The mitre bar, extended fence are essential, the cross cut table is of great benefit and a must. Zero clearance inserts are handy, but I seldom use it. The 3 inch, 90T, .03 slitting blade is all I ever use. I’d get a couple of those. I have the micro meter stop and never ever use it.  I’ve had my saw since 2008 and never replaced the belt. The other might be useful, but not for me.

I would buy the auxiliary pack and extra belt although I have used my Saw for many years without having to replace the belt.  The screws that hold down the insert plates are tiny and easy to lose.  I have the micrometer stop and always never use it.  I like the 3in 90 tooth blade for cutting wood.  I also have a very fine, sorry, I don’t know the tooth count, blade for cutting brass sheet and tubing.  I have a 10in table saw so don’t use the Byrnes saw for cutting heavy wood stock.  Zero clearance inserts are easily made from thin craft plywood.

Before you use the saw-  Paint the miter pin a bright color!  Mine is painted Day-Glow orange.  I have dropped it many times and would have lost it if it was not painted.

    Cant frames (fore)
    Happy 4th everyone! 🎆

I started on the cant framing over the weekend. The first frames to go in are cant #1. They will also hold the front of the top jig in place.  I made a slight adjustment to the foot of each cant in order to get a snug fit into the deadwood. While using a machinist square, I moved the frames outward a wee bit beyond the etched line on the strips in order to clear the bearding line. Not much, maybe 1/64" or even less. That was it. I was very surprised to see that the cants went in square to the build board.

The paper template comes in handy as a double check on what you are doing. I actually prefer using it over just relying on the build board plan. The front of the template is at the aft edge of the rabbet as seen from above.

Only ten more to go. Oh, yes I accidentally hit the top of the gammoning knee. Luckily it came off clean for easy replacement later on. Much later on!

Your username in the titles of your post will not change. Then I had to change them all separately, one by one.

I have followed your advice, right now I am working with styrene strips, takes time but the outcome is great

Starting the back of the galley now.

It is easier to work on it outside of the hull, l am amazed at how nice the maple that I cut from the big log 50 years ago still works and planes up with such a lovely lustre. I’m guessing it is because it has been air dried.

    Hi Greg,
I actually don't know. I used all the laser cut parts and did not alter anything. But when I put the figurehead on the model, it somehow did not fit properly. The position was  too far forward. So the only posibility was to cut the scrollwork or to cut away a part of the arm of the figurehead. I took the scrollwork.

The Badger paints are acrylics - thinned with water.

A couple of thoughts.  I believe that the Model Master paints were enamels- thinned with solvents.  The Badger paints.  Are they acrylic and compatible with over painting or touching up Model Master paints.

In matching colors, I would suggest comparing the two when both are dry. Some paints change color slightly when drying.

Thanks for the reply. For what it’s worth, the Badger looks more accurate. It’s darker. But you’re correct, it would be very difficult to say the least to repaint now.

When I developed the Badger line of Marine paints I matched the colors to Snyder and Shorts Paint Chips.  I  have no idea of the accuracy of the MM paints.  But it doesn't matter if the two don't match and you probably don't wish to repaint all the MM covered areas.😊

Old NRJ issues, those published approximately before the year 2000 contain a wealth of information similar to that now found on MSW.  Fortunately, much of this is included in the two volumes of Shop Notes available from the NRG office.
These are an invaluable resource for those of us wishing to handcraft models using “old school” methods.

Each volume includes an entire chapter relating to finishing; paint, varnish, etc.  volume I includes mixing paints using Japan colors and volume II color charts for commonly used Nineteenth Century paints.  This might be your nest resource for matching your grey paint.

The "easy" stuff first - the cap rail at the waist.

I did not have to do anything special to get the 5/16" strip to cover the rail so my fairing job (at least at the waist) must have been sufficient.

Keeping busy with adding the inboard bulwarks while also building the belfry.

Will fit the drifts and rounded rails as time and paint drying permits.

Masking tape is to keep small pieces and sawdust out of the completed areas. Even my mini vacuum has a hard time getting into all the corners. Trying not to make cleaning up any harder than necessary.

Nice fix. I had a similar problem planking alert, but I caught it a bit earlier before it had become so pronounced and was able to just adjust the thickness of the planks to compensate.

OK, I have just finished what I need to regarding building up the new Speedy hull.

These pics will show what has changed. The old Speedy required planking all the way to the top of the bulwarks, also the inner bulwarks.

The new version is completely pre cut from the main wale up, with spirketting added for the inner bulwarks, plus engraved planking and treenail detail for all surfaces. All channels, inner bulwark belaying racks and cleats now slot and glue into place, in pre cut slots, saving the need for pinning and gluing.

Please bear in mind that the model shown has no real finishing, no varnish etc. It was used just to add new pictures to the revised manual.

I will now spend the rest of the week updating the manual, ready to send to printers, and next week, start cutting the new sheets, so I hope to have this re released in around 2 weeks.
