  1. It is from Hobby Zone. There is a link to it in my signature/builds line below. Not sure if it is still being imported or not. The particle board clamps a quite fragile but it works well enough. Regards
  2. This is really coming along very nicely. Very ingenious transport method I would never thought to sew it to the seat. Great Idea. Good luck in your new digs.
  3. Bob, Nice to see you found your way back. I think it must be the South Florida weather or something because I too have been in a real slump as far as modeling goes. Perhaps I can take some inspiration from you and get back to it. Best Regards Art
  4. Thanks for sharing that Doc. That was one of those "Now why didn't I think of that" moments. I will certainly use that from now on. Beats the heck out of trying to paint them on.
  5. Glad to see you back to work on this one Doc. Just curious about your method for the barrel bands. My shakey hands make a mess of them and yours are so nice and clean.
  6. Wonderful build. You must be very proud of your Daughter. I always wanted to build one of these when I was younger but never could locate a decent set of plans. That was before the internet though maybe now is the time to revisit it. Thanks for the inspiration.
  7. Welcome aboard David. Have you started a build log yet? That is the easiest way to get help and the best way to help others who might come behind you. By the way I pretty much started at 60 so it is really never too late. Best of luck to you
  8. I too have downloaded and saved it for my upcoming AL King of the Mississippi build. Thanks Kurt, Bruce and all. Opps! Sorry for the misplaced response I was at the bottom of page one and did not realize it. Best Regards
  9. Thank you all for the likes. Just getting started on some of the deck pieces. But before gluing them in I was wondering about waterways for this deck. The instructions do not call for any but I think they would have been there. What sort of profile would they have had? I have seen them as both concave and just simply beveled strips. Is one more correct than the other or would it have been a regional thing as I am finding with a lot of details? Would they be made of different wood than the rest of the deck planking? Thanks
  10. When I was building my battle station I found these pictures by fellow MSW member robdurant to be a great resource. Also Harold Hahn has some great resources out there for gun and carriage construction. Like Mark said a quick search should turn up a wealth of info. Best regards
  11. Just checking aboard Bob. Say hello to New Jersey for me. Where abouts are you headed if you do not mind my asking?
  12. I know by now you all are as tired of these gun ports as I am. But they are officially done except for the outer frames which will come after the final planking. I created a lot of extra work for myself by building up the interior bulkheads and I am not sure I would go through it again. but I think it definitely achieved the desired effect. Giving some depth to the gun ports rather than just being a framed hole through the outer skin. Now it is on to some guns and other furniture for the second deck. I have the powder kegs and their racks soaking in some stain right now. I also need to start fabricating and installing the hardware for the gun rigging. I have also been working on the making and placement of the bilge pump. The kit supplied one is metal and actually quite nice looking but I will be making one from wood. The instructions call for it to be mounted on the lower most deck in the hold. In doing some research and reading Prof. Oertlings thesis on the subject I am thinking of moving it up one deck and extending the tube down to the bilge as it would have been. Slightly off center line and forward of the mast. That's it for tonight. Best regards
  13. Well that didn't take very long. I hope we can take this as a sign that you are feeling better. Can't wait to see them Bob. Best Regards
  14. Got started on the port side tonight. I posted these in the "what have you received today thread" a while back but this is the first chance I have had to use my Incra Rulers. These things are the best! Very flexible and accurate as all get out. Makes layout on a curved surface like this so much easier.
  15. Not much to report. Work continues on the gun ports. Also doing a few odds and ends while waiting for the glue to dry. Like painting metal rings on casks. Did I mention I hate painting! Just wanted to let you know I am still at it. Best regards
  16. Welcome aboard Chris. A search such as Mark recommends will result in several different but equally good solutions to your question just pick one that works for you and jump in. Also start your own build log as soon as you open the box. That is the best way to get help from all the great model builders available on this forum. It will also help all those that come in behind you. Good luck with your retirement and all your future builds.
  17. Thanks for the kind words and all the likes. It is good to be back at it. I have still been active on the forum but for some reason after the holidays it just took a while to get started building again. Hopefully now that I have started I will get back into a regular rhythm. And yes just for the record "I hate paint". While I know it is part of the art form I see it as a necessary evil. To achieve historical accuracy it is without question necessary and a lot of people can do wonders with it. I have never been one of those and so choose to use it as sparingly as possible. Best Regards
  18. Well, after an extended layoff (over 2 months) I am back at it. Not much to report being the first night back but I did manage to layout and cut two gun ports. I have been agonizing over this for quite a while. Firstly, I did not want to cut into the planking I had worked so hard on. Secondly where to put them. Whether to follow the sheer line of the deck or just make them level fore and aft I went with following the sheer. Here you can see the framing and planking I am adding to the inside to give the ports some depth. The kit supplies white metal frames and lids which I will blacken and use. I will wrap the inside of the ports with darker wood rather than painting them. Hopefully the other side tomorrow night. It sure is great to be back to work. Best Regards
  19. Welcome aboard, You stumbled upon the right place. You will not find a more helpful, friendly and experienced bunch of modelers than this. As for your first kit eventually it will come down to what catches your eye and fits your pocketbook. I am not one of the experienced ones but after a couple of attempts at more complex models I found it better to keep it simple the first time out. Some of the old Midwest kits are available on e-bay every now and then that is what I started with. They are simple with great instructions and give you a chance to get your feet wet, but most importantly finish your first project without getting in over your head right off the bat. (JMHO) As for Maine I have a sister in law who lives in Presque Isle, beautiful country but way to cold for my old bones. Best Regards and good luck,
  20. Bob, I hope you are feeling better. Your mastery of the art certainly out shines any disappointment you may have in the kit. It has been a pleasure watching this one coming together and knowing what perseverance it must have taken makes it that much more special. I can't wait to see what is next. Thanks and Best Regards,
  21. I have a feeling we are just beginning to glimpse the madness. Keep up the great work Greg it is a pleasure watching your descent into insanity.
  22. I just ordered mine and should be getting them today along with 2 Incra rulers. Best Regards
