Papa got a reaction from Mirabell61 in Marine Walk
Thanks. Thought it might have been a rope sling out to the bowsprit.

I love the detail on this model. Makes me want to try my hand at a plastic battleship!

Papa got a reaction from alde in Hobbyzone building slip for wooden ship models
A bit of detective work on line and a visit to Lowes confirms that the bolts are metric M5-0.8. The "0.8" is "pitch" and it converts to a tad under 32 threads per inch (31.75 in fact ) That's why it looked like a #10 32. The M5 part i think refers to 5mm diameter..
The jig is turning out to be very handy. I am trying to shape the bulkheads for planking,

Hi,
wasn't happy with the rope coils on the central balustrade, so I made it all over again using some kind of jig. I'more happy with the outcome as the rope coils describe the curve I was hoping for.
The rigging is almost done : so here's some over all shots.
Still the anchors and the 26ft pinnace or longboat to do + some extra rope coils

This building slip is really versatile, here I turned the Victory upside down to get at the stern. I do need to replace the bolts with thumb screws or knurled ends to speed up changing things

I have done two types of acrylic cases. One was all acrylic and I butt-joined the edges and used the recommended solvent cement. I was living in an apartment at the time and had minimal tools. It worked quite well but it was on the small side. For my Essex I built a wooden framework and used the acrylic as one would use glass--fitting onto slots. There is a photo of my case somewhere on this site. I think if you have a table saw and reasonable woodworking skills you should be able to make a case.

Finally lower part of the hull all covered with the second planking, but still needs more work, sanding, sealing, varnishing... The small gap between the planks has been purposely left so I will fill with a black filler. Probably now I will continue work on the upper gun deck and continue the upper part of the hull and wales later.
A few photos:

The SS-N-12 launchers. The kit provides a little bit of PE that sirlts at this he front which is supposed to be a platform. I used these and added some platforms and railings from the Ise spares. There are also exhaust railings on the side and some offcuts of brass thingys to make up some hinges which are fairly non existent

More decks now planked and installed. Main gun deck, bow deck, raised lower deck and rear deck. I decided to use a softer graphite pencil (#9) to simulate the caulking as a standard #2 was a bit light (note the difference between the main gun deck and the other decks at this level).
The bow deck was partially planked and then installed as it has to be bent to insert down the frames. Grating frames are left open for now. Still not sure if i want to use the etched brass. The next pic shows more beams in place to support the upper decks as well as the aft most frame #14 now installed with the bare upper stern deck. Beams 6B, &b are half frames with support columns. This is one piece in the kit and the support column was not that good.
Here is one from the kit and my replacement. The foot of the handmade column is longer than the kit as the beam sits in a square hole in the main deck. If the foot of the column was as short as the kits version, the round part of the columns would end at the deck. I made one that way before i realized that this would not be a good look
Here they are installed:
A ladder is installed from the main to the lower deck:
And finally, a few pics of the whipstaff assembly, capstan and rear gallery deck planking. The tiller arm is temporarily inserted to show how the whipstaff will connect to the rudder.
So far no more surprises. The gaps in the planking on the side galleries are to allow fitting of the side patterns. It will be important to get them correctly positioned as they determine the height of the gunports from the deck. I will show some pics with a few cannons in a future post. I also plan to fill the bow and stern with basswood that will allow for a better purchase of the hull planks. I also plan to install some lighting in the lower decks as all this work will be invisible one the upper decks are in place and the hull is planked. The kit comes with some PE brass lanterns and I hope to be able to put the light in them and run the wires through the frames and out near the keel. Here is a link to show the the kind of light i am taking about:

I will have to work out the lighting details before i progress much further with the build.

I finished the ship building jig and set up the Victory that I started several years ago, I need to get back to it to relieve the boredom of tying the ratlines on my Granado.
