no compensation to the people who spent funds searching for it. The ship, while a merchantman, carried cannons for defense, thus Spain argued that an armed ship is a warship, and won.

There is supposedly a guy in prison who recovered $$$$ in gold from a wreck in US Waters.  He stashed it somewhere and lost a fight with the authorities regarding possession.  He will be released in a while and as he had paid his debt to society will be able to enjoy his loot.  He apparently thinks that this is a good bargain.

Roger are you talking about Tommy Thompson?   An old article (2019) can be read at  https://www.stuartmagazine.com/stuart-life/people/treasure-hunter-tommy-thompson-in-jail-until-he-admits-where-50-million-of-gold-is/
