I'm a new member but have some experience with model ship building. Completed Model Shipways projects are the Forester and the Mary Taylor. Years ago I was about half done with the Model Shipways Essex - 1799 Scale: 5/64. I attached some photos of that effort. Never finished due to life getting in the way.

I recently retired so I now have more time. I found an old Essex kit on E-bay, that was surprisingly complete, and I'm now starring over again. This time I have carved out the lower deck and plan to fit it with cannons from the first model. I hope I haven't screwed it up. We'll see. I attached some beginning photos of the current project.

I haven't found anyone on the forum that has completed this scale model of the Essex. Would love any completed model photos, advise or pointers as I work on this.

Attached are some photos of my completed Mary Taylor as well. Looking forward to my new "retirement" activity.

Once I complete this project I'm thinking about getting the Model Shipways Constitution. I completed the Revell Constitution model when I was in my 20's and would love to build a wood version now.

Looking forward to participating on this forum.

Can anyone help me with a question. Maybe there is somewhere I should be looking on this site for info so just let me know if there is.

The 5/64 scale Essex frigate kit I am working on has long been discontinued. I would like add some additional cannons. Do you think there is any way for me to get more? They are britannia metal. The old Model Shipways catalog I have has them listed as items 54A & B. The cannon is 5/8" long and he carriage is 3/8" long. I haven't found anything comparable in current catalogs. I think I will contact Bluejacket to see if they might have any, but I thought I would ask here first.

Do you think there is any chance of me finding some more? If there is a better way for me to ask this type of question just let me know as I'm new to this site.

Welcome aboard mate !    Let' see ... 5/64 is not used much these days as a 'scale',  so I'll have to try and figure.  If the cannon is 5/8" long, that would be .625".  Now in the scale of 1:128 (not uncommon in "old' kits, like Scientific models sold in the 70s)  .625 x 128 = 80" ... or 6 feet 8inches long ... perhaps a plausible size.  Looking on line at a data point (if it is the same Essex) a hull of 185' at 1:128 scale would be about 17.3" ... (185/128 x 12) also a plausible model size.

So if MS doesn't have anything suitable, (and my educated guesses are right) you might try looking on line for model cannons that are 1:128 scale.

Welcome aboard to MSW Dave.  Your models are wonderful.  I tried to build a solid hull ship in the 70's and failed miserably.  There is a treasure trove of information in the modeling tips section of the MSW website.

Dave, do they need to be britannia?  If not, have a look through our sponsors list on the front page.  Last time I looked, Bluejacket had britannia cannons still but it's been awhile.   The world has moved on a bit and while brass cannon are available, I think they're slowly going way in favor of 3D printed ones.   Just check the sites and see what what they have, by size, not scale.
