  3. Go for it and make it happen. We are all here for you. Mort
  4. Glad to have you back. You made the correct choice to get right back up after the fall. This is going to give you invaluable experience in ship model restoration should ever choose to restore someones ship as this is a tremendous learning opportunity. Mort.
  5. I am going to order the Model Ship Ways Kit. I'll kitbash and upgrade the kit where necessary. Truthfully I chose that kit because all things being equal I have a great deal of respect for Model Expo and Marc Mosco in particular. I appreciate all of the suggestions. Happy holidays to all, Mort
  6. I am very sorry to hear this my friend. I Know how I would feel if I were in your shoes. All of the best. Hope to have your build back on line soon, Mort
  7. Happy Anniversary Jim. You are doing a great job. Mort
  8. Hi Jason, On my first builds I glued the masts in place. After reading both Lever and parts of Lees on how the rigging supported the masts on my last 2 builds - Connie and Rattlesnake - I did not glue the masts. I had no trouble keeping them secure as the shrouds and standing rigging kept them in position and secure as they said they would. I intend not to glue them in my Snake as well. However if you have an issue with the mast holes that is another matter. The mast bases will give you some support and you can as they did back in the day put wooden pieces- I forget the term - if they will fit between the mast collar and the mast for further support. Hope this helps, Mort
  9. Hi Jason I am also short of cleats. I made a mistake when I mailed Caldercraft and asked for more. They were great and sent what I asked for but I somehow did not ask for enough. I am going to order some from Bluejacket in Maine. I am embarrassed to ask Caldercraft for more. I have bought the same cleats before from them. Mort
  10. Hi Clare and Crackers, Thanks for the info. For some reason I did not think of Ebay. I will also look into the Bluejacket Kit though I would prefer a plank on bulkhead to a solid hull. I will as I have with all of my previous kits upgrade/and or kitbash any kit I do end up with. Thanks, Mort
  11. Hi Guys, My first choice would be an American Clipper with the Cutty Sark or Thermopylae a very close second. I will look into all of afore mentioned kits. Thanks for all of the reply's and happy holidays to all, Mort
  12. I am seriously considering a clipper ship as my next build. Can anyone recommend a particular kit? The Model Shipways Flying Fish, the Mantua Cutty Sark are the only ones I am aware of. Is anyone familiar with these kits or recommend another kit? Thanks, Mort
  13. Hi guys, I have always completely built the masts with the yards and all blocks attached off the model. I found the blocks, masts and yards easier to install and work with if I did this. I also attached and reeved as much of the standing rigging - with labels taped on their ends for id purposes - and the stays and backstays on one mast all before I stept the masts and yards to the ship. I know this sounds a bit unorthodox but it works for me. Mort
  14. Hi Mike, I have become very interested in the painting of British warships of late since I am building the HMS Snake, the Diana next followed by the Victory. At least that is the plan. I was very impressed with the painting of British frigates in Rob Gardners latest book. I had never noticed red skids before - only black and natural - not that I should be surprised. In retrospect it does make perfect sense. I hope one day to build a 74 - are you listening Caldercraft - Thanks for the quick reply and please the posts coming. Your build is very impressive, Mort
  15. Hi Mike, Welcome back. The old girl looks great. One question, why did you repaint the lifeboat skids black? Thanks, Mort
  16. Hi Jerry, Thanks for the feedback. I have been using halogen lamps that I bought at Staples. Unfortunately one broke at the base. How I do not know and Staples does not carry them any longer. They are basically drafting lamps that clamp on to my work table. Hopefully I can replace it. I do not see any on the internet, Your build is great. I have picked up many tips that will help me when I build my Victory. Please keep those posts coming. Mort
  17. Hi Guys, Interesting my Caldercraft parts arrived today. No problem. They were postmarked 10/28/13. I did not realize it takes that long for snail mail to arrive from England. They must have mailed them to me as soon as they received my snail letter. I apologize, Mort
  18. Hi Jerry, I noticed the combination light and magnifier. I am looking to replace one of my halogen lamps that broke and is not available. I usually wear magnifiers when I work. Are you happy with that light? Is it a halogen? Thanks, Mort
  19. The head rails look great so far. Interesting everyone raves about Caldercrafts customer service. I emailed them 1 month ago and snail mailed them 2 weeks ago and have not heard a thing. Mort
