lmagna reacted to Old Collingwood in HMS Greyhound by Old Collingwood - Corel
Good day folks, I found a bit of mojo so I decided to attack the boat yard, I decided to work on the hatch that needs covering next to the capstan first, my idea is to put two supports a mil (mm) ot two below the hatch frame, then when these two supports are set I will lay some boards across the supports.
While this was setting I decided to do another temporary cover in the shape of a gratting, this will cover the second hatchway from the bow, the idea here is during action the gun deck will need as much free space as possible, so the captain would order as many hatchways to be covered as possible, but to still keep some light and air getting to the lower deck, a gratting was used aswell as boards.
So I constructed a gratting and sanded it to fit, then droped this into place in the forward (second from bow) hatchway.
I also started work on one of the stair cases (very fiddly delicate work)
Here are a few pics folks.
Oh also sincere thanks to all who take the time to view my work, comment and hit the like button.
OC.

OC,
In battle, all the gratings would have been sent below. As for the steps and capstan, the steps would only need to be covered when using the capstan. i like the utility of what you're doing for that hatchway.

Here is work-in-progress. Despite appearances the tree nails in the second photo are vertical. The tape serves both as a guide and to stop the drill bit slipping.
Once the holes were drilled I filled them directly over the tape to avoid the filler spreading over the wood surface. Below is an experiment. It worked reasonably well, but provided the hull is coated with polyurethane before filling, it's probably not necessary. Photos of the result will have to await the return of the menagerie.

Why am I not surprised that your sails are as perfect as the rest of your model? Lovely work.

Thank you guys.
After a short break I started to sewing the sails. I managed to get a nice soft batiste with a slight beige touch, so I did not have to work with a dye. At this moment, I have sewn all the sails on which "only" is left to add different reinforcement and reef bands, add a bolt rope and fasten the reef points. And then, of course, bending the sails to the yards - that´s enough work.

Hey Mark coming along nice. I feel your pain about the glasses, sucks to get old my friend! A tip a guy told us at a workshop about eye strain is not to focus more than 15minutes whether at the computer screen or what have you. He said you need to look away and focus on something 5-10 feet away to give the eyes a break.

Inner gundeck planking is complete. Next step will be cutting the sweep ports. I have to first think about the best way to cut that tiny holes into the ship. Maybe I will prepare another stainless steel template. To be continued next weekend.

I have now done tree nails below the wale and above the waterline (photos later). Progress now will be delayed for about 10 days during the school holidays - those with small grand children will probably understand.

I think that this little house may have been the radio room or "Radio Shack." I agree though that it seems like the model has no door! Do your plans show one? Great work on rigging the antennas.

Hey Carl, thanks for the visit and suggestions - however, I don't understand what you mean. I purposely want the ship placed in a diagonal position in the diorama to get away from the standard center line method. This will also give me the space in the large areas for the missed Japanese shell spouts. The blue masking tape will obviously be removed and the tan colored filler pieces will be covered by the opaque polymer sea and not visible.
Please explain your suggestions, things can still be changed in the next day or so, If I feel it's warranted - no offense meant.
Thanks Wallace and Nils for your kind words.
Yes, Denis I agree with your comment about the deck but - - - If the "Java" had her deck painted a very dark grey, bordering on the black, during the war time period, which is also in accordance with the British camouflage method, who am I to argue? I want to show the model as close to how she was when my father served on her. If the "experts" tell us it was very dark grey, bordering on the black then that's what I need to do. Actually I preferred the teak deck but again, I must go with reality above my wants
The paint colors are the least of my concern though, I must now model the "sea" as a 16 mph wind would look. From the actual reports i read that was about the wind strength on February 27, 1942 with scattered cumulus clouds. A nice for sailing. Then how to depict shell splashes and firing guns and smoke out of the stacks. Everything will mean experimenting. Oh, I have some ideas but am open to suggestions, the more the better.
Cheers,

thank you Robert and Kevin......this model made me think quite a bit concerning the extra detail. I have always said that even Billing's beginner kits, has enough challenge, for experienced modelers {not that I hold that distinction} to me...any model kit that offers so many possibilities, is a good kit indeed. I still haven't taken any pictures yet, but I will.
I appreciate everyone who followed along, I'm glad you enjoyed watching the project. thanks for all the likes as well

lmagna reacted to Haze Gray in USS Maine by Haze Gray - 1/72 scale - RADIO - 3D printed
Hello all, I’d like to share a project I’ve been working on for the past month. I chose to start with the USS Maine in 1/72 scale but in truth I’m captivated by just about any pre-dreadnaught design especially some of the tumblehome hulls like the USS Brooklyn and the French Massena, Carnot, etc.
Most of the work accomplished thus far has been in the cad program (fusion 360) but I’m just about to start printing parts as I move through and complete the design.
I am including the torpedo boats that were meant for the Maine, and hope to eventually figure out a way to launch them while underway.

Well, it IS true...that GE was the only ones I had seen do it. That is what I said. But you taught me something I didn't know - that Shapeways can 3D print in gold or silver.

Are you talking about the two items I've circled in red? Zooming in, they appear to be engine telegraphs for communicating engine speeds with the engine room. The one on .the right is clearer,
