I scanned some Detail Photos of Bohuslän I made 30 years ago in Gothenburg.

I guess they are helpful for model building, I made them for this case.

The file is 21MB, you can find it here.

Top Pictures Uwe !,

can highly recommend for all Bohuslän modelers to share this link with you,

Hello and a happy new year.

A small update,

Here is the double frames where the planks will meet in the middle:

post-6862-0-15755100-1388666866_thumb.jpg

post-6862-0-84492100-1388666867_thumb.jpg

I would have prefered to do a overlapping of the planks at the two middle frames but the planks are too short for that.

They are supplied in two lengths with the shorter that fits the rear.

I also missed this problem with the deck and had to break it up again.

post-6862-0-53974900-1388666869_thumb.jpg

First two planks:

post-6862-0-46580800-1388666873_thumb.jpg

The deck shape does not follow the shape that the planks make at the frames... A lot of heavy sanding and use of woodfiller to come.

I found out that the thin veneer supplied is VERY bristle an breaks very easy. It breaks even when I try to sand it so one has to sand with a light touch and so takes a lot of time...

This is as far as I got yesterday...

Thanks john,

it's just so BIG. keep bumping it into stuff when I turn it around etc. have to clear the dining room table everytime I turn the hull 90 degrees.

And the ol' Moo I share blanket with is starting to have doubts on where it should go when (if) it's finished.  ;)

Hi, puckotret,

do you think it would be better to take balsa-stripes to plank the hull? I guess if I take stripes 100cm long they must fit to the hull…

hello Uwe,

Wish I had a building cradle like that when I assembled the frames. It would have made life easier....

I don't know how hard it would be to handle 1 metre long planks, but what I would have done is this:

post-6862-0-13409300-1388911080_thumb.jpg

The white is how the planks meet now. The bluish is the preferred way of doing it. Letting the planks meet overlapped.

I imagine the planks would be more manageable.

Perhaps a stupid question, is it impossible to have the planks met at any normal frame, rather than just on the double one?

One other way to go is to fit extra pieces of Wood to each frame, thus achieving "meeting points" wherever you desire. Slightly more time consuming though, but I think that would make for a stronger hull, especially considering the challenge regarding sanding that you mentioned.

Did you consider putting balsa blocks between the frames in the bow and stern sections? That would certainly make planking easier once you start to get to more curved planks.

Just my thoughts, sorry for the lenghty post.

Keep up the good work.

The bow is pretty sharp, and at the stern the heaviest curve are the 4 first planks. And the four aft most frames have no gluing points on the section above deck... so no balsa fillers there...

Having shorter planks and more "meeting points" is a good idea. (Though more joints to fill and sand)

There's 8 to 13 cm between each frame. Half of that would be nice. :)

Single planking. But as the planks are not to be seen I can use as much filler I want need to.

A kilo or two will do I suppose...  ^_^

Hi, puckotred,

I prefer long planks, one from bow to stern. I am so far to start planking and will try to use balsa.

I will report how it works.

But you're right: It's not a model for beginners…

Hello boys and girls, time for a little update.

Dreading the planking I thought I'd try doing some small fiddly bits.

The capstan.

What the manual calls Plexi and what I called plastic turned out to be Plexi actually..

I don't know if it's laser-cut or punched out but there's no spruces or moulding traces or anything. Just a small push and the parts pop out.

NICE!

Lots of small discs to assemble.

post-6862-0-01022000-1389513452_thumb.jpg

A mix of Plexi and metal.

post-6862-0-85087200-1389513452_thumb.jpg

They might as well had made this part in Plexi since all the teeth had to be filed clean. It also was too thick. The Plexi has more detail.

I have painted the rest of the capstan but forgot to take a picture of it

The top shaft is also protruding in the wrong direction. Will fix this.

Here you see the original. Some detail is lacking on the model but nothing that bothers me too much. The lack of detail is worst further on in the build.

Hello again

Small update. The build is slow as I'm doing a couple of others as well.

Planking continues:

post-6862-0-13028700-1403339478_thumb.jpg

Some of the frames are spaced extremely far from each other. having problems getting the planks to lay in line between them.

Good thing I've ordered extra filler.

post-6862-0-63012800-1403339515_thumb.jpg

The stand is not wide enough for the finished hull.

I lay a couple of planks every odd day. No hurry since I can't start sanding until spring closes in. -5 degrees C now...

way too cold for outdoor sanding.

Hello Mike,

A late Happy Midsummer's Eve to you as well.

The build is on hold for the time being. Having problems with the planking showing through on the hull. Sanded and used filler 6 times now on entire hull. Still looks like a planked ship...

Thinking of using fiber glass cloth and resin, but if the planking still shows I'll scrap the model.

Also some of the thin plywood is horribly bristle.... breaks if you stare at it too hard....

Puckotred,

As Mike said, interesting build, but I too am surprised at how few frames she has. She should really have many more, to give the hull the correct shape, as it is obvious that a plank is going to go the shortest route between frames – ie. in a straight line, if it's allowed to. Some of the other methods used are surprising too!

Good luck with her, I'm sure you'll find solutions! You and Mike keep warm, with these cold winds!

Mr.Pucko.

Based on the pictures, it doesnt look to bad.

You might want to consider appyling a few layers of primer to the brittle structures. In my experience, the primer adds a bit of strenght to the wood. I use the acetone based primer from Eskader, it works great. Just be careful to sand in between the different layers, as the wood grains raise quite a bit when subjected to the primer.

Keep up the good work, and please dont scrap her!

Hi all,

Still sanding and filling the hull. It seems as summer has settled here in Göteborg so perhaps now I will have some time on the kit.

yesterday I told the kids what I'd do with the kit if it didn't behave soon and got carried away.

Broke of a piece of the bow and have to do some more sanding etc....

Kids NOT impressed!

I also have a lot of yards and stuff for a couple of other builds to run through my lathe before winter is back.

Nice and interesting. The first time i see a Sweden made model ship.

It looks the the quality is not the best, but looks ok to me.

What is the price, compare with the clasical kits: Amati, Corel, Mantua, Mamoli, Occre and the others?

I will look close to your ship, is interesting. Al the best Cristi

Welcome VonHoldinghausen... more frames and stiffer planking would be nice...

cristikc: The model is made in Turkey by Türkmodel on behalf of Nordic Atlast, so it's not really Swedish.

The kit cost me about €280 including the LED lightning. For comparison: here in Sweden the "Granado" by Amati costs €451.

So when or if I finish this it will be a lot of ship for the money.

Parts are curved. When I soak them they straighten out, but curve again when they dry. Even when I clamp them. Some parts I can straighten by gluing them together and the others are hopefully not too visible when painted and enclosed by roof etc.
