ccoyle got a reaction from popeye the sailor in USS ENGLAND (DE-635) by ccoyle - FINISHED - HMV - 1/250 - CARD
Step 24
One of the Step 24 elements is the racks that are part of each K-gun station. The kit includes an option for building simplified racks that have printed depth charges, or one can choose to cut out the printed charges out and swap them for three-dimensional ones. The detail set includes laser-cut parts to replace some of the printed parts. I went with the most detailed option. It can be done, but it's a tedious process. Bending and gluing the rack parts together is kind of like trying to assemble a 1:1 scale spider, and of course each of the four depth charges needing to be built is a rolled cylinder with two end pieces. A finished rack includes 16 parts, and there will eventually be 8 racks (plus the stern racks, which will be even more complex). So far I have completed a grand total of - - one.

ccoyle reacted to rwiederrich in Western Shore 1874 by rwierrich - 1/96 - Clipper
What a whirlwind of building adventure since I began this log for the Western Shore.
The Great Republic is finished.....I abandoned the old Glory of the Seas and built an entirely new one from scratch. Waiting for confermation from the museum I've contacted about her display.....and now.......
Speaking to Steve Priske concerning his own builds of the Western Shore......I'm getting excited. there is still much more research to be done and supplies to be acquired but she is in the *Que*.
Another painting of her.

ccoyle reacted to Patrick Matthews in Fire Fighter
Years ago I attempted to correct the Revell Fire Fighter kit with a load of 3d printed parts. Now I've finally completed a CAD model of FF, and posted it and a bunch of supporting info on GrabCAD for free download.
No printable parts in the file, but I've created a correct shape for the hull and house, and show where all the "ornaments" are hung:
https://grabcad.com/library/fire-fighter-fireboat-1
You can spin the model around using GrabCAD's 3d viewer.

Well mates, she looks a bit of a mess at the moment, but I have all the lines for the fore course run. Now just need to tension them and tie them down…

014 - Completion of Second Planking
I have now completed the second planking of the left-hand side. The hull has also been sanded smooth, starting with 120 grit sandpaper and finished with 320 grit sandpaper. Although the hull looks and feels smooth, I am sure that when I apply a coat of white primer to the hull (below the waterline) there will be a few areas requiring further attention to correct before the final coats of paint can be applied.

013 - Start of Second Planking Left-Hand Side
I have now made a start of the left-hand side second planking. I thought I would share my process in this respect. As can be seen in the first few photos I have added one plank below the outer bulwark pattern, and I have also added the garboard plank to along the keel.
I have now fitted the first three planks below the outer bulwark pattern. I did not get the clean joint I was after between the 2nd plank and the counter pattern so it will require a very small amount of filler.
I am also preparing the plank that sits next to the garboard plank. As there is a bend at the stern, I soaked the plank for a few minutes in hot water and then clamped the plank to the hull. The plank will be left to dry so the plank can retain the bend before it is glued in place.

Works in dockyard at Full speed. I just say im quite shocked how much must be rail stanchions around mizzen mast tilt inwards for shrouds to come straight. Its slow tedious proces with many curvatures and Angles to watch....Im not good ať building houses so i decided to throw away way bad toyish main deck house with imperfections and will build new one maybe over christmas. Seems like my rigging will be postponed to next year ( probably if not later, byť untill im 100 percent Happy with her body i wont proceed:) ...All Made installments around masts and working stuff like púmp and houses will now be properly built Down into final floor.
From Work ongoing..main deck flooring begun....hardest part on stbd side done.

Step 23
This step didn't require too much work: searchlights, signal lamps, Carley floats, and a couple of lockers. The next step will include construction of the depth charge racks. 😮

ccoyle reacted to Nek0 in L'Ambitieux by Nek0 - Altaya
Yes, exactly ! It's mainly due to the fact that I First set the wales and then the planking. Altaya tell us to fully cover the hull with planking, and finally glue the wales. It's more difficult to get a correct result this way.
I Continue the work and it's a real pleasure to see the ship take form. The first metal parts are glued and they are perfect. This kit is a real good surprise !

All done!! Finished the model today. Rigging all done and the flags placed on the halliards. I rigged the 3 boats to their corresponding davits. One disclaimer…. Somehow I could not find the 2 remaining open chocks to place on the bow! I searched my working area on hands and knees to no avail. I will either give Bluejacket a call and have them send me a couple of them or wait until next summer when we go up to Maine for our annual vacation. Thanks everyone for following my build as well as your constructive comments. Laxian Key, looking forward to see how your model is going!

So many learning experiences. After all hope was almost lost I hit on a close-enough match for the grey. Here I post finishing prop #2, re-doing green, using this amazing product Mr. Mask Sol (a paintable rubber that rubs off with a finger pad) for portholes, touch-up including overspray mistakes, and more. The UA617 Italian Anti-vegetativo Verde Scuro is a new bottle. I notice black is a component of this paint as it settles. I tried touch up with a brush and either the new bottle is slightly different in color or it was the thickness of the green when I thinned it for airbrush as it showed a different color streak where I touched up. I tossed the old airbrush green and mixed up a fresh thicker batch and applied it for great success. Lastly I've started touching up the candy cane deck.

Sprits'l yard braces and foremast yard braces in place. Obviously, a lot of tensioning and retensioning has yet to be done. I thought I had that done on the upper stays, but nope. Oh well, good thing I have debonder on hand. Braces can droop, but I will wait until they are all in place, and the backstays are finalized before I try to get it all right. Topmast and t'gallant mast backstays reconnected. My missing the mark on the upper fore and aft stays made me delay finalizing them.
I can't believe how hard it is to belay lines. I do not remember its being anywhere near this hard when doing my plastic ship models as a kid.
