Hi Christos, Using my building brain would it be a brace? Edit, Though a pair would be better -
Sounds good Pat i am be keen to see how you do it, I broke one of my metal castings. This would be a good way to get a replacement. I was trying to bend a cast one to fit the hull, (DOH) As you say it could be shaped to fit. Is the casting a bit flexible? Hooroo Chris

Hi pat very solid and neat looking steps and the ship as well. You are moving along very quick, there musn't be an admiral around to keep you occupied otherwise, or you are one of those lucky retired types. Cheers Chris

Howdy Vossie Definitely a great looking build, another one of those builds where I would swear that I was standing on the wharf looking down into a ship. Cheers Chris

I am bucking the trend on my Mermaid. I have decided to glue on the 4 x 2 walnut strips on top of the bulwarks. When i looked at the height of the bulwarks down to the deck trim timber there wasn't enough space to fit the gun ports in comfortably. Though, the walnut is the same thickness as the ply bulwark, going to be too hard to match it in with the planking so I will plank over it and then add a capping strip on top. That will leave a total bulwark height of about 950 mm which I don't think is too high (I hope). Planning on making the capping, stem, keel and, stern post and rudder using some Kauri that I have used on my endeavour, and use the supplied mahogany 2nd planking strips.

Hello rick
I wonder if you have a pic of the
carronades that you bought and what they look look on you boat.
The cannons supplied with my kit are too tall and just fit underneath the top of the bulwarks.
Thanks Chris
-
Hi Chris - I didn't get carronades as it was only after seeing that post about the fittings that I realised that's what should be fitted. I had the same problem with my cannon and actually rebuilt the carriages slightly lower. Sorry I can't be of more help.
There's a very short bit on carronades here https://www.arc.id.au/Cannon.html with a general description which may help you get the correct size barrels for the kit.
Rick

Good evening Pat You are certainly moving along quick with your ship, but it is looking very nice. Have you tried to use a contact clue, it needs to be brushable/roller type. cheers Chris

Whilst you are all here, just had a look at Jim's site. What are the best saw blades to buy? And what accessories are a must buy. Thanks Again Chris

Thanks to all, i was pretty sure that is how the replies were going to go. It is good to know that the Admiral doesn't get to see my card purchases! 😁

I am looking for a table saw that would be better than my Proxxon one What are Australian members doing to get a good one? Do the Byrne's model get shipped out here? Thanks chris

Howdy Rick Looking in here Page 12 http://acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/_transcript/2011/D13569/a4585.htm it says it had 2 carronades when bought and since that drawing shows one in the stern, then that is where mine will go. Hi James sorry for intruding into your log and discussing things. Thanks Chris

Hello James That's some very nice planking work so far. Have you got anymore done and what did you work out with the glues? I have been thinking about the gun ports and the stem, thought I might try and give the stem a proper look and i was thinking of something for the bulwark planking. Then I come in here and see what you have done and talked about with Rick. So sorry James its going to look like i am copying what you have done. Must have been where I got the ideas from. One question for you. Does anyone know if P P King actually had cannons with him, will help me decide about the gun ports? Thanks Chris

Hi James thanks for the drawings I think the transom in this drawing does show the side extension to the transom. There does seem to be a fair bit of variety, but i think I will stick to the conventional look but make it a bit rounder. https://antiqueprintmaproom.com/p-p-king-in-h-m-cutter-quot-mermaid-quot-meets-with-the-malay-fleet-april-1818

Howdy Martin Yes no more thin crap, as you say one mm or more. There is still a bit of contact glue to clean off, will do that first with abs glue cleaner, very carefully, then scrape. Going back to the transom the drawing here https://antiqueprintmaproom.com/p-p-king-in-h-m-cutter-quot-mermaid-quot-meets-with-the-malay-fleet-april-1818 seems to show the wider transom, assuming that is the Mermaid at the front. Hooroo Chris

Now for the deck layout and Transom Hey Rick are you about. Is that a stove sitting on the deck in this drawing you put up. Did it have one permanently? And it appears it had a different shape transom at some stage, would it have been altered before King took over? A couple of models i have found are showing it with a more rounded transom with extending out out at the sides wider than the boat. https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/scale-model-of-hm-cutter-mermaid/gAEIhta_S2f-jA?ms={"x"%3A0.5864775556678301%2C"y"%3A0.6110940615653034%2C"z"%3A10%2C"size"%3A{"width"%3A1.865686274509804%2C"height"%3A0.6941176470588235}} http://collections.anmm.gov.au/en/objects/163203/scale-model-of-hm-cutter-mermaid;jsessionid=C2AC6BE22CE1C14A5A225A2E91DFCA10 And i see that it was copper plated as well, don't know if i will do that. Cheers Chris

It has taken some time but the deck planking is finished. I really don't know if how i have planked it was necessary, but I wanted to have a go at doing a deck like this. The .4 mm thickness planks were a pain in the backside to use and after this ship i am not going to use this thickness again. i still needs a sand and clean and a sealer. Now to work out the layout of the deck fittings.

Hmmmmm, Hmmmmm and more HMMMMM, its a bit mind boggling, to me anyway. But I'm sure you will nut it out. Cheers Chris.

Good afternoon Pat and welcome aboard. I will follow along with interest i have one sitting on the shelf, waiting for me to get back to it. There are some fine builds at the moment being done. search the build logs to see what is being done. They are a very helpful group of ship builders. Cheers Chris

Hello Fernando The contact glue is a trade supplied brand, look for a brushable contact at the hardware store. I'm not sure what they have but try for the brushable type. The gel types might dilute. I also use a glue by Selleys called "interior quick set" pva which is good to use, from the hardware store. I will update my Mermaid log tonight to show what i have been doing with the contact glue. Cheers Chris

Hi James, if you put your plank in place while it is still a bit wet you can move it around into position, doesn't need much glue. Just keep an eye on it in case it moves. I use a very small art brush to apply glue. Use some leftover bits and practice on something else. When it is stuck it is done, push it flat and move on to the next. I sometimes do 2 or 4 in one go.
