Hello all

I found this forum while searching for information for a kit I finally bought. Looks like a great site!

So I'm getting ready to get ready.. to begin my next winter project. It's the 1:64th Bluenose by Model Shipways. I'll probably slowly start building sometime in September. In the meantime I'll do some research. My goal is to plank the model as accurate as possible and practical. I'd like to paint the hull in accurate colors and have the planking details show through. Much like the real ship I've seen in photos. So any help and guidance is greatly appreciated.

I've been building models and many other things my entire life. Yes, even as a baby with blocks.. lol. I've built quite a few wooden boat model kits.. If there's interest I can provide some photos .. a couple of them are plank on frame. They came out fine but I know I can greatly improve on my planking skills. Should be fun! And I do plan on finishing it! Really !!!

I will start a build log soon. But first.. I don't  see the usual 'Star a New Topic' button inside the kit build log category. Such as the New Member category has the button. Am I doing something wrong? I know I'm properly logged in. It's probably staring at me in the face somewhere. A little assistance is appreciated.

Thanks

Terry

Welcome aboard! Wooden ship builds are categorized by year of launch, so your Bluenose will go in the "Kit build logs for subjects built from 1901 - Present Day" sub-forum. That's where you'll find the new topic button. Make sure to read the "starting and naming your build log" pinned topic at the to of the sub-forum.

Cheers!

Welcome aboard! You will find many build logs for Bluenose on this site which will be a big help for you.

I see you've built one. You have a build log? Please excuse my ignorance.. How do I find your build log. In 1901 to present I don't see a search function anywhere. No search for user name or kit.

Welcome aboard!

It may vary based on how you are accessing the forum, but in the browser based interface there is a search field near the upper right corner.   If you type something in the box it defaults to searching the current topic.  If you click on the magnifier, it shows many options.  If you select "topics" under content type, a drop down menu should appear that allows you to select the 1901 to present subforum.   Click on "content titles only" and enter bluenose in the search box and you will see many topics for bluenose build logs.

When you find a Bluenose build log, at the top there should be tags (in the case below I pasted in, "bluenose", "model shipways", and "finished" because it is finished). Click on the tag and you'll bring up other builds that used that tag. When you create a build log make sure you add tags yourself so others can find your build log later. There will also be "bluenose ii" build logs that I think are from Bluejacket (different ship, different model). Some build logs of that model might use "bluenose" instead of "bluenose ii".

I'll sometimes also search on google (for builds and topics), adding "site:modelshipworld.com" to the search since google search often works a bit better than search on the forum itself. This is true for most web sites I've found.

Did you check out this video series? The guy building the Bluenose isn't (by his own admission) an expert model ship builder (or at least wasn't when he build this) but he can maybe point out some issues he had along the way and how he dealt with them:

Thanks much! Excellent info. I'll be sure to add the tags in my log.

And yes.. I've been watching Gary Brinker's YouTube videos. He's pointed out a lot of things I've made mental notes of. And he's quite entertaining.. haha

Ok.. I started a build log. I hope I did it all correctly. Check it out. Let me know.

Looks right.

I like it when people have links to their build logs in their signature at the bottom - sometimes people reference their own builds, sometimes it's nice to see what else someone builds when you like what you see.

To add something to the signature (bottom) go to your account settings (under your user name at the top) and then select signature.
