reklein reacted to RGL in RKR Varyag by RGL - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1/350 - PLASTIC - Slava-class cruiser
The life rafts and fire controllers added, the only railings to go plate on the sides. The SS-N-19’s are added, the numbers are very stark and will have a coat of matte varnish before weathering.
The final bits have been primed and will need a few days to get ready.

GIG completed....
Decided to complete the Gig first because it appeared to be the more difficult details.
I'll be moving to the Pinnace next....
Looks as if we're gonna be building launches for quite a while.

reklein reacted to xken in Maersk Detroit by xken - 1:354 scale - Container ship
I have been working back and forth between the bow and stern mooring decks working on the various items. Here is a picture of the stern mooring deck.
Here is a close up of the ladderway on the starboard side formed from one of Tom's PE sheets. Also note some yellow caution paint on some components which I added per photos.
One of the more challenging items was a raised platform between the anchor winches that has a meshed floor. My wife had some ribbon that came on a flower bouquet that I liberated from her. I sprayed a section with gray paint let it tack off and then pressed it between two steel blocks to set flat.
Next I cut a pattern of the platform floor and bent a .020" brass rod around the perimeter of the pattern and soldered the joint.
I then hammered the formed shape flat and then filed it smooth on both sides.
Next I bent three U shapes for the legs and hammered the center flat for a mating surface with the frame when soldered together. Once all were soldered in place the legs were all cut to the correct length needed. I then glued a formed ladderway to the edge of the frame and allowed the glue to really set hard.
I then sprayed the platform frame with gray paint and using a medium thick CA glued the frame to the painted ribbon. Once the glue set I carefully cut it out around the perimeter.
Next came the rails cut and fitted to the frame and then the painted with the ladderway rails and steps painted yellow.
Here is the platform in place along with the rest of the fixtures on the bow mooring deck with the various yellow caution highlights.
Now back to adding more details.

I finished up the ladderways and then added the mooring deck rails.
Next I made the mooring deck winches of which there are two styles, as well as left and rights based upon the electric motor location. Here they are set on the plans.
Here they are set on the deck with bits and mooring posts. White rope will be added before the winches are glued in place.
Next I moved on to the bow that has three winches the same as the mooring deck; in addition there are anchor winches and the pictures show "in progress" anchor winches in place on the bow fore deck.
The anchor chain will index into the hole with the brake arm over the roller and into the deck. Just a great deal of more details and fixtures to add yet.

I hope all had as great a holiday season as we did with all the kids here for Christmas. We had four generations under one roof; Gretchen's father, Gretchen, our daughter Heather and Eric with grand children Sophia and Daphne; Alex and Tyler. This picture was taken at Heather's house where we spent most of the time together.
Both Evan and Eric got to see their ships. Here is Evan holding his ship, still a work in progress.
Here is Eric and I standing next to his. He really loved the signal flags with the boys names on them.
I also spent a little time after Eric, Jamie and the boys returned to New York working on drawings for the LCVP for the Maritime Museum here in Morro Bay. At 1/12 scale it will be 36 inches long. Here is a PDF of one sheet of the plans I have so far. Once the drawings are done enough I will sort out a materials list to start the build.
LCVP PLAN.pdf
For now back to making the ladders and winches. HAPPY NEW YEAR to all!

reklein reacted to Paul Jarman in Ship paintings
Jim,
Cracking set of pictures. I like the fact they are watercolours. I like to see the simple parts of a picture that give it meaning. So i look for things like the portholes, masts and rigging that add to the detail and you have them down to a fine art. . The water details are very good.
The speed you paint at is unreal. Looking forward to seeing more.

Have you tried using Kicker ? Its a product that comes in a little spray bottle and when applied to the joint causes CA to set promptly. I do not usually spray it but use the pickup tube as an applicator to avoid overspray and waste. CA sets in the absence of oxygen so that what the Kicker does then quickly evaporates.

The winch on those boats look a lot like the Alaska gill netter boats used on the Northern rivers for salmon.

Well I completed the coppering and went on to some other stuff like the gunport lids, stern decoration and then got a start on the figurehead and head rails. I'm having a lot of fun.

reklein reacted to Angarfather in Statenjacht Utrecht by Angarfather - 1:36
Many thanks to you guys for all the "likes" and kind words.
Here are some pics of the current state of the model. The decoration figures are made of polymer clay. To make the figurehead was very fiddly. The lion of the full sized Utrecht in my eyes looks like a cartoon. But a very nice one. Iwasn't able to reproduce it in my model.
Lets have a look around the pavillon
Even the two water gods at the pavillion are rather strange guys than baroque gods. But,I did my very best.
Best regards
Hartmut

Coppering has begun. Hers my set up for embossing the copper. I just happened to have this handy tool on hand. Its a sensipress from NWSL. One could also use a small drill press. I feel it gives me better control than a hammer.

reklein reacted to johnhoward in USS ST LOUIS by thorn21g - 1:24 - POF - Civil War Ironclad - Gateway Model Shipcrafter's Guild
Attached are the most recent photos of our Shipcrafter Team's, "USS St Louis", City Class Ironclad model which primarily consist of a successful "dry-fit" of our partially completed brass paddlewheel with several of its thicker assembly jig boards still attached. When completed, it will include a "birdsnest" of thin rod cross-bracing between the four inner rings and all 17 "buckets". The actual paddle boards ("buckets") are inside of the larger paddlewheel ring (one is attached by its "U-bolts") as shown in the close-up photo. We are now working on framing for the skylight which covers the paddlewheel axle bellcrank and "pittman" arm attachment which penetrate the Hurricane deck. This demonstration allowed us to properly locate the two paddlewheel suppout ramps to achieve the correct paddlewheel axle location fore & aft while simultaneously achieving its proper vertical location which determined the depth of "bucket" penetration into the river water. Note that the paddlewheel is not in the center of its wheelhouse but further aft than center to achieve, in combination with the feed ramp, a smoother water flow to the wheel per "Pooks" original specifications. The starboard side of Hurricane deck houses have been roofed & sided, sliding windows are in place and the structural framing for the small attached sheds are also visible. Our brass models of the wheelbarrows for coal handling are based on late 1800's versions used for iron steamships. The 1:24 scale of this model allows us an exceptional amount of fine detail.

Attached are a few recent photographs of Bill's latest handiwork on our USS St. Louis Ironclad, [l to R: wheel for a coal wheelbarrow next to the previous wheels for the 12-pdr Boat Howitzer carriage, shovels & other tools in the fireroom, and the finished aft end of the boilers] Our modeling effort has been in a slight recess during August for vacations but should pick up again next month.
