Another very productive day with the boat , ( mostly spent sanding ) Once the hull was Faired and the Deck sanded , I apllied 2 coats of primer to both the Hull and Deck. I then shot 1 coat of semi-gloss White on the deck and cockpit ( allowing overspray on to the Hull ) Here are the results

Harvey,

The roller used for the jib is a differend one as used for a genaker. You would nead a very big drum to hold the amound of line needed for a gennaker, a furler with a endless line is used.

Unless something goes wrong, you would never take down a sail before the next sail is up, it would cost to much speed!

Pete, your Volvo looks great!

Pete does the keel swig sideways and how does that work?

Hans I have to disagree with you on this one, look at the link to the PDF that explains how the furler works for the Genaker, it is not an endless line.

To be clear I am talking about the model and not a full size boat. I have no knowledge of full size furlers.

Thanks so much for the clarification. Often, discussions like this cross over from model to real thing and back. And I, for one, become easily confused which one we're talking about.

Harvey these boats are really exciting machines they are definitely pushing the envelope. The interesting thing about hull design is that it seem to me that big changes occur because a designer does a what if, and suddenly the old rules dissolve, and the imposable becomes the new norm. the plan veiw of the drawing that Pete posted is a rectangle with one end drawn down to a rounded point, I did this by a simple tracing over the drawing and it is 1.5m long full size, yes I'm tempted to draw more

Michael,

I don't think that we disagree, I was talking about the full size practice! :)

A new form is making an interesting and successful comeback: The whole rectangle with only the frond edges a little bit rounded. Like a barge or a tjalk. Most class rules does not allow this shape but in the mini 650 it is allowed and nearly unbeatable. These yachts are not pleasing to the eye, but Righting Moment to the max makes them fast. Look for pictures of Magnum 747.

Harvey, solo / shorthanded ocean racers have all jibs on a separate foiler hosted ready to use. The sails are so big that changing them would take to much time and energy from the sailor.

Thanks Jay, I am hoping to get the Blue on the Hull today

Thanks Hans, What do you think of the Bruce Farr VO 65 ?

Hi Michael, the Keel cants from Starboard to Port, the Keel acts like a pendulum and is rased toward the windward wide of the Boat with the Dagger Board dropped on the Lee Side ( I hope that explains it ) The Boat Is starting to come together

Thanks Harvey , for the intresting Conversation, on the Roller furling system ( for the model )

Pete,

The OD VO 65 is a very nice boat and probably a little bit less on the edge as the VO70 Box Rule boats. It is a move to an OD boat trying to get more teams involved. It is now easier to step in late and there no risk that your design is of the pace, so less risk for the corporate sponsors.

I loved however the design contest that was always an important part of the Race and that is now gone. You get a VO 65 OD and thats it. Bruce Farr's track record in the last races was not very impressive and so it is a big surprise that his team was asked to design the OD boat. But a cool  boat it is!

The high-end racers like the IMOCA en VO boats are getting so fast that the yachts are the limiting factor, you can't go full throttle all the way. You have to know when you can go full power and when you have to nurse your ship. Compare it with car races: If you think you can keep your foot down all the way you will learn an important lesson in the first corner. This was not so obvious too all VO competitors, see the massive amount of structural failures in the last races. If there is a weak link in this VO 65  the sailors will find it and then you have 8 boats (7 competitors and 1 spare) with a problem in stead of 1.

The built looks great, lots of steps that I will remember when I built this boat.

When I look at the hull, it looks like half a boat because the stern is so wide. I expect it to tapper.

What are you going to do about sails? Create your own or is there a manufacturer that makes custom sails for this type of model.

In between working on the Statenjacht Utrecht, I am also working on a Soling 1m. Because this boat is one of the most popular RC sail model there is company that will create any sails you design.

After doing some advanced searches on Google I found 4 large plans as PDF's (ABN 1 & 2, Illbruck and Ericsson). In due time I will built one of the ABN boats.

Thanks Geoff, I wanted to see some clor on her as well , I like the blue

Thanks Michael, it's been alot of sanding the past few days , I will get the thru deck fittings installed and spray the final coat of white on the deck

Thanks Marc, I will be making my own sails , The Soling is an amazing boat ( I have been fortunate enough to sail one, full size ) and I have looked into the RC version . The next Volvo boat I do will be the new Farr VO65 for this years event
