I am seriously considering a clipper ship as my next build. Can anyone recommend a particular kit? The Model Shipways Flying Fish, the Mantua Cutty Sark are the only ones I am aware of. Is anyone familiar with these kits or recommend another kit? Thanks, Mort

Hi guys, I have always completely built the masts with the yards and all blocks attached off the model. I found the blocks, masts and yards easier to install and work with if I did this. I also attached and reeved as much of the standing rigging - with labels taped on their ends for id purposes - and the stays and backstays on one mast all before I stept the masts and yards to the ship. I know this sounds a bit unorthodox but it works for me. Mort

Hi Mike, I have become very interested in the painting of British warships of late since I am building the HMS Snake, the Diana next followed by the Victory. At least that is the plan. I was very impressed with the painting of British frigates in Rob Gardners latest book. I had never noticed red skids before - only black and natural - not that I should be surprised. In retrospect it does make perfect sense. I hope one day to build a 74 - are you listening Caldercraft - Thanks for the quick reply and please the posts coming. Your build is very impressive, Mort

Hi Jerry, Thanks for the feedback. I have been using halogen lamps that I bought at Staples. Unfortunately one broke at the base. How I do not know and Staples does not carry them any longer. They are basically drafting lamps that clamp on to my work table. Hopefully I can replace it. I do not see any on the internet, Your build is great. I have picked up many tips that will help me when I build my Victory. Please keep those posts coming. Mort

Hi Jerry, I noticed the combination light and magnifier. I am looking to replace one of my halogen lamps that broke and is not available. I usually wear magnifiers when I work. Are you happy with that light? Is it a halogen? Thanks, Mort

Hi Eric, Unpin and remove pattern #270. Take one of the planks that you are going to use for your first planking and place it against the bulkheads from the bow to the stern. The plank must lay true - properly - against the bulkheads. If the plank does not you must adjust each bulkhead until the plank does lay true. Either file the bulkhead down a bit if the plank bulges outward or glue a piece of a plank to the bulkhead if the plank buckles slightly inward. Usually the first 3 or 4 and last 3 or 4 bulkheads also have to be beveled for the planks to lie properly. You might also consider filling in the space between the first bulkhead and the bow in order to give the planks more support at the bow and the same goes for the stern with some scrap wood. From looking at the picture, the second bulkhead- the one with the green pin - needs to be raised and the third needs to be beveled and raised. Hope this helps, Mort

Hi Guys, Just a comment. Why don't you make up the pin rails first and mark where they belong on the bulworks but do not glue them in place. Next rig your cannons and then glue the pin rails in place. The extra rigging room will come in handy. Mort

Hi Jim, I see in post #122 your mizzen mast base part #87. Was one included with your kit or did you make your own as my kit did not have one. Also it seems we need 30 chainplate brackets part #111. I only had 24 in my kit how many did yours come with? Thanks, Mort

I too am considering the Diana as my next build and am also hoping for that Caldercraft 74 to be released. I am also considering purchasing the Amati 74 if all else fails as that looks like a nice kit. Mort

Hi Mobbsie, Are you familiar with the book by Anthony Deane "Nelson's Favourite" HMS Agamemnon at War 1781- 1809? It is a biography of the ship from her launching thru her sinking. It covers her life, various naval practices, Nelson, Lady Hamilton. It is an interesting read for anyone interested in the ship herself or the war against Napoleon. Mort
