  1. I do it the other way round: start with square, and first taper it. After tapering, round it. I found it easier to get hte right tapering while the piece of wood is still square. (but I didn't use a lathe or any other machinery.) Jan
  2. I only use it in 'extreme conditions': The railing on the top is a walnut-strip of 0.6 mm thich, and 2 mm wide, bending without ammonia tended to result in an unevenly curve. I soaked in it a 10pct ammonia solution for half an hour or so, and than I could almost make a knot in it without braking it. It did however, result in severe bleaching of the wood, and the structure of the wood deteriorated (after drying it was more brittle than before) Jan
  3. I don't know. Queens come and go (although, perhaps not in England. ) Jan
  4. some paddler on the Medway? one of the Queens perhaps? Jan
  5. PS Waverley and his friends Jan
  6. JB Weld: it's an epoxy glue: http://www.jbweld.com/product/j-b-weld/ (in case of confusion: try google ) Mamoli fabricates the thing with the gold shiny finish. The problem is more: how to get rid of it: The gold finish does not take all paints. Jan
  7. I've been looking at the ship quite a few days, and I;ve been through many white sruise ships. Can't stand it that I didn't find her. most famous cruise ship of her days, stunning white ship. Shouldn't be too difficult.... but......... Jan
  8. I know, but his yachts were names corsair, and corsair (even the largest) is smaller than this one. Jan
  9. are you kidding Jan
  10. Perhaps I'm looking on the wrong side of the globe....
  11. I think I'm close: corsair does look the right period and model, but she's too small. It's a yacht, we're looking for a yacht-like ship. Jan
  12. But I don't think it's Corsair IV.... Jan
  13. As soon as you start asking questions on "to redo or not to redo".. we all know what will happen. btw: did your woodworms miss one little hole? (in the upper left corner of the gunport) Jan
  14. Boskoop has also long gone. It's Velp that remained..... Jan
  15. I like those white hulled steam yachts. I'll be back later, after I've seen a few of them Jan Not Dephine, not Nahlin....
  16. The only pic showing up on my screen is SS Irish Oak, but that is only a look-alike of this one, as far as I can see. Jan
  17. Irish merchant ship during WWI. Almost there.... Jan
  18. I think Eamon has other fish to fry in stead of recovering. He has to find a new ship to show us here. The brig in my picture was indeed ZrMs Pollux, Dutch Navy Brig. No real history, so apart from one or two lines in some obscure Wiki-page and this pic there is little to find on her. Jan
  19. Sjors will be happy (as we all are). Wonderfull detail. It really changes the appearance of your sub into a 'real sub'. Jan
  20. But it explains your fluency in Dutch (btw School long gone) Jan
  21. No I used to work in Utrecht, and from work to home I just passed this ship every day (at least, in the winter months). ANd last year a member on MSW was working on a paper version of the ship, and asked for a couple of pics, mainly of the details of the ship (especially because the scrollwork as build differs from the scrollwork as drawn in the plans) So I took my canmera to my work, and made a couple pf shots. And as there was someone on deck, I asked for a small tour around the ship. Jan
  22. Come on guys! It's not that difficult. This pic is all over the (dutch shiplovers) internet. (I have to admit, I halved it to prevent easy recognition ) Jan
