Hi Kees Glad to see you here! She will float, but it will take some time until then. Next I will make are the ships boats, material is ordered for them (and the SMS Danzig`s boats too). Should arrive this week, then I can start again with "real" work. In the meantime I can plan the guns barrels in my 3D program for printing. Regards Gerhard

They are not too far from the Bob Hill drawings I`m working with. As I HOPE, the errors will not appear too much in the 1:50 scale model, but if they do, would be nice to give us some more infos about them. Where have you figured out the differencies between the Hill plans and the remaining parts of the CAIRO, and how should it look like? Regards Gerhard

Hi John If you mean the 21 pages from the Vicksburg NPS, here they are. That was one of the first files I had for the build, seems that the outer lines are close to the Bob Hill plans. Best regards Gerhard 150 Years Civil War.pdf

Hi Nenad I`M back too from admiral-forced break As I`ve read above you plan to play with a 3D Printer: Same idea friend, I`m planning to build a DIY printer, some parts arrived yet, still a lot more to come til I can start to build it up. Rhea has become a big one, friend! Regards Gerhard- 4,152 replies

Hi Johnhoward Thank you for that really new (to me) information. As there is a break in building my model of the Cairo, would be nice to keep us informed about newer results of research. I will build her as a floating model, most important will be if and what changes are to make on the outside of the ship, the inner structure will be more important to those who build the ship as a showcase model. Thank you four your hints to that differencies! Is there a linc to the Vicksburg 2015 drawings? Please post! Best regards Gerhard

Hi Bob Thank you, that`s what happens when admirals take over Breaks for the modelbuilders wishes, but as I hope, now it will be all set and done for her "majesty" and the next steps for the Danzig can be done. But; I`ll never know what comes next............ Regards Gerhard

Back again................... In the meantime there were so many other projects to make, that I had almost no time for my ship models But NOW it`s time to continue with something for the DANZIG! Next things to do will be the boats of the ship, the best I canb do with them, is to copy Archjofos method of building baots, as he showed in his simply perfect La Creole build report. Wood is ordered from http://www.massiv-holz-werkstatt.de/ should arrive next week. Then I can go on again with more stuff from that great prussian steamer! All the best Gerhard

Hi Bob Just fell over your little "sisters", nice and elegant boats! I`ll keep myself in............. Regards Gerhard

Hi Carl Thank you, but still a long way to go! The exhaust and carb manifold are just "for fun", they dont have any function. But the whole engine looks better with it. Whilst I`m waiting for my 3D printer, I will continue with the hull, the transforming of the files to printable format will be done in the evenings. Regards & thank you all for watching again! Hi & back again with more from the Cad - works The engine is drawn complete, next to do is to transform all the single parts into printable .stl files. I must save the complete Cad-file in the correct store place and then make for every part a new file. This is a lot of work to do, but for now here come the next photos. The engine with its measure, all measures in 1/10th mm The engine from the rear side The engine from the front side, under the round hood sit all the necessary contacts Best regards, thank you for watching! Hi Patrick Thank you, I know you will understand the journey soon, the destination is close to this one, but bigger Hi to all of you out there Today I could make the last drawings of so called important parts, including the circuit diagram for the V8. Some more "optical" parts still missing, the mean work is done! The switches for the cylinders, each switch is used for two coils as the numbers show The cylinders numbered; even for my own better understanding The circuit diagram The now almost completed motor with cylinder head covers Thank you for watching & your many likes Regards Gerhard

Here we go on.............. Next things to plan was the front end of the engine, with all the electrical steering parts. The power comes from a battery, goes though the sliders and drives the pistons by magnetism from the coils. As two coils are driven by one circiut, I need 4 switches. Two of them are set ni front of the other two, so there is no chance to get a short circuit when the engine is running. And the front lid is also drawn now, next will be the "cylinder" head covers, lengthen the crancshaft to correct length, and trying to draw all the wires I need. Regards Gerhard

Hi Mark Thank you!!! There is much more of drawing work to do, so many parts still missing for a working engine. Later the day i will post some new pics from that constructin drawings, when all is done I will have to change them all to .stl format to get the parts printed. Even this will take time, I`ll get finished with it when my 3D printer is in my store....... Regards Gerhard

Hi Bob The cases will be made from red or green ABS or some better material, the engine stays hidden under the lid. I hope it will have enough torque to drive the boat in good speed! Hello popeye It took a few minutes to saw all that stuff, and some hours to glue and dry it. Now that little machine works fine, after I had to make some improvements as the bar in the front. I have made some coils for another engine (Inline 8) they all look good and have the same reststance of around 22 Ohm. Best regards Gerhard

As I meant above, here are the first steps of drawing work for the engine. The housung is only 82mm long, short enough to fit into the narrow hull of the Bootlegger. Beneath the drawings I had to build a solenoid winding machine, I made a simple hand driven item, most important part of it is the counter. This is needed when more than one solenoid is to make, all MUST have the same number of windings! The Crankshaft with Rods and "Pistons" The same, now with solenoids The engine housing`s upper part with all former shown parts The winding machine Regards Gerhard

Hi friend Well, not cut to bones, but my knees were both hit really hard, so it took a long time for rehab. But riding bikes is what I`m addicted to, beneath model making. Hi Mark all of these engines I`ve seen are scratchbuilt, I will have to do my own one, in correct size to the original one. The housings will be 3D printed as I will have my printer next spring. I will construct the engine on the PC with 3D-Cad, transfer the files to .stl format and print them then. It`s a lot of planing work to do, I`ll keep you informed, of the next and ongoing steps. Regards Gerhard

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
