Hi Gang,
After a hiatus due to my wife and I having twins, she's dusted off and I'm hoping to recommence this build. I've attached some not so great photos from my iphone - the idea here is just to get a log started and motivate me to get back in the shipyard - for at least a few hours per week.
This build was started back in November of 2009 using Chucks plans that later were used in the Model Expo kit. The woods used were swiss pear from Hobby Mill for almost exclusively with the exception of boxwood for the decks and a little bit of ebony for the false keel and checkerboard flooring in the great cabin. Im a big fan of Fiebings dyed swiss pear and used this method for all black areas with the exceptions I just mentioned. I used three finishes, pure tung oil for the hull, Watcos Danish Oil for the deck fittings and beams, and diluted sanding sealer for the deck.
My goal is to at least get the 6 lb guns rigged and installed along with the ships wheel hopefully by the end of the month so i can begin the headrails this summer if the twins cooperate....
Thats it for now - by the way the photo posts looks a bit different than the old Modelship World - any tips on the best size to upload so they look more standard/fill the screen ?

So after another frustrating session with the head timbers - thought of a bright idea - rather than burn through boxwood - Im going to make templates out of basswood and transfer to box. Lets see if this works....

Thanks Ben, Rusty and Mark - here are the updated photos. I will be adding the channels next in boxwood and dye their inverted knees with Fiebings black leather dye. I will scratch the deadeye strops and chain plate assemblies (hoping to get a torch for Xmas), then its finishing the head rails and adding the stump masts/anchors and mounting her to a display board.
Yancovitch - I did not simulate caulking on the hull planking - not really a fan of that look - and most museum models do not show this detail. You can see from the photos that the Tung Oil finish I used did accentuate the lines of the planking slightly - which was the effect I wanted. I used a number 2 pencil to simulate caulking for the deck planking. As far as treenailing - at this scale i didn't want to bother with it - I do think think the drilling and saw dust method would work well though if you want to go for it. All planks were glued to each other and the bulkheads to try to get as tight of a result as possible. Hope that helps - and thanks for the kind words!

The outside of the the hull is now faired (although I'm bound to find minor issues as I plank) and the planking battens are in place - on with the planking!

Journeyman??? I'm just a mere apprentice still.
After singing a chorus of "Alice's Restaurant" yesterday and a Thanksgiving meal that couldn't be beat... I got to spend time in the shipyard.. yippiee.
I've cut, shaped, and installed two more timbers. Seems that all the curved timbers from port to starboard have different curves and one is canted at about 45 degree angle from the waterline. I'm not sure why. The two finally fitted are for the upper and lower sills for the lights. The top sill timber is also the last deck beam for the quarterdeck. The lower sill is hidden behind the planking.
I still need to fair these two before I go much further. There's two more sets of timbers, one is for the counter and the other is for the taffrail to sit on.
Anyway, here's the picture I took for my checking as the camera shows more than the human eye (to me anyway). I'm pleased with these two timbers and well turn to on fairing them in and trimming down the lower sill timber.

Hello all,
Well I’m happy to say I’ve completed the planking on the portside too. No stealers or drop planks this
side either. All that is needed now is a good deal of sanding and then some wipe on poly. I have to say
planking this way is more time consuming but it works so much better and the run of the planks is much
easier to maintain. Definitely the way I will plank from here on out!
One thing I want to point out is that I handle a model a lot when I’m working on it.
Because of this I would inadvertently rub off some of the pencil marks. To make sure
I didn’t lose the main belt line mark I used a sharpie to mark them. Then if I accidently
rubbed off any markings I could go back to the main mark and redo them.
After I check the hull over and make sure it’s all set I will move on to the stern.

Thanks guys ! I've been searching Ebay/Etsy for vintage drawer/cabinet hardwood knobs to mount her on - thinking that would look sweet along with an ebony stained/dyed display board. That's the next step - as most of you know there is a slight warp on my hull of about 1/16th inch which I think I can mitigate when I mount her. Then I can warp up the channels/chain plates, stub masts, anchors and head rails.
