It's already looking miserable and cold. And well fed rats. May become a meal for somebody. 😝

If I had to guess, it looks very much like a scene from the winter of 1919/1920, when the French were clearing up the mess left behind, and refugees were maybe returning to see what was left of their homes and farms.

Steam engines were very dangerous near the trenches! The smoke would tend to draw artillery fire.

A good book to check out is Tracks to the Trenches by David Guay. It’s about the trench railway systems that were built to supply troops.

Pretty much spot on but December 1918; this will be on the name plate. Also I’ve ordered a set of punch magazine from 1918 armistice to go with it and a French victory medal. There are heaps and heaps of photos of artillery parks post war where the barrels are written on in chalk by the claiming battalions. Here in Australia a there are artillery pieces in front of nearly all RSL’s.

Satirical yes, but it clearly shows that everyone involved knew the import of the American entry into the war....

Well done, Greg.  👍 That scene reminded me of a few winters in Bitburg, Germany in the mid 70s. Brr!
