  1. Mine is the Constructo kit that came out just a few years ago, so it looks like the same kit you are building. I hope mine looks as good as yours! Bill Morrison.
  2. The rigging of plas5ic versus wood ship kits is the same. only the material and complexity of the model is different, which might affect the methos used. Bill
  3. I remember back in the 1990s that a friend of mine converted the Heller 1/100 kit to her as-built configuration. I have to admit that that, to me, is when she was most attractive. You are doing a wonderful build. Well done! Bill Morrison
  4. Welcome, Dr.! Well done on your models. Bill Morrison
  5. To me, I wish that Heller had paid more attention to providing plank detail across the decks and on the inboard side of the bulwarks But, Bill has done a great job on them! I also love that you raised the waterline to the lowest wale. Lemineur's drawings illustrated this quite well. It goes a long way to giving the appearance of a more balanced design. Bill
  6. Wow! I am most impressed! You have inspired me to start mine . . . Bill Morrison
  7. Wow! You are doing beautifully! I strongly recommend that you get a book from Model Shipways called The Neophyte Ship Modelers Jackstay. It is an easy-to-follow general guide to solid hull ship modeling and is very inexpensive. Also, Model Shipways once produced several model kits of American clipper ship kits that are in a small scale. They can be found on sites like eBay. Keep up the great work!
  8. Wow! Now I wish that I had paid attention in Shop class way back in high school! Oh, well, life is an endless series of missed opportunities . . . Bill Morrison
  9. Norske Love (Norse Lion) is a great kit and beautiful model. You are starting well! I will gladly follow along. Bill Morrison
  10. Although I have not gone the outstanding route taken by Hubac's Historian with my SR, I sanded off the wood grain and waterline, raised the waterline to the lowest wale as depicted in Lemineur's excellent book, added Evergreen thickening to the gunports, opened the quarter galleries, changed the dimensions of masts and spars according to the tables in Mondfeld's book, added a galley stovepipe (again from Mondfeld's book), and scratch built a chicken coop (again per Mondfeld). I used an "aged white" for the lower hull I found in the "Railroad Colors" line by the now defunct Model Master. The raised waterline goes a long way towards correcting some of the dimensional problems, and the added Evergreen stock and deck details turned her into a reasonable model. Bill
  11. And that makes modeling great. And it reinforces my argument. Build to your interests. Don't build to mine. By the way, naval vessels are, in fact, working vessels. I served on seven of them. Ask my wife about how hard we worked. Bill
  12. My point is that simpler is not necessarily better. I never completed the schooner because it is boring to me. However, I did complete several ships-of-the-line, galleons, and frigates. Bill
  13. I remember back in the late 1980s that Model Expo ran a special to get people to build wooden ship models. Their deal was that they would buy back completed models of their Phantom kit if the builder bought from them. Mine is still sitting in the box as it is a boring kit for me. But, I have completed and sold models of HMS Bellona (Corel), USS Constitution (Blue Jacket), Half Moon (Blue Jacket), among others. It is up to you. Bill Morrison
  14. Years ago, a build model of HMS Victory was presented in a ship modeling magazine by a first-time builder This builder was a woman in her early 70s who visited HMS Victory and decided to do a wooden model of her. The model was spectacular! Additionally, Wolfram zu Mondfeld9author of Historic Ship Modeling) advises to pick a ship that interests you instead of getting smaller ships for which you have no interest. The point is that you decide. There is lots of help here. Bill
  15. It looks great!!!! I apologize for my last entry. I have been wrestling with severe health problems dealing with a broken hip and shattered knee, and I had neglected to read your entire build log. Your approach is showing that the effort to build a real model out of a plastic kit is phenomenal! I am most impressed! Bill
  16. Welcome aboard. I believe that we have each shared similar experiences with models. Good luck! Bill
  17. I retired from teaching three years ago. I have filled my time building more than a few models, including HMS Victory and CSS Alabama. I have also made progress on my SR. Bill
  18. Marc, I understand and empathize! I averaged a cross-country or overseas move with my family every thirteen months for twenty-four years while in the USN. Good neighborhoods are a joy in which to raise a family. I hope that you enjoy yours! Bill
  19. I am building HMS Victory, which is a very basic jut that I have heavily changed to a much better model. Bill
