I have a Blue Nose model I built In 1976 using cheap “model airplane” glue and spray paint. I built a plywood box for it and carried it around in our many moves while in the Army, exposed to all kinds of things. Other than dust since it’s now on top of a cabinet in my work shop, it doesn’t look much different than when I built it.

I doubt my 10 models or the ones I build after them, and not counting that one, will be valued heirlooms by my kids. So I’ll just enjoy them while I’m here and not be concerned about their archival quality. However, so far I’ve experienced zero problems with the better quality CA and Acrylics I use now. A fun discussion but I have no expectations of a call from the Smithsonian 😁

    Stitching the Sail...

Raided the wife’s sewing room, disappearing ink. Who knew?

    Ironing the seams...

    Gluing down the folded seam...

Marking one at a time and repeat folding ironing and glueing.

Set up the wife’s sewing machine for 1/16th inch Zig Zag stitch. She said WHAT?

Lots of practice runs on spare material.

Also needed the machine to stitch in slow-mo. 😆 YES! TEDIOUS PAINFULLY SO...

    Perseverance, pays off. 😎

    Successful stitching of a Sail.

Working on Mast hoops and thimbles. Waiting on my order of MS rope to arrive.

Next up Bolt Rope, Shrouds and Rigging. Onwards 🍻

Completed all tubs, casks and buckets. Used Early American stain and a coat of Varathane Clear Satin. Used Testors Striping tape for copper bands and painted them black.

Pretty much finished the bow sprit area. Still need to put on the braces for the yard but I think I am going to wait until I get some of the fore mast sails in so I don’t have to work around the brace lines.

It has not been a a very productive week in terms of forward progress. I ended up not liking how the jib sail came out so I took it down and made another one which came out much better in terms of texture. The first one had lots of small wrinkles that when you looked at it he sail by itself didn’t seem too bad. But when it was hanging next to the other sails I did not like it.

Also had to redirect some of my lines to adjacent belaying points several times as more lines were added to keel them looking organized. Put some on take some off.

I am hoping the bow area rigging is the most involved and the rest goes easier. I spent quite a bit of time reviewing how it all worked so it made some sense when building.

Time to start at the top with the fore royal and work my way down. I decided to leave off the fore staysail...at least for now.   It was going to be set flying so I guess it could be left off. We will see after the furled fore course sail is up. Don’t want to “over sail” it either.

    Charlie,
I am in the middle of putting sails on my Leopard right now.  I used silkspan  and paper combination on a 1:85 scale and the scale looks pretty good.  In hind sight I will probably use silkspan for the center ply the next time.  The paper makes them a bit "stiff".  I put some pics in my build log on how I did it.  The method was actually an idea from a fellow member.

A small update with small progress. This veneer is somewhat brittle, does not edge bend well and does not take curved cuts, straight line cuts work better. It's also difficult to sand without breaking, so progress is slooow.

    Hi Jack
I cut the gun ports before the final planking.  I then brought the planking up to the edges of the gun port linings. I then framed each gun port on top of the planking.

Nice job Jack.  I remember when I did mine it was a real nightmare to get everything bent and fit.

I know it's a bit unusual, but I use real linen yarn and make my ropes on a specially designed machine. I dye my ropes exactly the way it was done back then, with real Stockholm tar.
The following photos are just an example of how well this works and how real it looks.

toms10 reacted to popeye2sea in Slablin, Buntline, Reef points and Gasket coil definitions
Bunt lines run down the forward side of the sail and are hitched to cringles on the foot of the sail. They are employed when furling the sail to gather up the foot.
Slab lines run under the sail forming a large u-shape from blocks at the yard under the sail and back up to the yard where they are hitched. They are not always fitted on ships as there function largely parallels the bunt lines. They are used to haul up large "slabs" of the sail for varying purposes.

Reef points are stuck through grommets directly on the sail along the reef lines. When the sail is gathered up to that reef line using the reef tackles during the shortening of sail the reef points are knotted over the yard or jack stay effectively turning that reef line into the new head of the sail.

Gaskets are employed after the sail is furled. There are several spaced out and fastened to the yard. When in use they are wrapped in a spiral fashion around the sail and yard. They are what holds the furled sail tightly on the yard. When not in use they are hung in a gasket coil on the fore side of the yard.
