    Mark mentioned in his Bellona post that he had had some difficulties aligning the strips of gratings during assembly using the traditional technique. I've attached a few photos of a simple jig I made to keep the grating ledges in alignment while gluing up the gratings.

    The jig consists of a square of wood with slotted recesses for the ledges.  On two sides stops were added.

    The gratings ledges are placed in the slots.

    The battens are now glued in place. I use dilute white glue as they are a press fit.

    The assembled gratings are removed. The round up has yet to be added.

    Next thing is mentioned neither in any book: The cutting is just one thing - the gluing is the bigger problem ...

    ... used some soft adhesive tape and tried to put it together with 0,5 x 0,5 mm toothless bars - looks nicely uneven ...

    ... so printed a 0.7 grid onto paper and used transparent double sided tape and a loupe to fix them together. Nice meditational work :-)

    So it is filling up:

    The caliper is set to 1.4 mm.

    And my little worker was so kind to lift one up to show the underneath :-)

    ... and the result is a cute 0.7 mm grating and soon I will be able to show where it will end up :-)

    My litte helper was so kind to lift on grating up to show the underneath:

    As promised, here is where the new gratings end up :-)

    Even the split into four parts can be seen :-)

    All the best, Daniel

    To better illustrate what I'm talking about for those like myself still learning, here is a picture with diagrams. To my understanding rift sawn is most stable as cutting radially produces the best integrity within the grain structure of the wood. I find the 2 methods of quarter sawing illustrated interesting as one takes 1 center slice verse 2. To my understanding rift sawn lumber is rarely produced due to its large amount of waste.

    Hello,
    today I'll show some pictures of the figurehead of the la creole.
    I used wood as boxwood. This timber is ideal for this.
    The images explains the attempt to carve the female figure.
    Here is the result.
    The figure is not yet finished. To be continued ...

    Hello All!

    Small progress has been done during this week. Lots of party days, Saint Joseph, Saint Patrick and now the Easter ahead. To much kids arround and too less time to enjoy the hobby.

    Anyway, I´ve completed the apron. First I cut the pieces as always from 8mm thick cherry timber. I´m using only cherry for the frames, keel, stern and stem. I´ll use some more wood but from time to time.

    Here is the order I followed gluing the different pieces. I have used again a glass surface to ensure the flatness of the pieces.

    Here is the result. I´m nut ungluing the paper patterns by the moment. In the other side I will use tracing paper again as I did cutting the steps on the stern. (See post # 3)

    Here is all the set. I have to fair a lot the whole thing. I am quite scared about how to sand the bow and the damn rabbet. How I miss the "Stickies" posts that used to be in the old MSW 1.0 snif snif...

    Best wishes to all and Happy Easter!

    Daniel.

    Just a little more to post at this time. I have been cutting my lumber to size for the planking and such and have the beams cut to size.

    I made a little bending jig by gluing the frame drawing to a piece of wood and hammering finishing nails along the beam edge and then I soaked the beams in hot water for about an hour and mounted them in my bending jig. I will let them dry for a day or two before removing them from the jig. I think it will work just find. When that is done I will repeat the whole process for another set. Thanks to Snowmans idea.

    Hope I don't get any mold on the wood or I will have to do the old bleach trick on them.

    Well, back to work, still making planking..

    In the course of Montanes construction for production of details I used  available for me jig saw (table saw) - self-made "minifactory" for thin laths and an interline interval, FET PROXXON for thickness to 20 mm and MJ10200J Feida for thickness to 40 mm). I have come to a conclusion about necessity of construction jig saw, deprived, whenever possible, lacks of the listed units (the design features sometimes essentially complicating operation; time and the efforts spent for maintenance of accuracy of a cutting; the big noise etc.). In particular, at FET saw a disk – tightening the screw constantly so gets jammed the extremely unsuccessful knot of fastening that I already two times had to cut off its head, differently a disk was not to remove (the same lack marked also others modellers).
    Initial ideas of construction were:
    - The basic range of a cutting – wood in the thickness from 0,5 to 20 mm;
    - Accuracy of a cutting 0,1мм;
    - A cutting under various corners;
    - Table adjustment on height;
    - Reliable knot of fastening  a cutting disk and simplicity of its replacement;
    - The stock of capacity excluding (reducing) overheat of the engine at long work;
    - Noise reduction.
    As a result of viewing and the analysis of a considerable quantity of descriptions industrial and self-made jig saw at me the design shown on a photo  has turned out   http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/82-montanes-by-garward-occre/page-33.

    Hello all!

    Here´s where I am on right now. In order to lay all the frames I have so far, I need to do the keel. Here are the pieces marked with pencil.

    It has reminded me someway the work I did back in 2011 with the pillars and the joist in my house. It´s amazing how things changed working from 1:1 to 1:48.

    So heres a picture of my porcupine and half the treenails in. The toothpicks were stained with strong tea.
