  1. Just an aside -- we don't hear too much about developments at Mantua/Panart/Sergal. It's a company that gets a lot of heat for its perceived outdated construction methods, clunky fittings, and indecipherable instructions. It's apparent, though, based on the photos you've provided, that they are at least making some efforts to improve their kits (laser-cut parts and etched deck, for example). The stern facade, despite whatever its shortcomings might be, at least looks sharp, and visually speaking it compares well to some of the molded stern ornamentation seen in some other kits.
  2. Just needed your username added is all -- already fixed.
  3. It sounds like you have thought this through and have a good plan in mind, Mark. Wishing you every success!
  4. Hello and welcome, Sparky. If you haven't already, here's the entry on naming build logs. If you're pretty sure that your model is a generic vessel, you can just say "whaling ship". I look forward to seeing your work -- restorations are often very interesting projects. Cheers!
  5. So glad to see that you didn't lose interest completely -- your otter boards look amazing. I enjoyed reading your description of their history, as my academic background is in fisheries science (although leaning heavily toward salmonid ecology, not marine fisheries). I do remember trawling techniques being discussed in class, and I had the good fortune to observe an otter trawl on our university's research vessel. I recall that they are devastatingly effective on ground fisheries and not very selective, resulting in a lot of by-catch. Nevertheless, ground fish were a big component of the local catch where I grew up, and therefore otter trawls were an important aspect of the industry. Cheers!
  6. "Better job" is the correct answer, and Sam has given you the proper advice. To that I would add, "Don't use flash photography when taking pictures for MSW," because that always makes the gaps show up worse than they appear in real life. Ask me how I know this. 😟 Cheers!
  7. Hi, TKAM! I have been busy updating the build logs area of our site, and the MS longboat turns up frequently there. Click here to see a partial list of other builds for this kit. Cheers!
  8. Marcus, I somehow missed your catboat build that you provided the link for -- that one came out very nice!
  9. She's very presentable, and success with even a "simple" kit does wonders for one's confidence going into the next challenge. Congrats!
  10. Outstanding work! It's a shame that Midwest felt the need to drop their boat kits from their lineup.
  11. You have passed a very significant milestone with the completion of the hull planking. Cheers!
  12. Hi! I presume you are asking about the old Model Shipways kit? It's in 3/16" scale, or 1/64. BTW, check out the ship's boat kits from Master Korabel -- they are in 1/72 scale, but one of them may be an appropriate size for you.
  13. Welcome aboard! Such expertise as you describe does indeed exist within our group -- but I am not one of those experts. Looking forward to seeing the fruits of your research. Cheers!
  14. Outstanding work, David! She looks a treat. Bob, just my two cents, but basswood is more than adequate if you intend to hide all your work under paint (and PoB II has such a pretty paint job). Also, being a large model, replacing the kit wood might cost you some. Cheers!
  15. Hmm -- it's really hard, for me at least, to tell what shape that #18 should have exactly. However, we have any number of members here who have finished one or another kit version of Endeavour and should be able to give you some idea of how to proceed. I'm going to modify the title of this thread again to see if we can't get you some more capable help. Cheers!
  16. Well, the first step to getting help is to make a post title that clearly states what you're looking for (I fixed that for you -- no charge). Second, do your kit plans show any full-size parts templates? If so, you can use those to scratch-build some replacement parts. Third, from whom did you purchase the kit? At least one vendor, Model Expo, will replace any missing parts. That should get you started. Cheers!
  17. I have a Mk. I and a Mk. V in my card model stash. I'll get to one or the other -- someday.
