Peregrine Galley 1700 by NJQUACK - FINISHED - Sergal - 1:60

Hi,  I  rescued this Sergal Peregrine Galley 1700 kit from a flea market.  It was missing all the Hull parts, so I’ve decided to scratch build the Hull and finish the kit.  So far the bulkheads and keel have been cut and glued.  I’ve just begun to plank the hull.  For me this is a big adventure  since this is my first ship build.  Thanks for the warm welcome to this site.  Walter

Wow.  Those early kit designs had a serious lack of bulkhead formers.  If you are not too far into the planking, you might want to consider adding some filler blocks between the bulkheads.  Scrap pine or balsa will do.  It will make getting the proper hull shape easier.

Chris,  Thank you.  I will be adding filler blocks. The first couple planks seemed like an exercise in free form wood bending and creative clamping.  It will also save on having to add filler down the line.  Walter

Hi.

Time for a quick update. The planking is moving along slowly, but that’s to be expected.  Wish I got more blocks in earlier particularly around the bow.  A lesson learned.  The only crazy event so far is when I poked a hole in the hull with a chisel.  I was trying to clean up a few things and got over aggressive.  With a little glue and filler, all patched up and back to planking.  Walter

Completing a first planked hull is a MAJOR milestone that most people that start (especially without the help of this website) never get to.  I look at my first hull with all its issues but I was never so proud of the accomplishment.  You are doing great, keep it up.  Everyday your technique is getting better.

The first planking and sanding are now complete.  I’ve started the second planking and deck planking.  I’m looking forward to doing a much better job on the second planking now that I have a much better idea of what is going on, and the lines of the ship.  Having a lot of fun with this project.

Thank you Don.  It took a while to get the hang of it and understand what was going on.  Everything makes perfect sense when I read about it, but put wood and glue in my hands and something else happens.  I'm looking forward to my next ship to take advantage of all I've learned.

This week I did a bit of work on the stern and rails.

 

From the start of this project the layout of the stern did not seem right to me, In particular the windows on the plans protruded above the deck line.  After reviewing two period paintings (a Willem van de Velde, theYounger from 1706 and a Pete Monamy from 1714), I decided to create my own interpretation complete with a watercolor painting to represent  reflections in the glass.

This week more rails were added, the hatches completed and the ladders completed.   I test fit the masts to insure the holes lined up while there still isn’t a lot of stuff on the decks.

A few days after i did the window reflections I had another idea for creating reflections.  On a future project i may go down to the waterfront and photograph an actual sea or bay scene.  I just have to make sure I don't capture any Jet Ski's.
