HMB Endeavour by DaveRow - FINISHED - Corel - Scale 1:60 - First Build Kit

Recommended Posts

Thanks for checking in on the build fellas.

Don, Chris and Greg, the chains were a big push(effort) to get each made and in place.

And yes an assembly line, like Mr Ford work out, only on a smaller scale helped a lot.

I must thank Pat(Banyan) for putting me onto the resistance welder. It sure makes a neat joint when it all comes together. Their were a few failures along the way, not all plane sailing they say.  Maybe another post for them ?

I've got the shipyard making the cover strips that go over the length of the channels to cover the cats eye shanks at the moment.

Cheers

I had made the 2 Fish Davits a while back.

Since I now have a pretty good method of welding, had a go at the square metal rings and eye for each.

I should of taken more pics of the eye to the ring.

I cut a eye bolt short.

I formed up the square ring out of flat brass with the join on the bottom(slightly pushed out).

The joint was welded, then drill a oversize hole for the eye pin to go through through the joint(even though it split, not a problem)

Finally the pin, in place in the hole, weld it in place, with the joint closing up as well. Hope these 2 picture shows that.

G'day Dave

If I'm not mistaken, the Endeavour only had one davit, but two places where it will go, on each side. When they want the davit they moved it from side to side.

Hi Greg,

Now that would make some sense.

Only put it out to lift an anchor up.

Well I have a spare one then.

Thanks

G'Day dave and Pat

When I was doing some research on the HMS Endeavour, I think I was talking to Anthony Longhusrt from the SMM in Sydney. He told me about the Davit that they didn't put on the replica because of public tripping hazards, that is when he told me there was only one on the original.

Shipyard Update:

You have got to love 4 day weekends(Easter), time to get into some modeling.

Over the last 2 days made the 34 Timberheads and fitted/glued in place.

Still not ready to paint the roughtree rails, cleats to mount and probably get scratched over the next 12 months doing the rigging.

I'll paint the Timberheads though, as I can get to them now.

Hi Dave,

your iron horse looks super clean.

The brass washers you mention, did for fabricate them or purchased them? They really clean up the ends

Hi Slog,

The washer was a purchased brass one.

Very small, one of many I purchased some time ago with miniature 00-90 hex head bolts and nuts.

Hi Dave

I found this pdf today, I don't know if you have seen it before, but it

could be handy for cross checking your rigging plans against.

And for myself it will make it a lot easier to be able to

see where the ropes are belayed.

In the Shipyard Office,

Getting organised for the "Rigging Phase"

Our second shipment of Blocks from Mirek "Classic Models" arrived 2 days ago.

Over 520 blocks in the packages.

They do look a lot better than the kit ones.

In the shipyard.

Being 01 April, I'd just like to say thanks to all you chaps who look in on how my HMB Endeavour is progressing in the Shipyard. I also enjoy seeing what all you chaps are doing on your own Models.

General Pic. (a have quiet a lot of other fixtures that are not in place, I am holding back for the rigging to make sure I don't have something in the road)

Having a break from working directly on the hull -> moving to the 6 cannons.

I used the kit supplied carriages some time ago, mounted the cannons while the planking glue was drying. Seems such a long time ago.

I am sure they are not exactly correct, but I do try to use what I paid for from the kit, if it is similar.

See if I can knock them into shape, add the fittings, blocks & ropes.

I love those blocks, all the hard work is done for you. I'm think once you use them everything else looks like wooden off cuts (except for Chuck's blocks of course). If you don't have the machinery to scratch build your own it's the way to go, considering how many you need to use, it's a time is money argument

Hi Greg,

I saw you got the Classic Model blocks, later in your build. As you say, time vs money, plenty of other things to make.

I worked out they cost me average 45 cents each, no way I could make them for that.

Good looking blocks, pretty dark colour though, they will give a good aged appearance

Hi Steve,

I decided to go for dark blocks all over the rig. Standing and running, mainly so I didn't have to have two(2) color blocks to buy.

