San Francisco 2 by lamarvalley - FINISHED - Artesania Latina

I know what you mean Randy, Peterssons caused me to put on the brakes before starting to make masts and even attemp rigging. Seeing your and Robbyns roping and rigging issues made me really spend quite alot of time studying rigging before starting. Its such a large topic and rigging changed so much over time, not to mention the vocabulary involved. It is kinda the reason I got into this hobby in the first place though. If it were EASY everybody would be doing it. When you think about it the aerodynamics of a tall ships sails is as complex as any aircraft or race cars aerodynamic design.

....That being said I think Florencia looks beautiful sporting her canvas wings. I look forward to more pics as you progress.

Randy if you want to get some of the wrinkles out of the sails and make them look like they are catching wind, you can try a trick I used. I ironed all my sails first, but after getting the sails and yards attached along with the bottom corner lines, I then sprayed the sails with spray starch and used a blow dryer on the low setting, to pit wind in the sails and "set" them in that shape. Seemed to work pretty good.

Looks good Randy, try taking off the spray nozzle on the can and rinsing it with hot water. I did not have the trouble when I sprayed mine, it came out in a nice fine mist

Hi Randy, that looks really good.  I like the effect.  It really looks "right".  I've never like sails on these ships because they always seem out of scale and lifeless.  These are about the best I've seen, and the technique really makes sense.

Looks great, Randy! And you're right about the full sails making her look more alive!.

It may be too late, but normally the spritsail would be more vertical, rather than being trussed up like a hammock (of course if that was the intention, I'm sure the idlers and loafers on your ship are thanking you profusely :P )

Nice pic's Randy. She turned out beautifully.

The SF is a rather complex build for a 1st try but you built her like a professional, which shows the natural ability of the builder. Thanks for sharing your Florencia with us all. Plus the many lessons along the way, like the cannon spoked wheels and sealing iron for wood shaping. Your build log has been a source of enjoyment and learning for me. Thanks for your positive verve you bring to MSW.

Seeing her finished makes me want to restart the DSotM. Although I have a couple more books on the Gaff rig I'm waiting to arrive before tying into the rigging (pun intended)

and Florencia is finished!

Beautiful job Randy, so have you had thoughts on what may be next?

It's really hard to believe this was a first build, she is magnificent and did I miss it before or is  the vertical rubbing strakes multi-layer a bash. The detail, especially with the nails looks great.

This one definitely deserve a rereading as all good build logs do, I finally got over my like button phobia so sorry if I flood your like indicator, It will be fun to relive this build as I was along for the ride.
