Hi Rich, I built this model about 6 years ago. I think I gently bent them with my fingers. Hope this helps, Mort PS It is a great kit. You will be very happy with the finished product..

Glad to have you back. You made the correct choice to get right back up after the fall. This is going to give you invaluable experience in ship model restoration should ever choose to restore someones ship as this is a tremendous learning opportunity. Mort.

I am going to order the Model Ship Ways Kit. I'll kitbash and upgrade the kit where necessary. Truthfully I chose that kit because all things being equal I have a great deal of respect for Model Expo and Marc Mosco in particular. I appreciate all of the suggestions. Happy holidays to all, Mort

Hi Jason, On my first builds I glued the masts in place. After reading both Lever and parts of Lees on how the rigging supported the masts on my last 2 builds - Connie and Rattlesnake - I did not glue the masts. I had no trouble keeping them secure as the shrouds and standing rigging kept them in position and secure as they said they would. I intend not to glue them in my Snake as well. However if you have an issue with the mast holes that is another matter. The mast bases will give you some support and you can as they did back in the day put wooden pieces- I forget the term - if they will fit between the mast collar and the mast for further support. Hope this helps, Mort

Hi Jason I am also short of cleats. I made a mistake when I mailed Caldercraft and asked for more. They were great and sent what I asked for but I somehow did not ask for enough. I am going to order some from Bluejacket in Maine. I am embarrassed to ask Caldercraft for more. I have bought the same cleats before from them. Mort

Hi Clare and Crackers, Thanks for the info. For some reason I did not think of Ebay. I will also look into the Bluejacket Kit though I would prefer a plank on bulkhead to a solid hull. I will as I have with all of my previous kits upgrade/and or kitbash any kit I do end up with. Thanks, Mort

Hi Guys, My first choice would be an American Clipper with the Cutty Sark or Thermopylae a very close second. I will look into all of afore mentioned kits. Thanks for all of the reply's and happy holidays to all, Mort

I am seriously considering a clipper ship as my next build. Can anyone recommend a particular kit? The Model Shipways Flying Fish, the Mantua Cutty Sark are the only ones I am aware of. Is anyone familiar with these kits or recommend another kit? Thanks, Mort

Hi guys, I have always completely built the masts with the yards and all blocks attached off the model. I found the blocks, masts and yards easier to install and work with if I did this. I also attached and reeved as much of the standing rigging - with labels taped on their ends for id purposes - and the stays and backstays on one mast all before I stept the masts and yards to the ship. I know this sounds a bit unorthodox but it works for me. Mort

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