I have some lighter ones for the deck guns, and other deck items. I can always darken these up.

Progress on the Cannon/Carriages.

As I had mentioned I am using the "kit" supplied carriages and cannons. Got to use some things from the kit I paid for.

I had fitted the kit wheels and carriage some time ago, and now wanted to see how they looked with some ropes on them.

I rigged the side pulley system with 4mm blocks on the “kit” carriage – not happy with the blocks size, too big.

The 4mm blocks take up too much room along the carriage.

post-13593-0-76464300-1460012972_thumb.jpg

So went to 3mm blocks and smaller rope and eyebolts, hook etc. this looks a lot better I reckon.

post-13593-0-51151700-1460013010_thumb.jpg

However:

Was not happy with the wheels, look too big.

I have this picture of the one of the raised cannons from the Endeavour which has been mounted on a carriage, at the ANMM(but as Steve points out in log #368 , the recoil rope and takle are about face).

post-13593-0-31218900-1460013631_thumb.jpg

This is another of the carriage/cannon in the QLD Maritime Museum

post-13593-0-01463600-1460034517_thumb.jpg

I have thinned the wheels and mocked up the carriage with a collar.

Taken with the old setup beside.

I am pretty happy with the collar design.

post-13593-0-29647000-1460012990_thumb.jpg

And have been making the "bits" that attach to the carriage.

Eye bolts and pins.

I also cut the back out of the carriage, an attempt to make the carriage not so boxy.? for want of a word.

post-13593-0-71908900-1460012999_thumb.jpg

So with all the changes, I have some work for the shipyard to make all the pieces and assemble.

That's looking good Dave.  I agree, the kit stuff is fairly woeful, especially for scale.

Took me forever and I still wasn't happy with mine. They're tiny and quite difficult.

Hi Greg/Pat,

Thanks for looking in.

I don't mind taking the time to sort out what bits and pieces, sizes(proportions), what goes where etc., retro fitting the "kit" carriage is my issue.

If I go by the AOTS and Replica at AMM, then the kit is wrong is so, so many ways.

Maybe I should of just built my own carriages.?

Hi Dave

OMG it was so hard getting the guns to look right at 1:51 scale on my build, and I spent hours trying to get them right, but at 1:60 it will be harder, especially geting the blocks and ropes to look right, and I just gave up on the wheels, just too small to matter. Here's a better pic of another restored Endeavour cannon for your reference. BTW that pic you posted of the cannon in the ANMM is rigged wrong - the recoil rope should be through the other ring that the tackle is hooked to.

Keep up the good work mate

Cheers

Hi Steve,

I picked up the ropes on the AMM are about faced.

The 3mm tackle Pic has the ropes in the right places.

I'll add another Pic of the cannon/carriage in the previous post #363, of the carriage in the Qld Maritime Museum.

Update on Cannon Carriages.

It has been a bit slow in the shipyard, with my sister visiting(not much time for the Endeavour work).

Finally put all the parts together for the 6 Carriages.

This will have to do(as they are), spent a lot of time just getting this far, and tackle still to go for all 6.

Back in the Shipyard,

Little things.

A few of the stern cleats attached to the stern rail and inside.

I purchased some of chuck's cleats, a bit of sanding and they come up good for this scale.

post-13593-0-11254700-1461451085_thumb.jpg

I used 5mm cleats, at 1:60 makes them ~300mm long in actual.

Chuck's 3.5mm and 5mm cleats.

The 3.5's are very small.

Back in the Shipyard,

Fire place(rear) and Oven(front) Flues.

I used 3 sizes of brass tubing.

The Fire Place flue has double walls(tubes), helped in welding the angle joint and 'holding' the small item.

The Oven Flue 1 piece.

For each I added a collar(ring of copper wire) at deck level, with another ring on top of solder wire, that when melted gave the 'fillet'. Blackened each, that wasn't too bad(but my blackening methods not the best), however I painted black as I have done with most of the metal on the boat.
