    Welcome aboard! I would agree with everything above and maybe add a variety pack of emery boards yes the ones your wife/girlfriend uses on her finger nails. And don't forget this forum is the best tool in your tool box use it often. Best Regards

    I managed a little progress over the last couple of evenings anyway. Once I completed the planking up to the top of the frames then it was time to cut the arc along the top of the gunwales. I have agonized over this step from the beginning. It just seemed to me that this could turn into an excellent opportunity for a major misstep. The instruction simply say draw and arc connecting the tops of the frames and cut it out. Easy right, not for me. I tried every pot lid in the kitchen and anything else that was round but found nothing the right radius. I finally came up with a plan though. After completing the inside planking up passed the gunwales I drilled some small holes through the planking at the top of each frame. then I inserted some stick pins in the holes. Using a thin piece of brass stock I clamped one end to the forward pin. Then pulled it up until it was in contact with all 4 pins and traced the arc onto the planks. I rough cut the inside planking leaving the line. Then built up the outer planking. Oh yes and in between waiting for glue to dry on the planks I did a little work on my capstan and got the gun ports cut out. Then I cut the gunwales down to their final shape. I will frame in the gun ports tonight and start the final sanding of the planking in prep for the second layer. Best regards

    Many thanks for all the likes. Even with my trip to the casino I managed to get a little bit done today. First of all one of the scuppers wound up partially below deck level. So I had to raise it up a little. I enlarged the slot upwards then scabbed in a very small piece of planking on the bottom of the slot. Like it never happened. Then I continued with the planking. Getting enough done to rough in the gun ports. For some reason the camera makes them look crooked but they really are straight as all get out. If I had it to do over again I would start with the inside planking first. Because of the taper of the tops of the ribs I have a good bit of fairing to do on the gun port frames. But that will have to wait till tomorrow. Best Regards

    Great job that will look wonderful when it is all sanded smooth and clear coated. Got a shipping update today mine should be here tomorrow.

    With the judicious use of shims and sanding boards I was able to get everything faired in. and in between sanding and waiting for the glue to dry on the shims I managed to get the upper ladder installed. and get started on the upper capstan. So after a few hours work I was right back to where I was when I got up this morning . Tomorrow is my day for playing poker while the Admiral is at the Renaissance Festival. Till next time.     I did not fair anything up to this point either and everything was nice and straight But those first few planks above the main deck began to get real curvy.

    Thanks for the kind words Justin. However.................... After three courses of planking I noticed a fairing issue that was not apparent until I got above the main deck level. So I thought I could try to fair the ribs from this point up or remove the planking and do it properly.. I went with the latter option. That is when disaster struck. OOUCH. I think it will be ok needless to say I am going to let this set up for a good bit before any fairing though. On the bright side... I did get the planking off in one piece and should be able to reuse it. This is what I get for jumping out of bed and diving right in. LOL

    Thanks for all the likes. I have not had any problems with the clip staying open. Are you sure you have the third handle fully inserted into the clip?

    Thanks for all the comments and the likes. And let the planking commence! I got home from work this evening and dove right in to the last of the sub planking. I also got two coats of wipe on poly on the ladder. I will let that dry real good over night and get it installed in the morning. That's it for tonight.

    It is coming along very nicely. Can't wait to get started on mine. My first build was the Midwest Sakonnet Day Sailer. That one was a lot of fun.

    I managed a little progress over the last couple of nights. I started by gluing in the upper mast Escutcheon ring. Then while waiting for the glue to dry on my hatch coaming I made a fairly passable main mast fife rail. The fife rail is only dry fitted for now. Then I turned my attention to the upper ladder. I used the same jig and steps as the lower one detailed in a previous post. I let it "cook" in the jig over night. As you can see I completed the hatch and coaming and dry fitted it. I did document the building of the ladder fairly well this time so I may post a thread in the deck furniture or tricks and tips section. This morning I popped it out of the jig. A little light sanding and a couple of coats of wipe on poly tonight. Then it looks like a good weekend to do some more planking.

    Well I just won an ebay auction for one of these for $19.50. I should have it by Feb. 12. Once it arrives I will be following right behind you. If you are not already done by then.

    I would use TiteBond I think it would be fine. I would love to find one of these kits. There is one on ebay but it is already started so I am going to have to keep looking.

    Wow that was quick Lol. Very nice job on the deck planking. Is that the pattern called for in the instructions or one of your own design? Either way I like it. Like I said I have the newer version of this kit waiting so I will be following along with interest.

    Very nice collection of Midwest builds you have there. I am following a couple on e-bay right now I hope I can snag them. I also have the newer King of the Mississippi waiting in the queue. I will be looking for your thread and following along.

    I made a little progress last night before heading out for Taco Tuesday. It is mostly just a repeat of the modification I made to the middle deck around the hatch opening, so I will not bore you with commentary . Tonight I will complete the hatch coaming and start working on the ladder.
