heres what I tried this time,, I stained my bluenose hull, and used 2 coats of minwax fast dry polyurethane,, sanded it so its all flat,, then I put 5coats of rustoleum triple thick glaze coating on it,, it gets sprayed,, home depot sells it,, it now looks like the hull was dipped into liquid glass,, really super deep look you could not even get with 20 coats of poly, sorry no pics,, no camera, but it dried in mins,, don't really run,, it self levels and somehow goes on super thick. if your into that look.

 

looks like the wood in like 1/4 in under the clear,, really cool stuff, dries crystal clear

Hhm, glad I read this, I'll have to try to remember as I would have used gloss as well. I think satin would be easier for me to apply as well.

I think it looks better that way on my shelf, I do go to those model award shows,, just like having it shine on my shelf with that really deep look, im also not blackening my brass,, because I think that brass makes it look better as well,, I just build the things how I like it,, I don't even use the boats real names,, I name them all after my wife

That is what I like about this hobby.  You have your purists, researchers, builders who try to increase their knowledge and skill and go for the next challenge and those who build for the sheer fun of it whether right or wrong.  The most important thing I would tell newcomers is to have a good time.

I just like building it my way,, I was working on the transom just now, and for some reason the laser part didn't fit, so I ended up just changing the transom, now it looks way better then the original, not too much different, but it looks better I think, I just start doing thing my way, sometimes if the plans don't make sense ill just look at the picture and wing it, after its on the shelf everyone just looks at the colors or stain and sails anyway,, im just not all too picky when it comes to following things to a tee, I don't slap it together or anything,, but I just end up doing it my way I guess

Leroy, thanks for posting your information about the new clear product, there are certainly times when a good  Hacker-craft  gloss coat is needed, I somehow cannot imagine one of the mahogany Chris Craft, or Hacker-Craft  launches with a satin finish.

Like David, I find humour in the diversity that this hobby reflects and the great debates it stimulates. I also agree with fun being the most important factor.

 

I guess if high gloss need not apply, I'm guessing a Pink Floyd themed pilot boat build would give some a stroke.

 

But seriously whether purist or just winging it, if your not doing it because its fun and for yourself, then its a chore. Everyone has differing motivations and each draws from this hobby something different, the beauty is in the sharing of ideas even though there are so many differences in motivation.

In a word - Community. 

 

Leroy, you have the perfect attitude for being a successful builder, even if the only show your Admirals namesake ever see's is a mantle or table top in your home.

We must NEVER forget, an individuals feeling of success can only be defined by that person making their visions into reality.

Keep on winging it Leroy and you will fly higher then you ever thought possible.

As for a finish it is what you want to have.  I usually go with the vessel.  A nice Chris Craft or such dream machine gloss.  A naval vessel fresh out of the yard gloss.  A warship or merchant vessel out in the sea flat.  It all depends on what I am looking for.

I bet there was never a whale boat with a French polish but yet Buck is an awesome builder which goes to show what happens when a luthier turns boat builder. It's all about what drives your personal Verve.

I like having all the brass showing too,, I rather see the shiny brass parts on a model, it makes them stick out more then blackening everything
