  1. Another quick update, I am waiting on some specialized tools and parts to help in finishing her. Will post images in a few days of progress, these are the specialized tweezers I am waiting on:

SE Stainless Steel 12" Tweezers Set (2 PC.) - TW2-403

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D4W522C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Have to have these as the shorter tweezers just aren't helping and difficult to use.  These longer ones will gives me more room and precise placement without fingers in the way. They are 12" in length.

Plus their a great addition to my modeling tools.

  2. Yep I  have them both. Plus a couple more for reference.

I'll have more images soon as tweezer work is still ongoing and slow. I'm wanting to show more completion on the model instead of a couple of rigged lines. I had worked on her yesterday for five hours and got two lines completed, Today I'll work on her and hopefully have the main mast completed for all the boom rigging; but I'm not going to rush as rigging between all the obstacles makes me feel like a brain surgeon.   Make a mistake and my ship gets destroyed, then back track to fix.

Thanks for stopping by and stay tuned.

  3. @shipphotographer.com, I have gotten my order for he VENETIAN SHIPS by Gilberto Penzo. I must say that the information presented in the book was well worth the money spent. I am wondering if I can post some of the images of plans from the book, but it seems the email address isn't working to ask for permission. Do you have a current email for him? If so please post.

He has 8 different plans for the 15th century carrack's, which actually have enough information on them to build scratch built models from. Not including all the other plans in the book.

If you can afford to pick this book up, you won't be disappointed.

  4. Would have thought that making them that small wouldn't have worked. Especially from wood, impressive creativity!!  :imNotWorthy: Wondering also what kit maker made the kit your working on?

That model I had shown on a earlier post went for way over my budget for a kit, with shipping about $550.00. Hopefully a MSW  member bought it and we'll see a build blog on it.

Your information you offered still might come in handy for someone else if a MSW member bought it. I appreciate the offer, I'll be looking in the future also, never know what comes across ebay.

Not at all. Each model is good in its own way. In addition, it is difficult to compete with the team. And you don't need to. ;)

Р.С. Together with the Alabama by the Kearsarge would look good. ;) ;)

Wow! she's just gorgeous!! Love the fine detail work which was done on her. Love the cannons also, along with all the quality fittings and sail work,

Can you tell me how large she is? Thirty six inch's long? Scale? It also seems that no cost was sparred in her construction, looks to completely custom made also.

@Dart thanks for posting them and if you have more please post them.

  6. Continuing research on the booms for the proper look I really like the booms sail shapes and mounting on the below image as I said before. So this is the example I will be using.

Does anyone here at MSW know of a model shown at MSW with boom sails installed? So far I haven't seen one and would like to see someones else's example on a built model. Thanks.

I'll have more images soon of completed rigging.

  7. Thanks for stopping by and having a look, a quick update on the rigging ties.

Here's a image of the tie downs, I just don't have enough space between the pegs to drape the rope coils over like it should be. So I did the next best thing and winged it. Not to shabby of a look.

I'll have more images in a few days as I move to the main mast rigging. Did some touch up painting also on her and will wait for it to dry before I tackle the next rigging set. I won't have all the proper rigging installed per Bluejackets prints but will have eighty percent of them installed.

  8. @Hubac's Historian, I am trying to keep her as clean as possible during the build, so far she has turned out fairly well. As I have also been going over the boom sail mounts it seems that they are going to be quite a challenge to get right with mounting and rigging. Also they will have to be inside the main and fore sails to look right. With adding the wind blown look it has to be as clean as possible with that tad look of age added.

Since this is my first try at sails scratch built, really appreciate the compliments. Confirms I'm on the right track with them, even if they aren't perfect. This has been a great learning curve also, thanks to all the help and suggestions from members she's just not my creation but MSW also.

  9. Afternoon gentlemen, been rigging away and at this scale we rigger's know it's a tad tedious. Here's a few update images on the Mizzen and main mast work, this is about ten hours so far and still not done. Slowly as I have said before, with so far only one mishap on the fore mast breaking a boom off while rigging. The boom mount is re-drilled and mounted back on the boom, waiting on a good dry for it, then I'll re-install after touch up paint dries.

This is a close up of the blocks, looks better than imaged though, very gentle slow work as not to break anything. Seems even if I look wrong at her she breaks.

I'll try to have some more images tomorrow, really appreciate all the likes!!  Help's with this one as one step forward and three steps back as before. But she's coming along.

Size of the rigging is a tad bigger than normal but still looks in scale. Tying them to the pins and deck is a experiment in terror with holding my breath.  ;)   I'm hopeful their finished by tonight. I'll try to get some closeups of the ties and post the images.

  10. An excellent reference for ship building information is: Historic Ship Models by Wolfram zu Mondfeld. You can pick up used copies for cheap on ebay or amazon. Just have to hunt for them on ebay. Has great explanations and images to explain all the different parts of ship building and is written for the layman. If you can get a copy, you'll be glad you did.

I had a bunch of questions for my build on the Alabama, this book helped in solving the problems and build styles. My used copy ran ten bucks with four bucks shipping so there's a way to get them without breaking the bank!
